Same resolution just passed the House. I’m pleased to say that 58 Dems found spines, but 95 Dems voted for it and 60 either voted present or didn’t vote at all. Remind me again how much Dems care about Blacks, women, LGBTQ people, immigrants, Muslims…..
Kirk, “is not an icon”. Really? Maybe you should check out the tens of millions of his followers in the United States and literally throughout the world. He is indeed an icon even though the left hates him. The limousine liberals who live in blue cites should go for a ride through middle America and see how half the country loved Kirk, and who are proud to fly the American flag. The United States is a lot more than Hollywood and NYC. I know this because I travel all across the country in my motor home. Although I did not vote for Trump or Harris, the Trump win was a referendum on the culture war in our country. Folks were getting tired of hearing all the I Hate America nonsense and criticism of center/right of center followers. Lastly, although I am a political moderate, the majority of angry, miserable, and bitter people I meet seem to be left wing liberals. They look at the world through a window of constant negativity, while most of the moderates/right wing folks I meet seem to be quite content with their lives, regardless of their race or socioeconomic background. In other words, most right center/right wing folks look at the world with a positive or neutral view. Sure, there are injustices. However, there will always be injustices but it is not the sole focus of their day to day lives.
Why do you leave anonymous comments? Why don’t you post your own name, as I do?
I allow anonymous comments because so many come from teachers and others who are afraid they will be fired for their honest views. What’s your excuse?
I deplore political violence. I feel very sad for Charlie’s family. I deeply sincerely regret that he was murdered. I repeat ad infinitum that I truly and sincerely deplore his assassination.
But it is frightening that millions of people consider him an icon. He was a bigot; a racist; an anti-Semite; homophobic; anti/Muslim. He expressed his bigotry in a charming, warm voice. But the fact remains that he encouraged hatred and division.
Just because there are a lot of right wing bigots celebrating a fellow right wing bigot does not make that bigot a national icon. It just means that the U.S. has a big problem with right wing bigots.
John Q. Public said: “….how half the country loved Kirk….” I’d say half the country was either not even aware of Kirk or vaguely aware of him. But after his assassination his story has been in the news because Trump has made a huge deal out of his killing and anyone who dares utter three syllables against Kirk is threatened, fired, vilified, harassed and harangued 24/7. Kirk does not deserve to be treated like a slain president, pope or saint. He peddled vicious ideologies of racism, misogyny and intolerance against LGBTQ people.
John Q. is a third rate McCarthyite hate monger who hides behind a false phony patriotism, otherwise known as jingoism and chauvinism.
A real patriot loves his country and faces up to the past dark history of his country and celebrates the good parts of our history.
The right wing Trumpers want to erase history and believe in lies and misinformation.
Well said!
I agree 100!
Why should we canonize a very charming man who was outspoken in his bigotry? He was a champion of racism, patriarchy, homophobia, Islamophobia. He ridiculed anyone who was not a white straight Christian male.
His assassination was horrible. No one on this blog has said otherwise. But we should not ignore what he stood for.
Thank you, Joe Jersey, and everyone else who pointed out the ridiculous flaws in the fawning John Q. Public’s worship/comment about Charlie Kirk’s popularity.
I had barely heard of him, but my definitely not “limousine liberal” kid had. And long before his murder, my kid had been disgusted with the ideas that Charlie Kirk was promoting that John Q. Public apparently believes are now wildly popular. Taylor Swift should submit to her husband? Justice Jackson and Michelle Obama lack brain processing ability? President Biden did something so criminal he deserved to be executed? And that’s not even a tiny percentage of the truly repellent statements he made that the so-called liberal media has deemed no longer newsworthy.
Just because John Q. Public approves of Charlie Kirk saying those ugly things does not mean that all young people do or that Charlie Kirk is wildly popular. He was both popular and unpopular, depending on the group of young people and whether they like hearing those nasty attacks directed toward people they hate.
Diane, apologies for the hijack, but I saw a bunch of flyers posted at the Brooklyn Heights branch of the Brooklyn Public Library to let patrons know you and Leonie would be appearing there live in October! Yay!
Mike Johnson: Logic and reading comprehension are obviously not your strong points. Please feel free to troll at another location in a different universe, ciao per sempre.
How nice to hear from an opponent of public education. Now that your side has been running things for so long, any deficiencies within public education can be laid solidly at the feet of people like you.
And Trump appeals to geniuses? The guy who thought that stealth airplanes were actually invisible, that countries pay the tariffs place on them, that we should nuke hurricanes and sweep forests, that we should send astronauts to the sun, that Alabama is on the east coast, that India doesn’t share a border with China, that Article II of the Constitution says that a president can do anything he wants, that Denmark would want to sell Greenland to us, that doctors should look into injecting people with disinfectant to treat Covid, that Jeffrey Epstein was “a great guy” who “likes them kinda young,” that the Declaration of Independence is “a document about love and respect”? That utter braindead freaking moron? The guy who is guffawed at when he speaks to the United Nations? That buffoon?
Was anyone else here shocked (& happily so) that Sen. Ted Cruz compared FCC Chair Brendan Carr “to a mob boss?” Not a TC fan, but he went on to mock Carr (in a mobster’s voice–thought it was a pretty good imitation!). It’s all over the net (see it on YouTube, etc.) or if someone here can post the link, great. Imagine…Ted Cruz speaking out…hoping this sets a precedent.
& have to agree w/dienne77 RE: disgraceful Dem votes for Charlie Kirk Day. Also, if someone can post a link as to which Dems voted for & present. If any were mine (IL), I’ll be sure to vote nay in their next primary. Ugh & TIA.
I know I’m certainly looking forward to celebrating Charlie Kirk Day next month, brought to us unanimously by the Senate.

Even Sarah MacBride, the only transgender member of Congress, voted for it. It’s a crazy world. I would have voted nay.
I’m sorry Kirk was killed, but he’s not a national icon.

Diane Ravitch and groupies actually regard Colbert as a brilliant thinker. Yet another reason why public education is so mediocre.

So you think Colbert should be fired because he’s not as smart as you?
He’s been a huge financial success.
Can you match him?

So you evaluate people’s intelligence by how much wealth they have? OK: Elon Musk is way smarter than you are.

Colbert has been financially successful because he is very funny.
He has the top -rated late night show.
Except for Trumpers, the public loves him.
