Mercedes Schneider describes Betsy DeVoid’s effort on Twitter to recover from her awful interview on 60 Minutes, which made her appear ignorant and clueless, even about her own state.
In the interview, she feigned ignorance when Lesley Stahl said that the state’s scores on NAEP dropped precipitously over the past decade of choice, which Betsy engineered. But Lesley Stahl knew.
The best Betsy could come up with was that Detroit charters—which select their students— have higher scores than Detroit public schools. But even the charter scores were abysmal.
If Betsy wants to argue the miracle of choice, Detroit is not a good example. No miracle.
“Three hour delay” for school here this morning…as the winter of 2018 grinds on. Ahhhh…..MORE TIME to think about Besty DeVos. Oh my God. I’d rather drive through deep snow and be in school…be in school doing just about anything.
If DeVos had sounded even slightly coherent the other night on 60 Minutes, the Trumpians would have been celebrating. And, of course, therein lies a really big problem: “the bar” (wherever that may be) has been dragged so ridiculously low by this current regime (really, into the mud) that down is becoming up for some people -in a classic, Orwellian sense.
Diane- so excited you are coming to Kalamazoo . Thank you so much.

That still doesn’t answer the question. The question wasn’t “charter schools in Detroit”
The question was “public schools in Michigan”. And the NEAP numbers that DeVos tweeted shows that Stahl was right. Michigan scores have gone down, not up.
More Trumpian resignations hit the hot news this morning. Alas, Betsy is not among them, proving once again the truth of the old book that is gaining a new readership, The Peter Principle: Why Things Go Wrong. People will rise to their level of incompetence. DeVos give new meaning to incompetence.
