Recently the Network for Public Education and the Education Law Center sponsored a zoom conversation with Nick Surgey. Nick is an experienced investigative journalist who works with an organization called Documented, which digs into the Dark Money groups undermining Public schools and other democratic institutions. Nick has done the legwork that identified the money and people behind the home schooling movement, as well as the rightwing Alliance for Defending Freedom. He has worked with the Center for Media and Democracy and other pro-democracy organizations.
This is a discussion you should definitely tune into.
Has anyone seen John Oliver’s report on Homeschooling in the US?
Warning, watching the video may trigger your emotions from rage to horror before he’s done.
Home schooling is a system where the parents have all the rights, and children are at the mercy of their parents’ decisions. For some unlucky children this lack of regulation can result in abuse, exploitation and even death. Oliver does a good job exploring these concerns, issues and the politicking behind the scenes.
Thank you, Lloyd. I hadn’t seen it.
What was new and shocking for me in this interesting discussion was right wing Christian Seven Mountain mandate. It is almost like manifest destiny for Christian fascists, and it is a scary plan for those of us that believe in democracy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Mountain_Mandate
Diane, this was a brilliant conversation. Thank you so much.
Democratic Ky. Gov. Beshears is airing an ad that features a mother telling the viewing audience that she becomes a Momma Bear when dollars are taken from her kids in public schools and given to private schools.
It’s a very effective ad and Beshears is ahead of his opponent by 16 pts.
MORE OF THIS!!!! I hope the freaking national Democratic Party is listening. Those people haven’t a clue how to use the media properly.
They are not listening. Recently, Democratic Gov. Shapiro in Pennsylvania confirmed the image of Democrats as the elite by supporting $100 mil. in state dollars for private schools.
Meanwhile, in November, there’s a critical Penn. Supreme Court judge race between a right wing Catholic judge (no doubt she’ll like religious charter schools) and, a Democrat who attended Catholic schools. We can hope the latter is a defender of democracy unlike Sen. Manchin.
I wish more governors were like Andy Beshear.
