James Ryan, the president of the University of Virginia since 2018, announced his resignation under intense pressure from the Trump administration.
The Civil Rights Division of the Trump administration pressured the Board of Governors of the university to remove Ryan because of his support for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
They said that he pretended to comply with the federal demands to eliminate DEI but merely renamed them.
For the past half century, DEI was considered a hallmark of compliance with civil rights laws. DEI programs encouraged women and nonehites to enroll in higher education and to study the history of discrimination.
Under Trump, DEI has been reinterpreted to mean favoring those groups at the expense of white men and thus discriminating against white men.
The Trump administration has cut federal grants to universities that are slow or unwilling to dismantle DEI programs.
The New York Times reported that lawyers for the Civil Rights Division demanded Ryan’s ouster.
The demand to remove Mr. Ryan was made over the past month on several occasions by Gregory Brown, the deputy assistant attorney general for civil rights, to university officials and representatives, according to the three people briefed on the matter.
Mr. Brown, a University of Virginia graduate who, as a private lawyer, sued the school, is taking a major role in the investigation. He told a university representative as recently as this past week that Mr. Ryan needed to go in order for the process of resolving the investigation to begin, two of the people said.
Harmeet K. Dhillon, the Justice Department’s top civil rights lawyer, has also been involved in negotiations with the university. She received her law degree from the University of Virginia, where she was a student in the law school at the same time as Mr. Ryan…
Mr. Ryan, hired in 2018 as the university’s ninth president, has leaned into issues like making the school more diverse, increasing the number of first-generation students and encouraging students to do community service. But his approach, which he says will make the university “both great and good,” has rankled conservative alumni and Republican board members who accuse him of wanting to impose his values on students and claim he is “too woke.”
Before becoming the University of Virginia’s president, Mr. Ryan served as the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he was praised for his commitment to D.E.I. programs. Harvard has been one of the Trump administration’s chief targets since it began its assault on higher education.
The administration’s attempt to assert federal influence over state university leadership decisions is also illustrative of how Mr. Trump’s political appointees continue to wield the Justice Department’s investigative powers to achieve policy goals long sought by a top Trump adviser, Stephen Miller.
Legal experts said they could think of few other instances in which an administration had demanded that a school have its president removed in order to resolve a Justice Department investigation.
“This is a tactic you would expect the government to use when it’s playing hard ball in a criminal case involving a corporation accused of serious wrongdoing or pervasive criminal activity,” said Daniel C. Richman, who is a law professor at Columbia University and a former federal prosecutor.

When is this going to stop? When will leaders with agency stand up against the illegal use of the Department of Justice? This ongoing appeasement of institutions that have legal rights against the actions of the Trump administration will make any thoughts of democracy moot. Yes, resistance will cost money, but compared to the long term costs to our society and intellectual progress isn’t it worth it? So what if Trump writes a worthless Executive Order declaring the revocation of funding of any kind? These are grants agreed to legally. They are contracts with signatures. One side can’t simply decide to pull out of the deal.
This DEI garbage should be challenged with a full throat. Any individual or organization with any sense should be shouting from the mountaintop that diversity is a good thing and we are embracing it.
It was proven this week that the Supreme Court is fully in Trump’s court. The Congress will soon pass a bill that will devastate millions of Americans. The establishment Democratic Party is more concerned about keeping donors happy than listening to Americans in New York and everywhere else.
The University of Virginia is among the best of our public institutions. I have watched MAGA disciples slowly dismantle the reputation of the University of North Carolina. What DeSantis is doing to his universities is a crime. Why does a private university like Columbia even give a damn about what Trump thinks?
There remain thousands of institutions of higher learning out there. 200 signed a letter rejecting Trump’s assault on education. Why aren’t they forming organizations that are loudly rejecting this invasion of the stupid?
Over five million just marched. Don’t progressive leaders know we have their back? This isn’t about “left” or “right”, it’s about truth!

Paul,
I agree with you.
But don’t forget that the administration is using all forms of federal aid as a weapon.
Research grants, student aid, and lots of other programs. Columbia folded for $400 million, complied and has still not gotten the $400 million.
Harvard has the resources to resist and it has, in court. Trump has cut off $2 billion plus for medical research and tried to revoke the visas of all foreign students, as well as withdraw Harvard’s accreditation.
It’s all outrageous.

So what would you like the party out of power to do other than stand on the soap box . Is there anything Republicans have put in committee that would require a 60 vote threshold ? When the party who is inherently against Government is in power making Government that can regulate and tax ineffectual is their only goal. Should democrats block a debt extension next time? How you think that will end?… The great part about much of the Democratic base is everyone wants bold actions till a candidate wins a primary proposing to take that bold action against the Donor Class. Then the wagons circle to defeat that party’s nominee .

A little history has to be added to your demands.
Obama and Biden both had legislative agendas that could be obstructed in the Senate . Yes, so bad was the obstruction that Reid eliminated the super majority for Presidential appointments except for SCOTUS.
Of course in 2016 when Scalia died and Garland did not get an appointment for 11 months . Democrats were in the minority and had no power to force Republicans to move the nomination forward.
In 2017 Democrats were powerless again as Republicans eliminated the Super Majority for SCOTUS…
In Trumps first term most legislation that failed did so because there was not enough Republican support. Democrats had regained the House in 19 and 20. Yet it was Trump by refusing a funding bill ,who shut down Government not the Congress. On 12/22 /18 with Republicans in control. The Federal Government shut down.
In Trumps four years what legislation did he pass that required a Senate Super Majority? I have a poor memory refresh it ..
In order to obstruct an opposition President you have to have control of at least one house in congress. There is not a doubt in my mind that before this term is up the Republicans will eliminate the filibusterer rule if they ever need to pass a bill that requires a super majority to bring to the Senate floor . What serious bill would that be? . Yes Democrats should have done that on Jan 7 2021. With a 50-50 Senate ,how could they do so with Manchin and Sinema blocking the agenda. There are 19 Red States whose total Population is less than than NY and California. 38 votes in the Senate to 4. That relic of slavery difficult to overcome !
Which leaves us the Soap box and I agree they are deficient. In all the areas you mentioned.

As a UVA alum, I am heartsick. I realize that the president of UVA sacrificed himself for the good of the school. When will our leaders in congress stand up to this dictator? No Kings!!
