Ellen Nakashima wrote in the Washington Post about the Russian propaganda campaign to advance its interests in the U.S. Its goals are to weaken the U.S. by promoting discord, to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, and to elect Trump. Some of its propaganda is meant to make Americans mad at their own government, by focusing on real problems, like inflation and the border.
Nakashima writes:
The Russian government’s covert efforts to sway the 2024 presidential election are more advanced than in recent years, and the most active foreign threat this political season, U.S. intelligence officials said Friday.
Russia’s activities “are more sophisticated than in prior election cycles,” said a senior official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) in a briefing with reporters, noting the use of “authentic U.S. voices” to “launder” Russian government propaganda and spread socially divisive narratives through major social media, as well as on sham websites that pose as legitimate American media organizations.
Moscow is targeting U.S. swing states in particular, the official said, and using artificial intelligence to more quickly and convincingly create fake content to shape the outcome in favor of former president Donald Trump.
That is “consistent with Moscow’s broader foreign policy goals of weakening the United States and undermining Washington’s support for Ukraine,” the ODNI official said, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the agency….
This week, the U.S. government announced a sweeping set of actions to counter Russian influence campaigns, including an indictment of two Russian employees of the state-run news site RT for allegedly paying an American media company to spread English-language videos on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and X.
Prosecutors also seized 32 Russian-controlled internet domains that were used in a state-led influence effort called “Doppelganger” to undermine international support for Ukraine. In addition, the Treasury and State departments announced sanctions on Russian individuals and entities that are accused of disseminating propaganda.
RT has cultivated networks to disseminate narratives friendly to Moscow, while trying to mask the content as authentic Americans’ free speech, ODNI said in an election security update Friday.
Two things place “Russia at the top of the list” of foreign governments seeking to influence the election, the ODNI official said. “They’re fairly robust and quite practiced at doing this type of activity. Also the scope and the scale of their activities are quite significant.”
“Russia is working up- and down-ballot races,” the official said. They are using artificial intelligence “to more quickly and convincingly create synthetic content” and influence-for-hire firms that leverage marketing, public relations and other expertise to complicate attribution.
“Americans are more likely to believe other Americans’ views compared to content with clear signs of foreign propaganda,” the official said. “So what we see them doing is relying on witting and unwitting Americans to seed, promote and add credibility to narratives that serve these foreign actors’ interests.”

Thanks for all these posts this morning, Diane, because these foreign influence cases are serious and very interesting.
Something similar that may gotten less attention was the recent indictment against an aide to Kathy Hochul and Andrew Cuomo. This is a case of foreign influence not on media, but on government.

Thanks, FLERP. That’s a horrifying story. I sometimes have to remind myself that I can’t post every newsworthy thing that’s happening.
Last night, I read that Putin had banned YouTube in Russia, which was very popular because he wants to control all information that Russians can read or see. I didn’t post it.

This is an interesting story.
But the headline is even more intriguing — she took “Money, Travel and POULTRY”??!!
Is she the first foreign agent to be bribed by “poultry”?

You have to be kidding. Putin didn’t endorse Kamala. I challenge you to provide the reasons that Putin gave for this so-called “endorsement” because he practically laughed as he said it. But Putin did also say he was bombing Ukraine families to protect them from Nazis in Ukraine so far right fascist trolls, or really gullible non-trolls would post on this blog that they were glad lots of Ukraine families were being bombed so Putin could fight Nazis. I think you were one of them, although using a different troll name. But if you are just one of Putin’s useful idiots, you should certainly make it clear that you believe Putin, whether he says he is fighting Nazis (wink, sink) or endorsing Kamala (wink, wink) who he hates.
Trolls and useful idiots like Trump because they love Putin and Netanyahu and both of them hate Democrats and love Trump.

I read the same news about Putin endorsing Kamala.
Why wouldn’t Putin endorse Kamala while secretly working behind the curtain to get Traitor Trump elected?
Putin publicly endorsing Kamala and not traitor Trump is another sneaky method to fool easily fooled voters. There are plenty of undecided dumb voters who never fact check that may decide to vote for Trump because they also heard that propoganda designed to trick voters like them.

NYC: I think the point is that the method of discourse itself is corrupt to the core. It’s why I ghosted a relative (so-called) Christian–we haggled long before the Trump era, but then she took
Trump as her leader, so I finally cut all communications and had to beg to get them to take me off their e-mail list of brainless idiots. (Freedom has its price especially when breaking away from family is concerned.)
The point is that they will say ANYTHING to serve their ideology–in this case, their version of what God is about and wants. Under that method, it’s even okay to endorse hypocrisy and Trumpism because it’s about God and what God wants. The new lockbox for the GOP is the MAGA mind.
Finally, when she finally wrote and said she had taken me off their list, she revealed her totalitarian nature and acted really put-out–it irked her that she couldn’t control me . . . like the guy who beats his wife and then complains about her controlling him–because they won’t let him beat her–and so the law and its judges are biased against him!
Under those circumstances, discourse which commonly has truth at its center is dead. CBK

Putin would never support anyone who is committed to the survival of Ukraine, as Kamala is.
Putin fits in with the Trump-Narjirie Taylor Greene-Matt Gaetz group that withheld Ukrainian said for months.

This story rose at the same time a friend posted a long diatribe pointing out the way the “deep state” is manipulating news to the detriment of Trump. No doubt the ardent Trump supporters see the activity of the Justice Department as evidence of a conspiracy to discredit Trump, who is seen as a quasi-religious figure.

Roy, you live in Tennessee. I live in liberal Brooklyn. I don’t have any evangelicals in my circle of friends.
Have can they see Trump as a quasi-religious figure when he has no religious affiliation, when he courts the evangelicals only for their votes? I have always wondered how many abortions he paid for.

NO COINCIDENCE
It is no coincidence that the rise of “social media” coincides with the rise of attacks on democracy in America and around the world:
Communist and fascist dictators around the world immediately recognized that America’s naive Congress had given “social media” a get-out-of-jail-free card when Congress passed Section 230 — so the enemies of democracy immediately began flooding social media with pages and fake “news” that undermine democracy. Musk is taking advantage of Section 230.
The result is that today throughout America and throughout every other democratic republic in the world there are many millions of people who believe the lies that their democracy has failed.
And the communist and fascist attacks continue even now more intently than ever because Section 230 allows them to.
There’s no need to pass laws regulating free speech — the only thing needed to restore truth is to remove Section 230 that gives social media companies their get-out-of-jail-free pass even when the most outrageous lies are posted.
Removing Section 230’s free pass to allow lies simply makes social media companies responsible for determining the truth of what is posted on their pages and allows citizens to sue them if they allow lies to be posted.
Get rid of Section 230 and the world of social media changes for the better.
