Julian Vasquez Heilig is a scholar of equity. Until recently, he was provost at Western Michigan Hniversity. He stepped back to his role as a scholar, and he now speaks his mind freely and forcefully.
He wrote on his blog “Cloaking Inequity” about the choice facing the leaders of higher education: either stand up for academic freedom or hide in fear. His post is about “The White Flag of Cowardice.”

But are students being trained to be winning contestants on a game show? CBK

Glad he noted Michael Roth, who has been one of the most cogent and responsible university presidents in this country. It isn’t just Roth’s excellent defense of universities now — it’s what he has been doing for a long time, back when the far right was citing one of their previous bogeymen – CRT, BLM, “college students supporting evil Muslim terrorists” – and having people who identified as Democrats helping the far right do their dirty work by giving legitimacy to wildly inaccurate propaganda about how “dangerous” this is and priming the pump for their takeover now. Roth is very good at defending universities using a truthful framing of the issues instead of doing what the liberal media does intentionally (and what too many Democrats do unwittingly) and dutifully obeying the right wing rule that the only permissible debate is a debate that begins by giving legitimacy to the false framing of the far right.
My guess is that the NYT reporters are already eagerly following
“tips” from their right wing Republican sources that Roth is guilty of plagiarism or some “thought crime” that is only a “very concerning issue worthy of hundreds of news stories” when the right wing needs the so-called liberal media to completely destroy someone who is dangerous to their neo-fascist takeover because that person speaks the truth and/or is not helping them censor the speech of anyone who criticizing them.
