Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth doesn’t like people who are not white males, straight white males to be exact. when a board of Navy admirals presented their candidates to be one-star admirals, Hegseth struck the names of four woman and two Black persons on the list. He also struck the names of four white men. When he was first appointed by Trump to his post, he began the purge of high-ranking women and Blacks. Hegseth is a bigot.
In a move that disproportionately targets women and minority officers, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently blocked the promotions of nine Navy officers who had been selected by a board of senior Navy admirals.
The net result of Mr. Hegseth’s intervention is a slate of 22 nominees to be one-star admirals that bears little resemblance to the broader force these officers will help lead.
Three of the officers removed by Mr. Hegseth from the promotion list are women and two are Black men. An additional four are white men.
Mr. Hegseth’s actions, which appear to violate the rules governing a promotion system that is supposed to be apolitical and merit-based, were described by five current and former defense officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel matters.
No female officers were included on the new one-star list, which was released publicly in late May, despite the fact that women make up about 21 percent of the active-duty Navy. The list appears to include only two nonwhite officers, even though sailors who identify as racial minorities make up about 38 percent of the active-duty Navy.
Mr. Hegseth’s removal of the officers from the one-star list is highly unusual, said the current and former defense officials. According to Pentagon rules, the defense secretary is only supposed to pull officers from the list for moral, mental, physical or professional failings that raise questions about the officers’ fitness to lead.
Mr. Hegseth’s actions are the latest in a series of firings and personnel interventions that seem to be driven by his anti-diversity politics rather than the officers’ performance. Taken together, they could reshape the military’s top ranks for years to come.
Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, declined to say why Mr. Hegseth pulled the officers off the Navy one-star list. “Military promotions are given to those who have earned them,” Mr. Parnell said. “The department will never consider the color of a service member’s skin or their gender as a factor in promotions.” The Navy declined to comment.
Since taking office, Mr. Hegseth has fired or sidelined nearly three dozen senior military officers as part of a broader campaign designed to purge the Pentagon of leaders he has disparaged as “foolish,” “reckless” and “woke.” He has consistently refused to explain why he has chosen to fire officers or pull them from promotion lists.
His scrutiny has fallen heavily on female and minority officers, who have borne the brunt of the dismissals. Nearly 60 percent of the senior officers Mr. Hegseth has fired are female or Black, Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said in recent Senate testimony. Women and minorities currently account for fewer than 20 percent of all generals and admirals.
“You are hollowing out the military’s bench of experience and highest-performing senior officers, while making young officers wonder if they should continue to serve,” Mr. Reed told Mr. Hegseth at another recent hearing.
Among those dismissed were Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., the second African American to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to lead the Navy.
Earlier this year, Mr. Hegseth also removed four colonels — two Black men and two women — from the Army’s list of nominees for one-star general over the objections of Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll. Mr. Driscoll insisted that the officers had a long history of exemplary service and had done nothing wrong.
Officers selected for one-star rank are picked by a board of admirals or generals who review hundreds of personnel files over the course of meetings that can span two weeks. Only about 5 percent of those eligible for promotion to one-star are chosen, making it the most competitive board in the U.S. military.
The lists are then reviewed by the service secretaries and the defense secretary, who under Pentagon rules may strike names in limited circumstances, like the emergence of new information that raises questions about the officers’ qualifications for service.
Despite the rigorous and competitive selection process, Hegseth is certain that women and Blacks are chosen only to satisfy diversity goals.

Headself is actually the one benefiting from preferential treatment. His appointment is purely due to his being beholden to Trump for his position. He lacks competence. Plus he is a prick.

Looking forward to the day Hegsith is finally demoted to the level of position at which he was barely still competent.

What a jerk! This retired AF officer finds this guy’s behavior reprehensible and disgusting. Politicising the military is dangerous, irresponsible, and Trump Republican behavior.

You have zero knowledge of whether these criticisms of Hegseth are legitimate; it just fits your preferred narrative. It has been well-established that the Biden administration effectively had racial and gender quotas for promotions. It’s likely that many of these recent nominations for promotion were not based on merit. BTW, merit is back in the military – that’s the main reason why all branches are meeting their recruiting targets now, something that never occurred during the Biden years.

Mel Shaw,
The officers on the list were not chosen by Biden. They were carefully vetted by their superior officers. Hegseth had very limited authority to strike their names. No one was surprised that he removed the black and female officers: he is a bigot and a misogynist.
As The New York Times wrote:
“Mr. Hegseth’s removal of the officers from the one-star list is highly unusual, said the current and former defense officials. That’s not “my narrative.” That’s “The New York Times” saying that Hegseth broke Pentagon rules to remove highly qualified Blacks and women.
The Wall Street Journal was even more direct in pointing out that Hegseth probably violated the law.
“The Pentagon argues that civilian leaders are granted the authority to choose which admirals or generals advise them on military matters. But some former and current officials have privately questioned whether Hegseth is violating the law.
“Under U.S. code, only the president can remove the name of an officer recommended for promotion. The Pentagon chief can recommend that names be removed for cause, but by law such a recommendation must be submitted to the president in writing. It isn’t clear whether Hegseth has followed that process.
“Hegseth has also delayed the appointment of at least two dozen one-star Air Force officers to the two-star grade, while the Pentagon reviews their ties to diversity, equity and inclusion policies, the people said. The officers were chosen by two separate promotion boards, which met in 2024 and 2025. ”
So Hegseth knows more than the admirals and generals who reviewed the qualifications of the candidates.
Personally, I find Hegseth to be a repellent, arrogant war-lover. He enjoys killing people. You can have him.

The best argument for DEI is that people like “Mel Shaw” are 100% positive that Pete Hegseth is HIGHLY qualified for his job and ONLY got it because of merit and his clear superiority over every other possible candidate in this country.
Because “Mel Shaw” believes in the extremely high merit of Pete Hegseth, “Mel Shaw” has absolute trust that highly qualified Pete Hegseth’s opinion on who and who is not qualified to be promoted in the military should never be questioned.
Merit is back in the White House! The decisions of Trump and his eminently meritorious choices are why inflation is sky high, Americans are struggling, and 61% of Americans – including many Republicans – are not happy with how Trump and his band of “highly qualified” staff are running the US into the ground. But very rich people are getting even richer, and that – to the deluded Mel Shaws of this world – is proof of “merit”.
It is people like “Mel Shaw” who paid Trump tens of thousands of dollars to enroll in Trump University. Trump convinced the “Mel Shaws” that they were getting great value for giving him their life savings. There are still some who got conned and who are too embarrassed to admit it, so they insist they got great value for bankrupting their families to attend Trump U.

It is hilarious that anyone would imagine that Hegseth heads our military because of his merit. Rolling on the floor laughing at that one. Just think of the parsecs of difference between, say, a James Mattis and this guy.

Hegseth lacks the qualifications of any of his predecessors, all of whom were generals.

Offhand, I can’t think of any Cabinet Secretary selected by Trump who is qualified for their position. His latest choice, Bill Pulte for Director of National Intelligence, is totally and dangerously unqualified. He comes from the construction industry and has zero experience. The law establishing the post says that the DNI must be experienced in the field. Pulte is a Trump sycophant, who has been digging into mortgage records to help Trump wreak vengeance on his political enemies.

Mel Shaw just makes statements without offering any support whatsoever. Besides, he tries to change the subject from Hegseth and the current administration to the previous administration. Typical Fox News’ way of “communication” which neither deserves nor desires response.

Typical member of the Trump cult. Don’t confuse them with facts.
I was on Twitter today, responding to the cult that was attacking Talarico and defending Paxton. Ignoring the fact that Paxton was indicted by the Republican-controlled Hiuse of the legislature after eight of Paxton’s staff came forward to provide evidence of Paxton’s corruption.
On the subject of 9/11, the cult can’t agree whether the day was “staged” by the FBI or whether the insurrectionists are heroic patriots. They don’t remember that Trump was President on January 6, 2021, and controlled the FBI. If the insurrectionists were part of the Deep State, as some in the cult insist, why were they convicted and sent to prison? And why does Trump want to pay them for their suffering?
Reason and fact are irrelevant to Trump’s defenders.
