In case you missed it, asi did, CNN will rerun its special about the two billionaires who are trying to buy control of Texas—this Friday night.
Ed Lavandera, one of the producers, tweeted:
So many of you have asked how to re-watch #DeepInThePocketsofTexas on @CNN, the program will re-air this Friday night July 29th, 11pmET/10pmCT.
awesome
i am sure CNN could make an equally revealing show about all the dirty dealings in Florida as well.
CNN could make a documentary about similar corruption in most states.
Nope. Corruption in Flor-uh-duh would require a series. Something like the old TV show Dallas would work. Just sub for the oil business sugar beets and running both a fundamentalist megachurch.
This was absolutely eye opening. I’m wondering what other states and organizations they are influencing.
Texas-
The University of Dallas (conservative Catholic) has a student population about the same size as Hillsdale College which has morphed over time and can, currently, be viewed as conservative, both conservative Catholic and protestant and likely, Koch-style libertarian.
Prof. Gladden Pappin (Harvard grad.) is at the University of Dallas. He has international prominence as a political theorist, appearing on Tucker Carlson’s show. EWTN’s National Catholic Register (associated with wealthy conservative Catholic, Tim Busch) posted an article, 3-31-2022, “Why are some Catholics so intrigued by Hungary’s populist government….Hungary’s growing appeal among a set of American Catholic Political Thinkers.” The article elaborates with the statement about Hungary, “every organ of the state has an obligation to protect Christian culture.”
Hungary’s leader went full fascist this week in his comments about race.
Btw-Pappin and Republican Michael Anton (lead reviewer of Bronze Age Pervert’s work), who is prominent in government circles, were both part of the original American Affairs blog that was viewed as pro-Trump.
The publication, Post Liberal Order SubStack, is by 4 right wing Christian intellectuals, Patrick Deneen at Notre Dame, Gladden Pappin, Chad Pecknold at Catholic University and Adrian Vermuele who is at Harvard. Vermuele has explicitly called for discrimination in favor of Catholics in the immigration process.
Defense of democracy requires identification of its enemies.
I recommend that women read the article about modest clothing on the front page of the University of Dallas student newspaper. Each GOP vote is a vote against women’s rights.
Thank you. The stars at night aren’t big and bright
Deep in the pockets of Texas.
In Ohio, JD Vance (funded by Peter Thiel who said women voting in a capitalistic democracy is an oxymoron) is courting conservative religious. In an interview at Catholic Current, Vance said, “Abortion has a morally distorting effect on the entire society.”
MSNBC, this week, showed a videotape of a Vance interview in which he appears to urge spouses to stay in violent marriages. Vance, when questioned, said, context was required to fully understand the point he was making.
Women who vote GOP risk losing their rights and the rights of all women.
Don’t know how I came about to the following but I thought you might enjoy. . . in a sick sort of way. https://catholicfundamentalism.com/
Duane,
You’re correct I don’t enjoy the subject I’ve become familiar with and, shocked by – conservative Catholic right wing politicking. I am angered that media pulls its punches with one of the two religions in the Pat Buchanan alliance.
People on the left are eager to throw darts at Liberty University. Why is Hillsdale portrayed as evangelical when Leonard Leo and Clarence Thomas have strong ties there? Why no darts at Gladden Pappin’s university, at Notre Dame’s Pahara-like organization within ACE or, at Patrick Deneen? Why not at Catholic University of America (Chad Pecknold)?
Thanks Duane. I enjoyed it in an historical sort of way. It reminded me that Protestants in England during the Thirty Years war read lurid accounts of Catholic atrocities in that war that inflamed public opinion to the point of insurrection in the English revolution. The irony of modern Protestant voters being all glassy eyed about the catholic Supreme Court is to rich to pass up.
In good news, Clarence Thomas is no longer listed as a lecturer at George Washington. A petition with 11,000 signatures and 50 letters….
Anyone without money who votes GOP risks losing whatever rights and privileges that are left.
Good point, Yossarian. The fascists will come for powerless white men who are Christian, including Catholics, after they are done with women and POC.
Diane,
Have you seen how Florida (Ron Desantis) is rewriting Civics education? It is now being told from a Republican, evangelical Christian platform . Slides can be viewed via the Miami Herald. Slides are alarming —for example in having a Baptist preacher respond to Jefferson about the separation of church and state and stating the foundation of our government is based in Christian religion. One slide states that “common misconceptions” are that the constitution is a “living document”. It certainly is anti-Jeffersonian and anti-Enlightenment. Who is behind this? https://www.facebook.com/groups/276057677055002/permalink/739830034011095/

!!!!!!!!!
I saw a meme today referring to Texas as Howdy Arabia. Seems to fit. And not far from Talabama! Of course, this refers to the lack of rights for women, but parallels are there.
Thanks for the laugh.
