Many of us in this election season have referred to the Trump ‘anshluss’ as a world of ‘smoke and mirrors’, and we were correct. But now we know from the twisted mouth of his hired gun, KellyAnne Conway, that it is really not so much calculated duplicity, but rather it is a presentation of “alternative facts.” She says we must look at the news as “BROADcast, not NARROWcast.” A whole new political vocabulary has emerged from the Trumpists in our new ‘post factual’ world. Veracity is now in the eyes and ears of the beholder.
As a student, and then a professor, of public policy, I learned early on that a fact was considered true when, as a thesis, it was proven by non biased investigation. However, we have changed course in epistemology and linguistics to find that we now live in a world where there is a sliding scale of what registers as fact and what is fiction, and either or both can come out in every sentence of the limited vocabulary spouting from Donald Trump’s mouth.
As I listened carefully, admittedly with tears in my eyes, to the inauguration speech of this deplorable new President of the US, and leader of the Free World, who was standing only feet from four of our past Presidents as he defamed each of them with his rhetoric about how he finally, for the first time, is giving the nation back to the people, I was amazed at his bizarre gall, his ignorance, and his despicable manners to insult Obama, Bush, Clinton, and Carter, by asserting that they were all inept, uncaring, and failing in their duty to America. He vilified them in so many ways that it was mind blowing, and watching their faces, the faces of their wives, and the others on the dais, I came to finally understand what a villainous demagogue this new President is, and how dangerous he is, and what is even worse, how dangerous and uninformed his followers are.
I have read much in these past weeks since he won this questionable election by a fluke of the Electoral College, but without the popular vote, and with the interference of both Russian hacking and Comey’s false Clinton report and the NY Times knowing about it all for weeks before the election but choosing not to report any of it. Much has been written by groups of psychiatrists who go beyond his personality disorders like Narcissism and megalomania, to discuss his potential brain dysfunction and the possibility of dementia which rules his lies and loss of control as with the endless tweets at the smallest and the most inconsequential of slights. Yesterday, sending his lackey, now known as Afghanistan Sean Spicer, in to the first formal White House press announcement only to admonish the media for “fake” reporting on how many people were standing to watch this nonsensical reality show of an inauguration was incomprehensible and will be recorded in the history books for posterity. This man continues to make himself, and America, the laughing stock of the planet.
Facts on the emerging Russian connection now being investigated by the CIA and the FBI, not only with the Putin hacking of the US election process, but with the years of contact and ‘deals’ between Trump and Putin and Manafort, and the Russian Oligarchs who now seem to be bankers to Trump, and all of them also possible black mailers of Trump, and purveyors of films of “golden showers” which is a topic most never heard of before this election, all of this boggles the mind of voters and citizens of the US and is even more terrifying to the other nations of the world which have to deal with his nuclear threats and the angst of being his target if he gets insulted. I suspect his family knows how deranged he is and that is why they have Jared Kushner, who is evidently the smartest among them, posted in the West Wing as his closest advisor. Jared strikes me as playing Iago to his father-in-laws madman, Othello.
Not only do we Americans have to worry about his little fingers on the button of the cataclysmic nuclear coded football, but the world now wonders who he will blow up first.
Democrats are asked by Republicans to foster unity and support him…to give him a chance, yet everything he says brings us back to his lack of intellectual stature, lack of political experience, lack of calm judgment, and his over arching greed, mendacity, and self aggrandizement. It is not rational to support anything or anyone he recommends for his edicts do mirror the manipulating and false populist claims of tyrants from Nero to Hitler. His speeches about giving the decision making “to the people” are almost word for word the speeches of the Third Reich and they are a page out of his favorite bedside book, Mein Kampf. The Drumpf family has long been known known to consort with others of the underworld like Roy Cohn, and their Mafia ties, and most probably the similar Russian mob. Why would anyone think that due to this ‘trumped up’ election, Donald has changed from his lifelong playboy, misogynistic, self serving, highly bigoted persona?
Just look carefully at those he has chosen to run OUR country with him as their leader, their Commander in Chief. Keep wearing the pussy cat hats and speaking up without fear. Keep Rex Tillerson at Exxon Mobil instead of in the role of the US Sect. of State where he will be dropping US sanctions (to insure vast profits for the oil barons) against an aggressive Putin Kremlin which is committing war crimes, and keep the ignorant and spoiled, religious ideologue debutante, Betsy DeVos, out of the Dept. of Education, and keep the well determined bigot, Jeff Sessions, from being America’s AG … and send all the rest of this crew of US oligarchs back to their well padded nests under the rocks from which they crawled into Drumpf’s daylight including HUD, Labor, Health and Human Services et al. What a bunch of over privileged thugs they all are.
What can you do about it? For one thing,  join the over 100,000 people that have signed the ‘Impeach Donald Trump Now’ petition and get your voice on record.

Ignoring protests by environmentalists and Native American activists, Trump signed executive orders approving two controversial pipelines. The Keystone pipeline was opposed by environmental activists and rejected by the Obama administration in 2015. The Dakota Access pipeline was fought by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe because it cuts through their ancestral lands and endangers their water supply. The Obama administration halted work on the Dakota pipeline only recently. Trump approved both pipelines to create jobs and please the fossil fuel industry.

Before we go any further, let me remind you that “The Onion” is satire. But these days, satire seems to make more sense than the news, since we now know there are””alternate realities” and facts are a matter of opinion.

In this post, Kellyanne Conway apologizes for the lies she tells daily. She says she is just trying to save her father from a curse that was placed in him many years ago.

“Listen, I completely understand why everyone is furious with me. You don’t think that I know there are disgusting, reprehensible, dangerous things coming out of my mouth at all times? That my vile, indefensible words seek only to shelter the nation’s newly installed administration from the slightest shred of accountability? And that I’ve done it all with a self-righteous arrogance that suggests outright contempt for the truth and our nation’s founding principles? Of course I do. I have behaved in ways that defy not only logic and common sense, but also basic human decency. And, deservedly, I have been shamed and criticized and insulted for these actions.

“But answer me truthfully: Who among you wouldn’t do the same exact thing if an evil 400-year-old witch had trapped your father’s eternal soul inside a cursed iron lantern, flickering faintly each time his agonized moans escaped the murky, otherworldly ether that is his prison?”

Hard to think anything could top her hugely embarrassing testimony to the Senate HELP committee!

Resist!

Let the fighting begin!

Peter Dreier, professor of politics at Occidental College in California, proposes the names of 20 Democrats who might be contenders in 2020.

Of the names he lists, there are some that I would never support unless they had a conversion experience and abandoned their ties to the privatization movement. The ones who come to mind at once as too cozy with the privatizers are Andrew Cuomo and Corey Booker. I would also want to know whether Julian Castro agrees with his brother, the mayor of San Antonio, who gave one-quarter of the seats in his city’s public schools to charter operators.

I expect that readers in Ohio will have a few choice words for Sherrod Brown, who has not said much about the rampant charter corruption in his state.

Feel free to chime in.

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he has received “many, many awards” for his environmental policies as a developer. He also claimed at one point to be an environmentalist.

The Washington Post investigated these claims and found them to be untrue. The newspaper awarded its not-coveted Four Pinocchios award to Trump. It is not clear whether he was lying or delusional. Whatever. He is not an environmentalist. He has not won many, many awards.

Kellyanne Conway may go down in American history for coining the term “alternative facts,” which apparently means that “facts” are whatever you think they are; that if someone says that 2+2=4, there are “alternative” ways to reach a different conclusion. For example, 2+2 might actually equally 3 or 7 or 41, depending on what the meaning of “facts” is. Some people believe that “alternative facts” is actually a synonym for falsehoods. Or, lies.

EduShyster  delved deeply into Michigan politics and discovered that Betsy DeVos, on track to become Trump’s Secretary of Education (another of Trump’s little jokes) has her own “alternative facts.”

DeVos has said that if confirmed, she will not give up her financial stake in a company called Neurocore, because–well, Trump didn’t release his tax returns and didn’t end his conflicts of interest, so why should she?

But apparently she believes in this company. EduShyster reviews its claims, which are amazing but then learns that this brain retraining is costly.

Now for the bad news: brain retraining doesn’t come cheap. Collecting qEEG data to identify neurological weakness, developing a personalized brain performance plan and restoring the brain to optimal functionality, all the while being monitored in a brain room will set you back $2200—which may or may not be covered by insurance. That’s bad news if you’ve got a stodgy insurer who insists on dated data metrics, like peer-reviewed studies (yawn). But wait—good news: Neurocore is now partnering with Prosper Healthcare Lending to assist clients with program financing. Also, be sure to ask a Neurocore team member about the Neurocore Scholarship Program.

Seeing green
As I read more about Neurocore, I felt the part of my brain that houses my recollections about Michigan education scandals light up. Had I not just encountered an expensive and, um, experimental miracle cure that claimed to make students smarter? Indeed, I had. I speak, of course, of Integrated Visual Learning, the brain-child of one Steve Ingersoll, the optometrist turnedMitten state edupreneur who was recently sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for tax evasion. While Neurocore is laser focused on the brain’s *neuroplasticity,* Integrated Visual Learning or IVL trained its sights on the gateway to the brain: the ocular orbs. Students at Ingersoll’s charter schools were hooked up to a machine to see if their eyes zigged and zagged across a page of text from the usual left to right. If not, expensive *therapy* was in order. Like Neurocore, IVL posted impressive results as self-reported on its website. At Ingersoll’s charter schools, Ritalin prescriptions were dropping and test scores were rising as throngs of students made the transition to *visual learning.*

Say what?
Imagine my surprise, then, when on my travels through Michigan last month, I found myself in the offices of a charter school lobbying org, listening to a lobbyist explain that Ingersoll’s schools were actually shining stars in Michigan’s charter landscape. My own eyes zigged and zagged in response. *But the guy just got sent to jail!* I responded. But as was patiently explained to me, I’d been looking at the matter upside down. Ingersoll’s sentencing was proof that the system works—*checks and balances*—while the fact that kids at the charter schools continued to excel even as the founder of the Excel Institute was being led away in handcuffs, well, that was what we should be talking about…

Scams, frauds, cons, coming to your state soon. And just think, the Secretary of Education will own a piece of the action and be able to promote it at the same time!

Anita Senkowski is a fearless investigative blogger in Michigan who is the scourge of charter frauds. Her blogs, for example, exposed fraud at a charter chain that involved the misappropriation of millions of dollars, and the fraudster is bound for prison.

In this post, she examines the evangelical Christian roots of Neurocore, the biofeedback company that Betsy DeVos likes so much that she refuses to sell her stock despite the obvious conflict of interest with her role as Secretary of Education. Decisions made by the Department could enrich the company and her stock portfolio. Not that she needs the money.

Under normal circumstances, if a nominee for the Cabinet refused to divest a conflict of interest, that would be the end of his or her nomination. But these are not normal circumstances. We have a president who never released his tax returns and refuses to separate himself from control of his business empire, which is rife with conflicts of interest. He hasn’t even given up the 60-year lease on the Trump Hotel in D.C., a block from the White House, even though the lease with the Government Services Administration explicitly says that no elected official may be a beneficiary of the lease. Trump seems to live by the saying, “Never apologize, never explain.”

Senkowski also points out that the head of the company received his “degrees” from a for-profit online “university.”

Her Facebook site has this motto: “So sue me already.” Apparently no one has, because she is still biting the frauds, cons, and scams in northern Michigan. It sounds like a full-time job!

Trump selected John Gore, a lawyer who has defended many Republican states that passed restrictions on voting rights as the new deputy assistant attorney general in charge of the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department.

Gore does boast some expertise in civil-rights litigation — specifically, he has considerable experience defending the Republican Party against allegations that its voting laws violate civil rights.

As BuzzFeed notes, Gore defended controversial redistricting plans pushed by Republicans in Florida, New York, and South Carolina in 2012.

He also defended Florida governor Rick Scott’s attempt to purge his state’s voting rolls of non-citizens, shortly before the 2012 election. A federal court later ruled that Scott’s measure had violated the National Voter Registration Act, as it purged many legal voters from the rolls, most of whom happened to belong to left-leaning constituencies.

Don’t expect vigorous enforcement of civil rights laws in the next four years. Don’t expect any enforcement of civil rights laws, and you won’t be disappointed.

Democrats on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee requested another opportunity to question Betsy DeVos about her financial conflicts of interest, but Republicans quickly rejected their request.

She may may enhance her family fortune by holding on to stocks in her portfolio that her actions will affect. Please don’t believe that billionaires don’t care about making more money. Some do, some don’t. DeVos’s refusal to eliminate all her education investments shows which kind of billionaire she is.

DeVos was so ill-informed at her only hearing that her remarks turned her into a national laughing stock. Republicans are protecting her by not giving Democrats another chance to allow her to embarrass herself.
