In its issue of November 19, The New Yorker published a lengthy profile of my efforts to change national education policy: to halt the galloping privatization, the demonization of teachers and the misuse of testing to advance the two previously mentioned topics.

Let me begin by saying that I was immensely grateful that this distinguished and influential magazine gave attention to these important issues. As everyone who follows this blog knows, it is very rare to see a critique of the ruinous bipartisan policies in print or on television.

I was also thrilled that David Denby wrote the article. He is not a player in the debates and was able to approach the issues with a fresh and unbiased perspective. By now, everyone in education has chosen sides.

I had other reasons to be grateful that Denby was on the case. He is well educated and cares genuinely about education (in one of his books, he describes a year he spent as an adult auditing Columbia’s famous “great books” classes). In addition, he spent a lot of time immersing himself in the subject. In addition to reading widely and interviewing many people on all sides of the issues, he accompanied me to four events from mid-April in Atlantic City to the end of July in Detroit and interviewed at length.

I have enormous respect for him as a writer and a thinker. Also, I enjoyed the time I spent with him. He is funny, insightful, and smart. As he picked my brain about education, I tried to pick his about film and books.

And I am grateful to him for two surprising reasons. My conversations with him encouraged me to start this blog and to write a book during the summer.

However, there were two inaccuracies in the article that I feel compelled to correct because they go to the heart of my argument against the current wave of destructive policies.

Both NCLB and Race to the Top are based on the spurious claim that our public schools as a whole are failing. I argue that this narrative is false. The article refers to my criticism of this “exaggerated negative critique” but then cites statistics that are wrong.

According to the article, I allegedly said that “high school graduation rates are higher than ever” at 75.5%. That’s the four-year graduation rate, the number that Arne Duncan and Bill Gates use to claim that rates are flat and we have made no progress in 30 years.

But that is not the number I use. The graduation rate for people ages 18-24 is 90%. That includes August graduates, as well as those who earned their diploma in five or six years or got a GED.

So let me say that again: the high school graduation rate for people ages 18-24 is 90%, the highest in our history.

The same paragraph says, “She mentioned a slight increase, among all ethnic groups, in reading and math scores on national tests.” This was an especially galling inaccuracy, because the fact checker asked me about it and I said it was wrong. I sent the NAEP data and a copy of my AFT speech in Detroit to the fact checker to demonstrate what I did say: test scores are not slightly increased. They are at their highest point in history for all ethnic groups. The scores of black and Hispanic students have increased in reading steadily and significantly over the past 20 years. The scores of black and Hispanic students in mathematics have increased dramatically over the past 20 years.

Yet despite my protest that I did not say “slight increase,” and my documentation with both the NAEP data and my speech, the erroneous statement was left in the article.

One may argue that my interpretation is wrong, but one cannot argue that these statements can be attributed to me.

The New Yorker decided not to print my correction, which is why I am writing it here.

One of the bloggers I admire most is G.F. Brandenburg. Compared to me, he is a veteran blogger. He has been chronicling the foibles of “reform” since 2009. His blog revealed that Michelle Rhee’s claims of having been a miracle teacher were bogus. He has followed her career since she left D.C.; do a search on his site and you will discover an interesting number of blogs about inflated claims in D.C.

I don’t know Brandenburg but I do know he is a retired math teacher, which means he insists on evidence. Assertions and spin and bold promises don’t make it past his rigorous scrutiny. He demands honesty and transparency.

So I am happy to say that this morning, he advised his readers to follow this blog. That means I passed his test. That’s harder than the SAT or the ACT or PISA.

I live in New York City, which is now on almost complete lockdown waiting for the hurricane to arrive.

All traffic has come to a halt. The only people on the street are those walking their dogs.

The mayor and governor halted all mass transit Sunday night at 7 pm. Most stores and restaurants closed by 5 or 6 pm to allow their employees time to get home. Most people don’t work near their place of residence. Last night, supermarkets had been swept clean of water, milk and all essentials. There won’t be any more deliveries until mass transit is restored. Most restaurants and stores will remain closed because their employees can’t get to work.

The storm was predicted to arrive by 4:30 am. When I woke just before 6, it was not yet here. No wind, no rain. By 7, there was some of both.

We were told there would be no garbage pickup all week and advised not to put our garbage bins out. So I dutifully taped the garbage cans shut, so the lids and cans would not blow away. But much to my surprise, the city trucks began collecting and I had to hurry out into the rain to untape the cans and put them onto the street.

Will the newscasters be proven right? Is this the storm of the century? Will it be the worst in our lifetime? That is what they are saying. They say that often. They should say it sparingly. Remember “the boy who cried wolf”?

We shall see. We are prepared for the next few days. Like one of the three little pigs, I am glad to be living in a brick house, in my case, a brick house that is attached on two sides to other brick houses.

 

As faithful readers of this blog know, this week has been a busy one for me.

It started last Sunday night when I arrived in Chicago after a six-hour flight delay caused by possible tornados near Chicago.

On Monday, I began the day speaking at the Chicago City Club, where I was introduced by Governor Pat Quinn. I then went to the headquarters of the Chicago Teachers Union, where I had a long talk with the amazing and dynamic Karen Lewis. The most memorable line of our talk was this one. I told her that national commentators scoffed at CTU’s insistence that schools need air-conditioning. Karen said she heard that, and she proposed that the air-conditioning at the Board’s headquarters be shut down to demonstrate that it doesn’t matter. And the Mayor’s offices too! Vintage Karen!

I flew to Columbus that afternoon, where I was met by the tireless Bill Phillis. Bill formerly served as a deputy in the Ohio Department of Education and has contacts in every district; he is passionate about equitable funding and public education. When I spoke to the Cleveland City Club earlier in the year, i told him that if he organized a group to fight for public education, I would come back. He did and I did. He brought together 400 people from across the state to plan their strategy on behalf of public education. The counter-revolution against privatization and greed now begins in Ohio.

I then headed for Lansing, Michigan, where I was hosted by the Tri-County Alliance of school superintendents, who represent 86 districts and nearly half the students in the state. I met a room full of dedicated public servants who are outraged and baffled by the persistent effort to destroy public education in Michigan. The reactionary elements in the state come up with one scheme after another to try to destroy any community attachment to public schools and to turn education in the state into a free market of choices. I was stunned to learn that every district spends about $100,000 on advertising to poach students from other districts, to bolster their budget. the superintendents know it is wrong but this is the system that the legislature has imposed on them in an effort to create “schools of choice.” The pressure for an education marketplace has been going on for a decade or more and is now accelerating, with bills proposed to eliminate district lines and to allow “selective enrollments,” in which schools could choose to accept only one race or one gender or only high-performing students. The raid on public funding by for-profit charters is nonstop, as are the attacks on public schools and those who work in them.

Last stop was Minnesota, where I thought I would have a quiet dinner alone, but to my surprise and delight, was contacted by Finnish educator Pasi Sahlberg, who happened to be in town for another event. So we met with other educators over a pleasant Japanese dinner.

Today, I addressed Education Minnesota, which represents the teachers of Minnesota. The state and its educators are fortunate in having Governor Mark Dayton, who prevents some of the usual efforts to attack teachers and public schools. Minnesota has its challenges but it is very fortunate compared to Ohio and Michigan, where the ALEC forces are in charge.

So I am in the Minneapolis airport now, waiting to go home. What a week.

I was able to blog and tweet while I traveled, and if you noticed more typos than usual, blame it on my iPad.

The letter-writing campaign came to a conclusion. In only two weeks, nearly 400 educators, parents, students and others wrote eloquent letters to President Obama. Thanks to Anthony Cody for coordinating the campaign and doing the heavy lifting of collating and assembling what amounts to a book. It is worth pointing out that every letter we received was included and not one of them expressed satisfaction with the current direction of federal education policy.

My week is done, but our struggle for better education has just begun.

There was a live and very enthusiastic audience, which made it a lively setting. Just what you would expect in Texas.

Same day, I speak to the CREATE assessment conference at University of Illinois at 11:30 a.m.

Same day, I speak to members of CTU at 4 pm, not yet sure of location.

Fly to Columbus, Ohio, that night.

On October 16 at 9:00 am I speak to the Coalition for Equity & Adequacy of School Funding, Bridgewater Banquet Facility in Powell, Ohio.

I leave immediately after I speak and fly to Lansing, Michigan. On October 17, I speak to the Tri-County Alliance for Public Education, 8:30am.

Then I leave and fly to St. Paul, where I speak on October 18 to the annual conference of Education Minnesota at 11:30 am.

I dash to make a flight home.

I wrote a post earlier this summer saying that I planned to spend the summer writing a new book. Here is my progress report.

My goal was to finish the book by Labor Day. That would be a personal best for me (I started in mid-June).

I didn’t meet my goal. I have written about 100,000 words but I have two more chapters to go.

The blog most definitely used up a lot of time that I should have been devoting to the book. But I have enjoyed the blog so much that I thought it was worthwhile. I also have met many wonderful new friends via the blog.

I expect to have a completed manuscript by the end of this month, despite a heavy travel schedule.

If all goes well, I should have a published book before the summer.

This was the first year of the Bammy awards, an effort to acknowledge educators who have achieved distinction in many different sectors of education. The Bammies are supposed to be the new equivalent of the Oscars for educators, presented by the Academy of Educational Arts and Sciences.

Emmy award-winning producer, broadcaster and journalist Errol St. Clair Smith organized this event, with red carpet, black tie and a sense of grandeur.

I was one of three who received awards for lifetime achievement. The others were Linda Darling-Hammond and John Merrow.

Many other Bammy awards were given to outstanding educators, and if you check the website you will see them (Linda received two!).

Randi Weingarten presented the award to me, and I must say she was at her best. I thought you might want to see this.

I just concluded an amazing visit to Austin.

I love going back to Texas. It’s my native state. I am a graduate of the Houston public schools. I like the sounds of Texas voices. I like the twang, the earthiness. These are the accents I grew up with.

I like meeting with racially integrated groups. I attended segregated schools in Houston. I’m proud that public education led the way in creating a racially diverse society, a society where people of all colors interact as equals.

I like the friendliness and openness, the lack of pretense and stuffiness that characterizes Texans. I have lived most of my life in New York City, but my heart belongs to this crazy state.

I arrived on Saturday and was met by Sara Stevenson, the tireless librarian at O’Henry Middle School, who has written many opinion pieces and letters to the editor in support of public education. Sara brought me to my hotel, where I met Karen Miller, a vigorous parent leader from Cypress-Fairbanks, who frequently sends me links to important news articles about corporate raiders of public education. It’s people like Sara and Karen who are the front-line combat troops defending our public schools, and they do it out of a fierce devotion to the common good, a sentiment that corporate reformers don’t understand. People like Sara and Karen are our secret weapons.

After an hour of rest (tweeting and blogging), I met two of the “fighting professors” of the University of Texas, Angela Valenzuela and Carolyn Heinrich. These scholars have been warning about the inequity of high-stakes testing for years, and their careful work will eventually turn the tide against the high-stakes mania. (By coincidence–or not–Sandy Kress, the architect of NCLB and now a lobbyist for Pearson, had an opinion piece in the local newspaper extolling the success of NCLB. He and Margaret Spellings may be the last two living defenders of that failed law.)

Saturday night, I had dinner with about forty superintendents from across the state who told me how frustrated they are with high stakes testing, how much time is wasted every year. A group of them have been working for several years on what they call their “visioning project.” Working with Phil Schlechty, they’ve been trying to dream up the kind of education they want for the children in their districts.

Last year, the Legislature passed a law allowing 20 districts to opt out of the state accountability system, which gets more onerous every year. The legislators just keep piling on more and more tests. The superintendents plan to use their autonomy to reinvent accountability and reduce the burden of testing.

Phil Schlechty gave a passionate five-minute talk about how our idea of democracy depends on the connection between the community and its public schools. He warned that if we lose public education, our democracy will be at risk. Phil also talked about his grandson, who made a video for school on “the value of doing nothing. The value of lying on your back and looking at clouds. The value of watching a caterpillar crawl on a branch. The value of counting the leaves on a tree.” Beautiful.

On Sunday morning, I spoke to a general session of the annual convention of the Texas School Boards Association and the Texas Association of School Administrators. More than 800 school boards have passed resolutions against high-stakes testing. I encouraged them to stand strong and to carry their righteous protest to the next level.

I asked, What if an entire district said to the state, we are not giving the tests this year? If the whole district says no, they can’t stop you. What if many districts opt out? If everyone does it, they can’t punish you. They-the legislators and other officials–will have to pay attention. They will have to stop and think of better ways to monitor the progress of education.

There is power in saying “no.” The more people say it, the more powerful it is. Texans have a long history of independence. Texans don’t like to be bullied. I would love to see a bunch of districts try it.

Sunday afternoon, I spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of parents and teachers at Eastside Memorial High School. The district has already promised to give the high school to a charter chain, and the community is furious. They didn’t ask for a charter, and they don’t want to lose their school. They are angry about the way the Broad-trained superintendent of the Austin Independent School District insisted on giving their local elementary school to the same charter chain, over the loud objection of the parents and local community. AISD was not responding to local demand (most of the local students abandoned the school when the charter opened last month). The locals are still angry, and they intend to hold onto the high school if they can.

Austin has several activist groups that are working to stop the encroachment of privately managed charters into the district. They are mobilized to elect school board members in November who will support community sentiment in favor of public schools.

Sunday night I went for Texas barbecue with local parent leaders.

Monday morning, I met with legislative staff to discuss the big issues in Texas. One is funding: the state cut $5.4 billion from the schools in the past two years. Another is the growth of online for-profit charter schools, which take public dollars with minimal accountability and poor results.

I ended my visit with an interview by Evan Smith before a live audience, on his PBS show “Overheard.” Wonderful audience, great questions, a good opportunity to address issues that are important to Texas and the nation.

I had a wonderful time in Austin, experienced a whirlwind of activity, and enjoyed the chance to meet so many people who care about children and our future.
