Trump has said repeatedly that “many people” have urged him to run for a third term. Who does he talk to other than sycophants?
He made clear in a recent interview that his people are looking for ways to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, which says “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice…” Could that be any clearer?
One of Trump’s first executive orders attempts to eliminate birthright citizenship, which is explicitly guaranteed in the first sentence of the 14th Amendment, so it’s obvious that Trump has no respect for the Constitution despite having taken an oath to support and defend it. I would say that his failure to put his hand on the Bible explains his indifference to the Constitution but he is also indifferent to the Bible (unless he is selling it).
Of course, Trump wants a third term! What a great job he has! He can punish, insult, even prosecute his enemies. He can force powerful law firms to cower before him, he can threaten universities unless they abolish courses that he doesn’t like, he has the powers of a king because the U.S. Supreme Court said he has “absolute immunity” for anything he does as President. He could order the military to murder his critics and say it was for “national security.” Absolute immunity!
Better still, he doesn’t have to work! He flies home to Mar-a-Lago every weekend to golf. He signs a few executive orders every day. His crew of mean-spirited, hateful people does the heavy lifting; they write the executive orders. They think of new ways to diminish federal programs that help people in need. They are hard at work thinking up ways to reduce the number of people who get Medicare orcSocial Security.
Really, what Trump have to do other than sign executive orders? Not much. His staff knows not to bore him with intelligence briefings.
It’s true that he has to tolerate Little X, Elon’s snot-nosed kid, who put a booger on the Resolute Desk. (Trump was not content to order the cleaning of the historic desk, he sent it out to be completely refinished, all because of a booger.)
Great job! All expenses paid. Full-time security for Trump and all his family, and he “works” fifteen minutes a day signing executive orders that his mean team wrote.
The USA was a great country while it lasted. Will he name it Trumplandia after he has taken Canada and Greenland?
Politico analyzed four ways he could try for a third term:
- Repeal or revise the 22nd Amendment. But that seems highly unlikely since it would require 3/4 of the states to ratify any change in the Constitutuon.
- Sidestep the Constitution by having JD Vance run for President and Trump as Vice President, with Vance pledging to resign if elected so Trump can be President again.
- Ignore the Constitution. Trump could run again, a subservient Republican national Committee would endorse him, and a supplicant Supreme Court would comply.
- Defy the Constitution. Refuse to leave office. Call a national emergency and suspend another election.
All the stuff of Fascism. But none of it beyond Trump’s egotism.

DJT can want what he wants in his privately-constructed psychological bubble. But Democracy is NOT a privatized theme park for the pathological.
“The Country Needed Yesterday…
It felt like a nationwide catharsis, a huge release of the emotions that have built up since this disaster happened. For what has felt like eons we have wondered what could we do…seemingly wandering in a puddle of uncertainty and hate. That is awful ground to grow hope in.Yesterday wasn’t about this hand or that hand, not about any color…it was about doing what was right…about trying to preserve our hard fought rights for all people, even those that countered our protest…it’s only right.Yesterday showed that hope in this country is not entirely buried…people are shaking off their collective ennui and starting to exercise their forgotten voices. Hope grows in America!”

kathyirwin: Apparently, THIS democracy is now “a privatized theme park for the pathological” and the kind of stupid that gets a lot of people dead.
On Morning Joe this morning, they were talking about what it was going to be like when all this plays out, as if everyone will remain quite comfortable until it does. This is from a commentator/historian who apparently sees himself as somehow standing outside of history.
Things do “play themselves out” in history, you know, like wars, and plagues, and family squabbles where people are so disgusted and disgusting that everyone gets ghosted, and then someone dies.
BTW, the government worker guy who “told” that sending that man to prison in another country as a gang member was a mistake, drew the ire of Trump the Truth Hater. Trump is begging for someone to stop him. If not Roberts, or Johnson, or arm-twisters in the GOP Congress, who? CBK

“I’ve never been a partisan person. I always respected the different opinions of my Republican colleagues and friends. But today’s Republicans are not the party of Reagan, with true statesmen like John McCain, Mitt Romney, the elder Bush, etc. MAGAs are not “the conservatives” we used to respect. If you consider yourself a MAGA, you lack honor and ethics, in my view. Would you want your kids to have Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Matt Gaetz as their role models?”

Let’s at least get this right: Just because a judge’s ruling makes a left winger happy, or an right-winger happy, DOES NOT MEAN it is generated from a left-or-right wing position of bias.
ANY ruling is going to make some political position happy or sad. Calling the judge left or right wing does not mean the ruling is necessarily biased. That’s why judges hold the law so dear–they are committed to it and not to their own political positions.
It was this principle (of honoring the rule of law and their oaths to the Constitution in a specific context rather than one’s own personal views either way) that TED CRUZ completely overlooked in the recent Congressional hearing where he used the increased numbers of injunctions against Trump to “prove” that judges were on a witch hunt against him.
Amy Klobuchar called Cruz out on it, saying that the number of injunctions related directly to how many/much Trump had broken the law, and that BTW most judges were Republican appointed; but by that time, “Cancun Cruz” had left the hearing. Nevertheless, Klobuchar was completely clear on the matter.
I’m still gobsmacked to see Congressman Cruz’s total corruption displayed so openly on the floor of Congress, especially since I KNOW that HE KNOWS BETTER. And that makes it worse than a Jim Jones thing. Cruz’s poison is of his own making. CBK

Option 2 seems unlikely; JD Vance is an ambitious man.

Trump can’t hold any office after he’s been president twice. He can’t be vice president.

Trump is in favor of anything that will allow him to maintain and expand his power. He recently used emergency economic orders to allow him impose tariffs. Some critics fear Trump may try to declare martial law if demonstrations become more widespread or violent. Nobody knows what Trump will do, but he will try to cling to power by any means he can.
Instead of meeting the bodies of our four fallen soldiers from Lithuania in Delaware, Trump spent the weekend at a golf outing sponsored by the Saudis at his golf club in Florida. We know where his priorities are.

There seems to me a way. President Trump could declare a national emergency because of immigration or socialist vermin or something, as he did to build the wall and as Biden tried in order to forgive student loans, and use his emergency powers to seize private property. Yes, he can do that, Constitutionally. He could seize the free press and communications media, isolating all of us. He could seize the assets of his political opponents. Elon already has everyone’s account information. Who would stop Don Trump, without money or the ability to communicate, from declaring martial law, with military leaders unwilling to say no? The right to peacefully assemble gets shot with so-called nonlethal beanbags in the nuts when the police get upset — I remember George Floyd. Who would stop Trump from anointing himself for life? All he would need is an act of violence he could use as an excuse to scapegoat his enemies, like a fire in the Reichstag or something. It’s been done before. There could be a way.

Agreed, but besides declaring Martial Law after a demonstration gone violent, whether by the demonstrators or by infiltrators from the Right, we really need to be worried about him starting a war with Iran. I’m sure Netanyahu would love it and join in. Once we’re at war–all bets are off. Can’t go against our Commander-in-Chief while we’re at war! I hope I’m wrong, but buckle up and don’t be surprised…..
