The Trump administration used a threat to try to cow leading universities to abandon their independence. The administration called their offer a “Compact,” but in reality it was an offer of protection money. The old way of the Mafia: “Pay us and we will make sure no one breaks your windows or vandalizes your store.”
Vimal Patel of The New York Times reported:
M.I.T. became the first university to reject an agreement that would trade support for the Trump administration’s higher education agenda in exchange for favorable treatment.
The proposal, called the “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education,” was sent to nine universities and would require colleges to cap international student enrollment, freeze tuition for five years, adhere to definitions of gender and prohibit anything that would “belittle” conservative ideas.
In a letter on Friday to the Trump administration, M.I.T.’s president, Sally Kornbluth, wrote that the university has already freely met or exceeded many of the standards outlined in the proposal, but that she disagrees with other requirements it demands, including those that would restrict free expression.
“Fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone,” Dr. Kornbluth wrote.
A White House spokeswoman, Liz Huston, said in a statement that “any university that refuses this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform higher education isn’t serving its students or their parents — they’re bowing to radical, left-wing bureaucrats.”
“The best science can’t thrive in institutions that have abandoned merit, free inquiry, and the pursuit of truth,” she added. “President Trump encourages universities to join us in restoring academic excellence and common sense policies.”
The White House has said it wants responses from the universities by Oct. 20. The other eight colleges are the University of Arizona, Brown University, Dartmouth College, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas, Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia.
The compacts have been deeply unpopular among faculty members, who view them as yet another political intrusion into the affairs of academia. They argue that the Trump administration is threatening the independence of American higher education by cutting hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding to force top universities to adopt its agenda.

It’s very revealing that White House spokeswoman, Liz Huston, says that Trump’s “compact” for universities is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”.
We need to remember that during his campaign, Trump promised — promised — his MAGA minions that if he were elected “you won’t ever have to vote again.”
Trump fully intends to keep that promise.
The actual mission of Trump’s ICE army is to be so brutal and unreasonable that its actions trigger physical confrontations. ICE is being vastly expanded to a nationwide federal police force that will trigger confrontations in cities across our nation, giving Trump the basis for declaring Martial Law and suspending elections. The U.S. Supreme Court majority will give its blessing to this.
The innate passion of We the People to defend against ICE will be our undoing, because physical violence will certainly erupt spontaneously from persons acting to defend the helpless and oppressed.
Bottom Line: There won’t be any 2026 midterm elections; and by 2028 the Trump-controlled Congress will have set the stage legislatively in conjunction with gerrymandering of state elections for Trump to remain in power as long as he lives and eventually pass along the reins of rule to his designee. And the Supreme Court will have reinterpreted the 22nd Amendment to allow for Trump’s continued reign.
As Trump promised to his MAGA minions — they will never have to vote again.
None of us will.

Thanks for an interesting article. I was especially interested in the use of the self-identification of professors as “liberal “ to suggest that opposing views are hard to find on college campuses.
I wonder what might be the definition of that word. It has had many definitions over the years. Modern reactionary conservatism has attempted to turn it into a pejorative, but it persists to define a person as more open-minded than settled in thinking. Most professors think of themselves this way, and I would tend to agree with them. They read and study as a profession, which tends to open the mind rather than close it. Education is fundamentally the process of opening the mind.

That is an interesting collection of universities. I would assume the selection to be entirely political, based on the personal relationships to members of the Miller/Vought cabal that has taken control of the federal government. Rest assured that justification of the selection will sound like that Nazi slogan about work over the gate of the death camp. Even the devil can quote scripture…

The sign at the gates of all concentration camps said “Arbeit Macht Frei,” which means “Work Makes Freedom.”
Great analogy to a terrible lie! No doubt, that horrible hoax was used to convince millions of tortured, starving people that if they just tried to stay alive and did all their assigned work, then eventually they’d be set free.
That tactic ultimately contributed to the Nazi war effort, but it works best on imprisoned populations, not already free people who still have choices. (All universities today should try to be like MIT and realize this!)

A friend of mine is an MIT grad. He received a letter from Ms Kornbluth, stating the school’s stance and reason for refusal.
There was quite a bit more in that mailing than the short (and effective) quote that’s being circulated in the mainstream news. I hope it’s eventually released. Very intelligent response which refers to wider implications of this sort of acquiescence.

gitapik: If you know of a site online where “quite a bit more in that mailing than the short (and effective) quote that’s being circulated in the mainstream news,” can be found, either now or in the future, could you please share it with us here? TIA!

Will do. I figure if it’s not public, then there’s probably a reason.
