In this post, he explores the disastrous consequences of the policies of school choice zealots, especially the DeVos family. Every intervention made things worse, especially for the poorest children, who live in Detroit. They were not simply abandoned. Their schools and city were ransacked by raiders of DPE.

Just reported that Rex TIllerson is out as Secretary so now is Betsy Devos next to go?? I mean how is it that this woman continues to fly under the radar and continue with her dumb wit choice bull crap.
Funny thing though, I was thinking that the longer Devos stays in the position the better as this woman continually screws things up – including her visit to the Florida school where the shooting took place. So, let her stay as long as she wants.
Maybe I am cynical but I think Trump fired Tillerson to distract attention from Betsy DeVos.
He can never fire her because she gave $200 million to GOP senators
Every cabinet officer serves at the pleasure of the president. When confirmed, a cabinet officer must submit an undated letter of resignation to the President. He/she just fills in the date, when he/she decides that the services of the cabinet officer is no longer required, for any reason, or for no reason.

Devos was the Trump pick to fill the swamp so that public edcuation will fail!
As Elizabeth Warrenshows in this searing document, Betsy DeVos has consistently violated her oath of office. She has rolled back civil rights protections for students with disabilities, for students of color, and for victims of sexual violence. She has protected the interests of predatory for-profit colleges, not the students who were bilked by them. She has appointed high-level personnel who have conflicts of interest (as she herself may have if her vast holdings were completely revealed). She has worked tirelessly to weaken public education. Her budget proposals seek to divert billions of dollars from the schools that enroll 90% of students to private and religious schools, which have the power to select their students and to deny service to students they don’t want.
When she was chosen, DeVos was known as a major financier for the privatization movement. Her foundation has long worked closely with the Koch brothers, ALEC, and others who are intent on harming public schools, eliminating unions, and removing any standards for teachers. She is a dedicated enemy of public education, of unions, and of the teaching profession, and a champion of charter schools, voucher schools, online schools, and for-profit higher education.
Betsy DeVos should not be Secretary of Education. Senator Warren provides the evidence for her campaign to destroy the functions and the purpose of the Department that DeVos heads.
If we lived in a sane society, DeVos should be public enemy #1, not leading the DOE.
Well, Tillerson is now out because he rumpled some feathers over the past year. DeVos is now starting to unravel right in front of our eyes and is starting to embarrass “The Administration”. Maybe she will be the next to go? Although I don’t think her replacement would be much better?

Trump believes in torture. He said so on the campaign trail. He believes that cops should treat suspects roughly when they arrest them. So he will have the CIA chief he wants. At least it is not Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
What DeVos did in Detroit should be a cautionary template for other cities and states. Billionaires with dark money that manipulate laws and buy political favor are out to destroy public education. Blue states are not immune to this right wing virus as these zealots that sometimes have lots of money to buy access to legislators. They sometimes form an alliance with those on the left that seek to destroy public education, and attacks have occurred in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York. Once these groups gain traction in a state, they will destroy the common asset of public education and leave it with stranded costs and stranded students, as we have witnessed in Detroit. States and cities need better laws to protect their public institutions from outside influence and dark money.

Here district and board of education leaders are gleefully dismantling and privatizing from within under the guise of community schools–why share the public education budget trough of 1billion dollars/$35K/student? and why build movement across enormous chasm of race, ethnic, citizenship, class, ability? Recent letter from group of parents trying to fight back, sent to elected board of education and district who plan to remove classroom teachers midyear, no replacements to be offered.
