William Kristol was a leading figure in the conservative movement. His father Irving Kristol was renowned as the godfather of neoconservatism. Bill was the editor of the Weekly Standard for many years. But because he is a principled conservative, he loathes what Trump is doing to our nation. He writes at The Bulwark, my favorite Never-Trump blog.
What’s happening is not normal, he writes:
If the Trump administration’s sudden assault on thousands of foreign students legally studying at Harvard seems unprecedented, it’s because it is. If the abrupt abrogation of temporary protected status for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans legally living and working in the United States seems unprecedented, it’s because it is. If the sudden arrests and deportations of law-abiding immigrants checking in as ordered at government offices seems unprecedented, it’s because it is. If the deportations of other immigrants without anything like due process and basically in defiance of court orders to prisons in third countries seems unprecedented, it’s because it is.
And if it all seems utterly stupid and terribly cruel and amazingly damaging to this country, it’s because it is.
But it turns out nativism is one hell of a drug. The Trump administration has ingested it in a big way, and it’s driving its dealers and users in the administration into a fanatical frenzy of destructive activity. And the Republican party and much of Conservatism Inc.—and too much of the country as a whole—is just watching it happen.
The United States has many problems. No one seriously thinks that Harvard’s certification to participate in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program is one of them. And the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement of the action against Harvard makes clear this isn’t just about Harvard: “Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the country.” Are our other institutions of higher education suffering from their ability to attract and enroll students from abroad, if they chose to do so? Are the rest of us?
No. And to the degree there are some discrete problems, nothing justifies this kind of action against Harvard. As Andrea Flores, a former DHS official, told the New York Times, “D.H.S. has never tried to reshape the student body of a university by revoking access to its vetting systems, and it is unique to target one institution over hundreds that it certifies every year.”
Similarly, what’s the justification for the Trump administration’s unprecedented sudden and early abrogation of temporary protected status for 350,000 Venezuelans who fled tyranny and are now living peacefully and working productively in this country? There is no broad unhappiness at their presence, no serious case that they are causing more harm than doing good. Nor for that matter is there a real argument that the presence of 20,000 Haitians living and working in Springfield, Ohio, is a problem that required first lies to denigrate them and now attempts to deport them.
And this week, the nominee to head U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said the Trump administration intends to end the well-established Optional Practical Training Program, which is the single largest channel for highly skilled immigrants to stay and work in the United States after finishing their education here. A study by a leading immigration scholar, Michael Clemens of George Mason University, finds that slashing that program would cause permanent losses to U.S. innovation, productivity, economic growth, and even job opportunities for native workers.
But here we are, with an administration where fantasy trumps reality, ideology trumps evidence, and demagoguery trumps decency. As the economist Dani Rodrik puts it, “Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.”
Foreigners studying and working here are not damaging the United States. A virulently nativist administration is what’s damaging the United States. It’s doing so in ways from which it will be difficult to recover. Just as important, it’s doing so in ways that will be a permanent stain on this nation’s history.

Well said.

While we can blame Trump for the demise of our country as we know it, we should consider that he may be the standard bearer of our decline, but he is fronting for billionaires, Wall St, Big Business, assorted brain washed lunatics, crypto fraudsters and private equity. Our extreme income inequality, lack of regulation and easy access to propaganda have contributed to the current reign of terror. Trump is the demagogue leading the destruction, but all these subdued wealthy groups are riding on his coattails.

Retired: Yes, however, there would be none of those things, even the implementation of Project 2025, DOGE, Vought, Kennedy, and the Bimbo Brigade., without Trump’s endorsement from the worst dregs of what it means to be human.
The end run of a rise to power of a person like Trump is that everyone fawns and uses him like he used everyone else; and when they get what they want, they’ll throw him under the bus just like he does everyone else.
Kudos for Kristol–never too late. CBK

This is just another example of how Fascist Trump, Project 2025, DODE, and others are doing to the total educational system of the United States — Pre-Kindergarten through higher education. Add in the takeover the Library of Congress, public libraries, current attempts to take over all of the news media, get rid of NPR and PBS, etc., etc. Absolutely no different than what happened in the 1920s and 30s in German. The German people were naive enough to roll over, close their eyes and ears, and let the same thing happened as is happening in the United States, which ended up total distraction of the Germany.
I don’t believe other countries will follow Trump’s example of what he is doing with Harvard and I suspect will do to many other universities and colleges in this country. At least I hope not. But, I won’t be surprised if they do. This is just another example of dumbing down the population of the United States and more isolation of the country from the rest of the world.
As a side note, people should look up and understand the REAL purpose of the Library of Congress. An understanding of why there is a Library of Congress will provide and understanding why our Fascist leader has taken it over.

The Library of Congress belongs to Congress, not the President. He should have no right to fire and replace the Librarian of Congress.

It should be obvious that Trump is trying to achieve precisely the things that are harmful to the American body politic and its place in the world. His motivation may be debatable, but his effect is to harm everything except the pocketbook of the billionaires.

James,
At the time, that was almost everyone in public life. The most shame attaches to President GW Bush. Colin Powell. Anyone who knew that there was no hard evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The war had wide bipartisan support. In hindsight we are all wiser.

George Tenet’s autobiography is superb on this topic. It details how the Shrub administration doctored, cooked fake intelligence. According to Tenet, the only WMDs found in Iraq were barrels of chemical weapons supplied to Hussein BY THE UNITED STATES when he was our creation. We promptly called in an air strike on that facility to destroy the evidence, Tenet says.

“and too much of the country as a whole—is just watching it happen.“
I’m watching it happen, too.
Still, does that mean I’m only watching, because I’m not. I’m doing what I can as a retired almost 80-year-old living on a limited income with some of it threatened like Social Security.
Mary Trump’s, the convicted rapist, fraud, and felon’s niece is also watching, but she isn’t doing nothing.
In this 1:48 minute video on YouTube from Mary Trump Media, she’s talking about what’s she’s going to be doing after today.
For some reason, the link from Mary Trump Media on YouTube won’t load. Where I. tried to load it shows a circle taht keeps spinning.
No worry, anyone can search YouTube to find Mary Trump Media and this video on their own, unless they only want to watch.
Adam Kinzinger is also watching but he is also not doing nothing. He’s on YouTube, too. I subscribed a few days ago.
There are a lot of people out there who are watching and doing something.
Most of what I’m doing almost every day is on Quora where I’ve posted more than 2,300 answers, many of them focusing on the convicted rapist, fraud, felon, January 6, 2021, traitor and]or his fascsit regime. Those answers have had almost 600,000 content views so far.
What are you doing while watching Trump’s kakistocracy at work dismantling OUR democracy.
I don’t’ think donating money is enough, if you can afford to donate.
I don’t think signing online petitions is going to achieve anything. That shouldn’t count as doing something.
Is there a list of what can be done by individuals besides joining protests, donating money, and signing petitions? If there is one, let me know.
If everyone did a little, that adds up.

Who will stop Trump and the people around him if they won’t stop themselves? If we ever get over this tornado of destruction and have some pieces to pick up, I don’t know if there will be any shred of freedom left–the kind of freedom we all of a certain age have experienced and probably taken for granted for so many years. There are things that most of that generation just would not do. CBK

YOU CAN’T TRUST TRUMP
The cruel, dishonest way Trump ambushed the President of South Africa in front of the world’s media at their White House meeting shows the world that YOU CAN’T TRUST TRUMP because Trump has demonstrated that he will smile and shake your hand at the same time he stabs you in the back.
IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD, THAT MEANS THAT THE UNITED STATES CAN’T BE TRUSTED in any trade deal, any military pledge…anything.
What a turnaround. Until Trump, the United States was the most trustworthy nation in the world. Now the United States can’t be trusted by anyone.
THAT WILL COST America its future economic and military security as the United States becomes isolated and unwelcome.
Trump has done this to America.
