Jamelle Bouie, one of the most insightful columnists for The New York Times, observes that Trump has no interest in governing. He is interested in ruling. He thinks he has a mandate, even though he did not win 50% of the popular vote. He thinks his will is as powerful as law. He does not share power with Congress, and he’s testing how far he can go to diminish the courts.
Bouie reflects on Trump’s indifference to the other branches of Govenment in this newsletter:
I think it’s obvious that neither President Trump nor his coterie of agents and apparatchiks has any practical interest in governing the nation. It’s one reason (among many) they are so eager to destroy the federal bureaucracy; in their minds, you don’t have to worry about something, like monitoring the nation’s dairy supply for disease and infection, if the capacity for doing so no longer exists.
But there is another, less obvious way in which this observation is true. American governance is a collaborative venture. At minimum, to successfully govern the United States, a president must work with Congress, heed the courts and respect the authority of the states, whose Constitutions are also imbued with the sovereignty of the people. And in this arrangement, the president can’t claim rank. He’s not the boss of Congress or the courts or the states; he’s an equal.
The president is also not the boss of the American people. He cannot order them to embrace his priorities, nor is he supposed to punish them for disagreement with him. His powers are largely rhetorical, and even the most skilled presidents cannot shape an unwilling public.
Trump rejects all of this. He rejects the equal status of Congress and the courts. He rejects the authority of the states. He does not see himself as a representative working with others to lead the nation; he sees himself as a boss, whose will ought to be law. And in turn, he sees the American people as employees, each of us obligated to obey his commands.
Trump is not interested in governing a republic of equal citizens. To the extent that he’s even dimly aware of the traditions of American democracy, he holds them in contempt. What Trump wants is to lord over a country whose people have no choice but to show fealty and pledge allegiance not to the nation but to him.
What was it Trump said about Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, during his first term in office? “Hey, he’s the head of a country. And I mean he is the strong head. Don’t let anyone think anything different,” Trump said in 2018. “He speaks, and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.”
He wants his people to do the same.

It is a sobering thought for those that believed that our system of checks and balances would keep Trump within the bounds of democracy. Trump is corrupt and only intends to dictate so checks and balances no longer apply to him. The GOP is whipped and submissive, and most of the Democrats are asleep. He is firing or jailing anyone in the DOJ that stands up to him. Trump is ruthless, cruel, and morally compromised, and his biggest supporter is the richest fascist in the world, a man with vast resources. Do we really think we can count on having a free and fair election in 2028?

It is obvious that people who are in the Trump camp or worse (Yarvin, Theil, etc) think that democracy is either out of date or was never a good idea. They view all representation in government as flawed. The need for decisive action pushes aside justice, morality, or empathy. In their imagination, they are the great saviors of civilization, carved from the monuments of time, appearing just when the world is about to destroy civilization. Their problem, of course, is that their understanding of the past is clouded by their ignorance of themselves.
Tyrants have forever viewed themselves through rose-colored glasses. The polish they see is simply fresh manure shining in the light. Soon they smell. The problem is that they command a lot of power before their stench reaches the nose of a sleeping public. So their fall, once they are powerfull

Roy and all: I think they want democracy, but not if it means that black people, women, and other people they don’t like, can participate. Makes perfect sense when you think of it that way. They also call themselves Christians on basically the same principle. And BTW, Ukraine is responsible for the war with Russia because they exist. You just need to know how to figure it all out. CBK

Yes, naughty of Ukraine to force Russia to invade.

is very violent. Jefferson and the founding fathers (an enlightenment rock group) wanted to make regime change a group of really small revolutions. Thus the vote.
Can we escape calamity?

Outrage of the day, 04.28.25:
From Time magazine. Material in italics and within brackets mine.
On the eve of Canadians gearing up to vote in a federal election, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed President [and King of the United States in his own twisted little mind] Donald Trump’s previous comments about making Canada the “51st state.”
During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, April 27, host Kristen Welker questioned Rubio on whether or not the State Department has “taken any steps to carry out” Trump’s [insane] plans “as he has said, to annex Canada.”
“What the President said, and he has said this repeatedly, is he was told by the previous Prime Minister [Justin Trudeau] that Canada could not survive without unfair trade with the United States [not what Trudeau said, ofc.], at which point [Trump] asked, ‘Well, if you can’t survive as a nation without treating us unfairly in trade, then you should become a state,’” [Little Marco] Rubio said.
You can’t make this shit up. These people are simply insane.

I used to think that Trump’s relatively sane picks for his cabinet were Rubio and Bessent.
Rubio has destroyed his reputation.
Waiting to see if Bessent figures out how to rein in Trump’ nutty ideas about tariffs.

Below is what a Trump lover emailed to me. Obviously the ‘news’ that she reads are all far R rubbish.
I sent back to her a graphic from Fox showing that at 100 days, Trump’s ratings were only 44%. Each of our other former presidents had higher ratings. Trump on reign one was at 45%. [Obama was at 62%.] Even Fox can’t hide that Trump’s ratings are falling.
I reminded her that even God-fearing Christians voted to put Hitler in power.
“You are so solidly Democrat that if they told you to do something ridiculous, even evil, you might do it.
I am a child of God and for that reason, I pray that God will open your eyes so you can really distinguish when you are being lied to by the mainstream media.”

No “child of God” should have anything to do with the immoral, greedy grifter, Donald Trump.” Trump is not serving them to build a better country. He is only serving himself and using them for his own purposes.

I like Gov. Pritzker because he isn’t afraid to stand up to Trump.

I find it interesting to read what publications from other countries think of Trump. This article comes from the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.
Trump opened Pandora’s box on ‘Liberation Day’. Can it ever be closed again?
Nearly 100 days in, Donald Trump’s second term as US president has been defined by his determination to upend the established order on nearly all fronts of domestic and foreign policy. In the fifth part ofthis series, we look at the chaotic landscape in global trade after Trump’s shock increase – and temporary reduction – of tariffs for almost every US trading partner.
Those with a vested interest in global trade – that is to say, almost everyone – are likely treating themselves for whiplash after attempting to follow the wild swings of US President Donald Trump and his administration over the past month.
Following multiple rounds of tariff increases for Chinese goods after beginning his second term in January – an action most expected based on Trump’s first term and his hawkish campaign rhetoric – the president upped the ante on April 2, rolling out an unprecedented package of tariff increases for US rivals as well as allies…

It’s harrowing to hear Trump say–again and again–that now the world respects us. Under Biden, he says. We were a laughing stock. It’s just the reverse. We are now a laughing stock, with an insane, deranged president.
