It is important to bear in mind that in one respect Trump is a true genius: Branding.

He created the TRUMP brand. He puts the brand on buildings that he doesn’t own; he outsources the brand and monetizes it. There are apartment buildings that he didn’t build, doesn’t manage, and doesn’t own branded TRUMP. As he showed during the primaries, he has TRUMP wine, TRUMP steaks, TRUMP everything.

He branded his opponents in the Republican primaries to ridicule them: “Little Marco,” “Low Energy” Jeb, “Lyin’ Ted.” Anyone who was within reach of him got branded and demeaned.

Then in the general, it was “Crooked Hillary.” How many times did he say that phrase? Hundreds of times? Thousands of times? He said that within the first week of his presidency, he would direct his Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her many crimes. What was the chant at his rallies and the National Republican Convention: “Lock her up!”

Now he is in the process of demonizing the mainstream media: the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS: they are all liars, the reporters are the most dishonest people in the world, they spew “fake news.” They lie. All of this from an administration that lies every day and calls its lies “alternative facts.”

Now we see a presidency that has a curious connection to the rest of the world. Trump demeans our allies but says nary a critical word about Putin. Strange.

During the campaign, James Comey announced that the FBI was investigating Hillary’s emails because she used a private server and might have compromised national security. In June of 2016, he announced that the investigation was over and that no prosecutor would prosecute her based on the evidence at hand. Then, as we all know, Comey announced 10 days before the election that the investigation was being reopened because of the discovery of emails on the computer of Anthony Wiener, husband of Huma Abedin, Hillary’s close associate. Three days before the election–after millions of early votes had been cast–Comey once again cleared Hillary. His intervention in the election was unprecedented for any FBI director.

He said he had to intervene because he promised to keep Congress informed.

What he never told Congress was that the FBI was simultaneously investigating links between the Trump campaign and Russian government operatives.

Why did he report on one investigation, but not the other?

What were the contacts that the FBI was investigating?

Why were campaign staff communicating with Russian officials?

Will the FBI investigation be controlled by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, one of Trump’s closest allies?

Why was Hillary smeared as “Crooked Hillary” every day of the general election, but there is no special prosecutor?

Is it true that the President uses an Android cellphone that is not secured?

Is it true that Trump discusses matters of high national security in the restaurant of his private club?

Is it true that the top officials in the Trump administration use private email servers?

Is it true that this administration is “running like a finely-tuned machine”?

We will have to leave these questions for historians to figure out.

Since Trump filed for the 2020 campaign on Inauguration Day, the nation will be in campaign mode nonstop for the next four years.

Republicans in The House of Representatives have proposed legislation that would require states to adopt vouchers or lose their federal funding. This is an outrage! This is step one of the Trump-DeVos agenda to force vouchers and charters on states that do not want them. This is a blatant misuse of federal power to coerce states to go along with religious zealots like DeVos.

The legislation, HR 610, has been filed. Let your Representative in Congress know that you oppose this egregious federal overreach. Support The Network for Public Education as we rally supporters of public schools to repel this obnoxious legislation.

The language of the legislation and the steps you can take to oppose it are included here.

If you do not want your tax dollars to fund evangelical religious schools, madrassas, or yeshivas, get active.

If you believe in public schools with certified teachers who teach modern science and history, not religious fervor, get active.

Speak up. Speak out. Defend separation of church and state. Defend your community public schools. Stop the raid on the public school funds.

Ken Previti proclaimed that today was #FakePresidentsDay 2017. He was not alone. There were demonstrations in many cities and communities, whose theme was “Not My President.” Republican Town Hall meetings were thronged with angry people.

For years, I have heard many people under the age of 50 complain regretfully that they were not around to participate in the protests of the 1960s. Now they have a chance. Not to protest a war (yet), but to protest what appears to be a rigged election (Trump’s term). To protest a series of executive orders. To protest an executive order closing our borders to seven Muslim-majority nations. To protest an unending series of lies expressed by the President or his surrogates (alternative facts). To protest the building of a wall on the southern border. To protest roundups of undocumented immigrants, some of whom had done nothing wrong. To protest the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. To protest daily attacks on the press.

Are the 1960s alive again?

Trump has started holding 2020 campaign rallies. (He filed for his re-election campaign in 2020 on Inauguration Day.) His first was in Florida. Like every demagogue, he needs to get out there in front of the cheering mobs and restate his love for them and hear them holler their love for him. So much more fun than hanging out in the empty White House surrounded by ghosts of predecessors who were mostly men of character, integrity, and intellect. None of them as great a scoundrel as Trump. So, he is #1 in that department.

At the rally in Florida, he warned that bringing in immigrants is an invitation to terrorism (does that include Melania?). He rattled off nations that have had terror attacks and included Sweden. He asked the crowd if they had heard what happened on Friday night, the very night before the campaign rally. Sweden, can you believe it!

Later when it was pointed out that there was no terrorist attack in Sweden on Friday, he said he was referring to a rise in crime in Sweden, which obviously did not happen on Friday.

John Oliver reviewed Trump’s rally here.

Others said he was referring to Sweden’s high rape statistics, which they blame on immigrants from Muslim countries. But I googled “Sweden Rape Statistics Muslim” and came up with an article in Wikipedia that said 1) each country has its own definition of what constitutes rape; what some countries call a sexual assault is classified as rape in Sweden; 2) in 1996, Sweden reported three times the average number of rapes as in 35 other European countries. That was long before the immigrant surge of the past few years.

In Sweden, a man who groped women and grabbed them by their genitals without their consent would be labeled a rapist.

I have received several copies of this statement about Trump’s accomplishments.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it looks like Trump is actually making America great again. Just look at the progress made since the election:

1. Unprecedented levels of ongoing civic engagement.

2. Millions of Americans now know who their state and federal representatives are without having to google.

3. Millions of Americans are exercising more. They’re holding signs and marching every week.

4. Alec Baldwin is great again. Everyone’s forgotten he’s kind of a jerk.

5. The Postal Service is enjoying the influx cash due to stamps purchased by millions of people for letter and postcard campaigns.

6. Likewise, the pharmaceutical industry is enjoying record growth in sales of anti-depressants.

7. Millions of Americans now know how to call their elected officials and know exactly what to say to be effective.

8. Footage of town hall meetings is now entertaining.

9. Tens of millions of people are now correctly spelling words like emoluments, narcissist, fascist, misogynist, holocaust and cognitive dissonance.

10. Everyone knows more about the rise of Hitler than they did last year.

11. Everyone knows more about legislation, branches of power and how checks and balances work.

12. Marginalized groups are experiencing a surge in white allies.

13. White people in record numbers have just learned that racism is not dead. (See #6)

14. White people in record numbers also finally understand that Obamacare IS the Affordable Care Act.

15. Stephen Colbert’s “Late Night” finally gained the elusive #1 spot in late night talk shows, and Seth Meyers is finding his footing as today’s Jon Stewart.

16. “Mike Pence” has donated millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood since Nov. 9th.

17. Melissa FREAKING McCarthy.

18. Travel ban protesters put $24 million into ACLU coffers in just 48 hours, enabling them to hire 200 more attorneys. Lawyers are now heroes.

19. As people seek veracity in their news sources, respected news outlets are happily reporting a substantial increase in subscriptions, a boon to a struggling industry vital to our democracy.

20. Live streaming court cases and congressional sessions are now as popular as the Kardashians.

21. Massive cleanup of facebook friend lists.

22. People are reading classic literature again. Sales of George Orwell’s “1984” increased by 10,000% after the inauguration. (Yes, that is true. 10,000%. 9th grade Lit teachers all over the country are now rock stars.)

23. More than ever before, Americans are aware that education is important. Like, super important.

24. Now, more than anytime in history, everyone believes that anyone can be President. Seriously, anyone.

Please add to this list that Betsy DeVos helped persuade the public that their public schools may be privatized and taken over by corporate entities. And, membership in the Network for the Public Education has surged from from 25,000 to 350,000.

Mike Rose is a justly celebrated author and a professor at UCLA. He writes like a dream, as the saying goes.

On his blog, he recently posted his musings about what the Trump administration would look like if seen through the lens of Dante’s Inferno.

Rose indulges in a great guilty pleasure by imagining the punishment awaiting some of the key players in contemporary American politics. Donald Trump, his cabinet, and his advisors present so many threats to all that’s holy that in addition to political action we need to draw on every artistic and cultural resource at our disposal to give us clarity and hope. If we’re forced to gambol on the edge of the abyss, let’s use every dance move we got.

Hell consists of nine concentric circles located deep within the earth: Abandon all hope ye who enter here. Each circle is the realm of a particular sin—lust, greed, violence, treachery—with each descending circle representing more and more grievous evil until, finally, there is the center of hell where in the lowest depth, Satan is frozen eternally in ice, futilely beating his massive wings.

Part of Dante’s poetic genius is that the punishment he creates for each of the sins is a physical analogue of the sin itself, and he renders the sights, sounds, and smells of the physical with grisly vividness. Gluttons, for example, wallow for eternity in a freezing slush of the rotted garbage their earthly indulgence produced. Fortune tellers and diviners (part of the circle of fraud) sought in life the unnatural power of foretelling the future, so in hell their heads are twisted forever backward, their eyes blinded by tears “that [run] down the cleft of their buttocks.” You get the idea.

In my Trumpian Inferno, there will be a special circle for the president’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, his chief of staff, Reince Priebus, and his counselor, Kellyanne Conway. These three long-time Republican operatives were each critical of Donald Trump during the GOP primary—Conway called him “a man who seems to be offending his way to the nomination”—but made their peace with the devil in exchange for power and limelight. Through an endless flow of double-talk, re-direction, avoidance, and flat-out lying, this unholy trio has thrown into fast-forward the degradation of our political language. For eternity, then, let them each be bound to podiums jammed close together in the blinding light of a press conference, repeating face-to-face ad nauseam and ad infinitum the blather that has become their stock-in-trade.

Chief strategist Steve Bannon who revels in provocation and shock-and-awe strategy would be buried forever in the middle of a vast desert, just enough below the surface that his endless flailing and blustering produces the tiniest puff of sand, seen by no one, not ever, affecting nothing at all.

What does he envisage as the fate of Donald Trump? Open the link to find out and don’t share the secret in your comments.

At his rally in Florida yesterday, he told the crowd about a terrorist incident in Sweden, but there was no terrorist incident in Sweden.

There were however terrorist attacks in Iraq, directed against Muslims, but these attacks do not appear on Trump’s radar because he is only concerned about white people.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he is of Swedish descent, but that isn’t true either. His father and grandfather were German. That’s nothing to be ashamed of. Why does he lie about everything?

Want to know how often Trump lies? Politifact says that 50% of his statements are either “false” or “pants on fire.” Another 20% are rated “mostly false.” Only 16% of his statements are rated either “true” or “mostly true.” 14% are “half true.”

The default position for any thinking citizen is to assume that whatever he says, other than his name, is not true. Check the facts before believing anything he says.

The Trump administration proves what some of us long feared and suspected: the crackpot fringe of the right wants to dumb down the populace by eliminating funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

These Yahoos hate education. They want the public to be raised in ignorance of science, history, and art. They want to eliminate funding for programs that educate the public. As long as you have a Bible, what more do you need?

Arts organizations across the country are rallying to save the meager amounts of federal funds that is available to supports the arts, humanities, and culture.

“As the news spread that the White House budget office had included the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowments for the Arts and the Humanities on a list of programs it was considering trying to eliminate, arts leaders at large and small organizations around the nation reacted with alarm — and began making plans to fight for their survival.

“The federal government plays a very small role in funding the arts, especially compared with other affluent countries. Together, the three programs that may be targeted account for less than one-tenth of 1 percent of annual federal spending. But even if the arts get only crumbs, administrators said, they are crumbs worth fighting for: much-needed money that supports community projects, new works and making the arts accessible to people in different parts of the country and to those who are not wealthy.

“And after years of culture-war debates in which conservatives took aim at the programs, questioning the value of some of the art that was publicly funded, arts groups are pressing the case that the federal money they receive supports organizations — and jobs — in all 50 states, both red and blue.

“The N.E.A. has a big impact in the middle of country — even more so, I suspect, than in urban areas where funding is more diversified,” said Martin Miller, the executive director of TheatreSquared, a regional theater in Fayetteville, Ark., that bills itself as the northwest part of the state’s only year-round professional theater.

“Losing the N.E.A. would mean that many smaller, mid-American arts companies couldn’t weather a recession,” he said, noting that the endowment supports both state and regional arts councils. “Losing these companies would mean fewer jobs, a lower quality of life and less local spending in the small towns that need it most.”

“Many arts officials said they were gravely concerned that the programs were back on the chopping block.
“It’s another example of our democracy being threatened,” the actor Robert Redford, the president and founder of the Sundance Institute, which helps filmmakers, said in a telephone interview. “Arts are essential. They describe and critique our society.”

“President Trump is already facing pressure from some of his allies to preserve the programs. Daryl Roth, a prominent Broadway producer (“Kinky Boots,” “Indecent”) whose husband, Steven Roth, is a Trump adviser, said that she opposed eliminating the programs and that she had expressed her view to the Trump administration and would continue to do so.
“The concept of ending federal funding to the N.E.A. and to the many nonprofit arts organizations, artists, writers, cultural institutions, museums and all recipients that would be affected is of course of grave concern to me,” Ms. Roth wrote in an email. “Arts education in the schools, theater groups, music and dance programs help revitalize local communities, both spiritually and economically, across the country.”

“The fate of the three organizations is still far from clear: An internal memo that circulated within the Office of Management and Budget last week, which was obtained by The New York Times, noted that the list of programs targeted for elimination could still change. Officials at both of the endowments said they had not received any official word from the White House. But the programs have long been in the cross-hairs of conservatives.

“Romina Boccia, a fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, said Congress should eliminate federal arts grants altogether. “The minuscule portion of art funding that comes from the federal government does not support the arts in any meaningful way; rather, it distorts the art market toward what is politically acceptable,” she said. She also questioned the need for the federal government to support public broadcasting.

“But arts administrators around the nation said in interviews that culture had enjoyed bipartisan support in recent years, and that they were hopeful their elected officials could be persuaded to keep the programs. They began making plans last month to make the case for the arts to their audiences, their well-connected board members and Congress.”

For more than the past decade, Bill Gates has dabbled in education. He launches initiative after initiative, with slim or no research, and all of them flop. While he dabbles–whether it is the Common Core or evaluating teachers by test scores–he messes up other people’s lives with no accountability for his screw-ups. He just moves on to his Next Big Idea.

Mercedes Schneider points out that the Gates Foundation spends more money “reforming education” in the U.S., but has nothing to show for it.

Curiously, the Gates Foundation’s annual letter doesn’t even mention education! (Correction: Leonie Haimson pointed out that education was not mentioned in the Foundation’s annual letter; its annual report is not published yet. So maybe we will hear some Trump-style claims about the successes of VAM and charters, and other DeVos strategies for privatization.)

Will he butt out? Will he admit error?

I saw him on TV Saturday night warning about the dangers of bio-terrorism. A few weeks ago, he met with Donald Trump in his golden penthouse and came away expressing admiration, prophesying that Trump had the chance to be transformative, like John F. Kennedy, by driving education innovation with new technologies. What’s on his mind? Saving humanity or market share?

Donald Trump is a demagogue. He is a danger to our democracy. If you doubt this, read his remarks at a “campaign rally” in Melbourne, Florida. (He has already filed for his 2020 re-election campaign, meaning that his tenure in office will be an endless campaign).

Trump said that the press is not just his enemy, they are the enemy of the American people.

This is a direct attack on the First Amendment. This is an attack on freedom of the press. This is Trump’s attempt to intimidate the free press. These are the unhinged rants of a demagogue. This is a direct attack on our democracy.

Fortunately, not every Republican grovels at Trump’s feet. Senator John McCain said it: this is how authoritarianism begins.

John McCain is one of 52 Republican senators. Where are the other 51? Do they agree that a free press is the enemy of the American people? Do they applaud as Trump calls a press conference and demands “friendly” questions? Do they smirk when he falsely claims to have won the greatest electoral college victory since Ronald Reagan? Do they care that he was corrected in public and all he could say was that “someone gave him that information,” without acknowledging that it was not true? Were they concerned when he repeated this outright lie at his campaign rally the very next day? Is there any other Republican senator willing to stand up to this pathological liar and con man?

If the Republican Party swallows this self-degradation without a murmur, they disgrace themselves and their party.

If they watch in silence as Trump keeps up his calculated and demented attacks on the free press, this we know: This is how democracy begins to die.

We can’t let this happen. We must organize, join forces, work together to save our democracy from this egomaniac.

Join with your allies. Go to your Congressman’s town halls. Call his or her district office. Join demonstrations. Protest. Resist. Do not rest until this ignorant narcissist is returned to private life, free once again to cheat his fellow citizens.

It is time to take back our country and restore our democracy.
