Ruby Bridges was chosen as the first child to integrate a public school in New Orleans. Six years old, she walked to school surrounded by federal marshals. After Norman Rockwell illustrated the photo, it became an iconic image as “The Problem We All Live With.”
Ruby Bridges was interviewed by Stephen Colbert, and it was a moving interview. He asked her if she was afraid when she saw the crowds of screaming white parents outside the school. She said, “No, I thought it was a Mardi Gras event.” When she entered the school, the crowd rushed in and withdrew their children, leaving her the only student in the school.
It’s a wonderful short interview, and she is a very impressive woman.

That is a very good interview. That is why we have school vouchers…so the rich can have help maintaining a separation from the races, ethnic groups and the poor. Walter “Sandy” Silvers

She was never the only student at her school. While many parents did withdraw their kids, not all did. She was, however, the only student in her class for most of the year.

In the interview, she said she was the only student in the school. But maybe you are right and she is wrong.

She says so herself in her own book.

You may be right but watch the interview. She says that all the white children were withdrawn on the day she enrolled.

Imagine having a dozen teachers and only one student.

Watch the interview. Ruby had one teacher all year. Ruby loved her. I don’t know where the others went.

Ruby and I are the same age. I started first grade when she did. I already loved school because I had been a kindergartner. I remember watching coverage of Ruby on television and being so confused that any grownup would be opposed to any child going to school to learn to read.
I’m still confused.

If Ruby Bridges had college age siblings, they would have been denied admission to Houston’s private university, Rice. The school was Whites only (an edict by its benefactor) until 1967.
Rice was one of the first schools to settle a 2022 lawsuit that alleged 16 colleges formed a cartel that limited financial aid (benefits accruing to the wealthy students). Colleges have settled for a combined, to date, $104.5 mil. It appears that Georgetown and Notre Dame haven’t settled.
It would be a good thing for the case to go to court for a definitive answer.

Ruby Bridges was on Stephen Colbert. Stephen Colbert, pronounced as if French, was originally on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I’m in segue heaven! Have you heard? Jon Stewart will return to host the Daily Show on Mondays until the election. Huge! Millions of voters will hear him cut through the CNN, et al. MALARKEY about President Biden’s age and mental acuity to instead focus on his policies, like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Stewart will eviscerate Agent Orange. His podcasts have been incisive and widely watched (not as widely as Comedy Central, but millions of viewers) since he left The Daily Show in 2015, but Apple just canceled him. They couldn’t take the heat. Now he has a bigger audience again. Today is an uplifting day!
