Take that, DeSatanis!
USA Today conducted a poll and found that most Americans think it’s good to be “woke.”
Republican presidential hopefuls are vowing to wage a war on “woke,” but a new USA TODAY/Ipsos Poll finds a majority of Americans are inclined to see the word as a positive attribute, not a negative one.
Fifty-six percent of those surveyed say the term means “to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices.” That includes not only three-fourths of Democrats but also more than a third of Republicans.
Overall, 39% say instead that the word reflects what has become the GOP political definition, “to be overly politically correct and police others’ words.” That’s the view of 56% of Republicans.
So, do you want to be informed and aware?
Or do you prefer to be uninformed and asleep?
By the way, I got an email inviting me to attend a speech by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. That means he is running. He will talk about “the Florida Vision.” I assume that means banning books, vetting Black history, banning art, crushing academic freedom, silencing all dissent.
I prefer American values, the ones in our Constitution.
Me too!
I would not wish Ron DeSantis or the “Florida vision” on anyone. His vision is regressive, biased, divisive, controlling, anti-science, diversity, inclusion and women. He is a fascist. If New Yorkers support DeSantis, they haven’t been paying attention to what he says. He is always mocking and ridiculing the liberal notion of democracy in New York and California. New Yorkers should remember how this petty, vindictive man used poor migrants as pawns in a cheap. political stunt that dropped them off in Manhattan. Big business will love DeSantis, but regular New York families should steer clear of this toxic tyrant. Nothing in his agenda is helpful to regular working folks. He wants to eliminate Medicare and Social Security and abandon Ukraine, for example.
RT,
Our reader Paul Bonner says the media is selling DeSantis as a smarter version of Trump, meant to burnish his appeal. That is dangerous tripe. As you said, DeSantis is a fascist at heart and may be even worse than Trump, given his zeal for controlling everyone. I doubt that big business will flock to him, given his interference in Disney’s operations. Big business wants to be left alone or helped by politicians; it doesn’t want them meddling in their operations.
Thanks for this information, Diane. It’s good to know and not surprising, really. Meanwhile, here in Ohio, Republicans are considering a law to take us back to the bad old days when strikes by college teachers were banned. Our old law–before we got it changed in ’83 under the Celeste Administration–required public employers to fire striking teachers. It never worked. What would you do the day after you fired all the teachers?
It’s good to know that most folks want people to be “woke,” but that fact itself explains why the Grand Old Party keeps trying to sidestep or weaken democracy. In Ohio the GOP is working on a plan to require a 60% vote for statewide initiatives. They keep trying to destroy democracy, but we won’t let them. And with global warming and these early springs, there’s even less of a reason to consider moving to Florida.
Jack,
Florida is worse than Ohio.
Arsenic or cyanide? Six of one, half a dozen of the other. There really is little difference other than optics. DeWine and the Republican led state legislature is just as toxic as DeSantis and Tallahassee. Our carnival barkers like Jordan are at the congressional level. The quiet ones in the state are more toxic. Andrew Brenner is just as deadly to public education here, he just goes about it more quietly while coopting the suburban white public school districts.
Back in my day (I attended high school in the mid-1970s), we called this being “conscious.” We thought it was a good thing. I still do.
But not on Friday and Saturday nights.
lol. Those, in my day, were for Cosmic Consciousness.
GLAD TO BE WOKE!
Plan to remain WOKE for a long time.
We’ll find out if the US will turn into a tighter spiral and try to sell ANTI-WOKE all over this land, or suddenly realize that STUPIDITY is not
THE LATEST NEW & IMPROVED, Cool thing to celebrate.
Heard on the news that the overall US IQ has dropped.
How they research that, who knows.
Watching the REP PARTY, it may be based on Observational Data alone.
Time to churn up WOKE & save our country.
Be WOKE y’all!
Barely surviving in wokeless GA……

Thank you! Me, too! Proudly woke. Woke till the day I die.
It’s Good to be Woke
It’s good to be woke
Aware and awake
As MLK spoke
Our soul is at stake
“Unmindful”, “asleep”
Are naught to endure
Our children will reap
The outcome, for sure
I am ‘woke’ and proud of it!
Reblogged this on Filosofa's Word and commented:
Sometimes it seems that those of us with a social conscience, those of us who believe in equality and humanity, are reviled with the use of the new term ‘woke’ that is bandied about like something distasteful and disgusting. But guess what? The majority of people actually believe that ‘woke’, as used in the 21st century vernacular, is a good thing! Take a look at Diane Ravitch’s post …
Personally, I would, totally prefer, to be, completely, aware of the racism in the world, but, I can see why, the Republican Party, as well as its, worshippers, wouldn’t want that, because, if rverybody is “woke”, then, they will, totally, lose, all control, of those who used to, follow the party’s, bad ideals.
