A few years ago, I came across this 1979 special performance by Dolly Parton and Carol Burnett. Watch them interact. They are wonderful. As they talk, they write a song, then invite the audience to join in. It is funny, warm, and happy. I think I have watched it 10 times.
“No One Picks Like a Nashville Picker Picks.”
It’s wonderful to watch two stars at the top of their game.

Thanks a heap!

Lucky Melissa!!
This is a rhetorical question, Roy: How can such a wonderful, kind, generous person like Dolly come out of a state led by unkind, ungenerous people?

I will give an unrhetorical answer. The overwhelming majority of Tennesseans are taught that they are in danger of the fire of hell, but are saved by an authoritarian God. So when an authoritarian political leader wants to exploit that, he tells the population to fear, then convinces the fearful he is the antidote. So many people had moved to Tennessee with one of those two attitudes by 1992 that Al Gore knew he could never get elected again, so he chose the VP role, despite the lack of VP success before Bush I. Since that time, massive migration has so turned the state into a reactionary haven that one town has experienced the attempted takeover by a right wing hate group.
