In an earlier post, I shared with you the fact that I took a bad fall, landed on my knee, and tore the ACL ligament. The MRI showed the damage was even more extensive than it first seemed. I not only tore my ACL, I managed to take out several other ligaments as well that provide stability. So much for enthusiasm and striving boldly into the challenges of life.
As a result, this is the new schedule: I am going to Louisville this week to accept the Grawemeyer award. I wouldn’t miss it, even if I have to use a walker and a wheelchair.
I am canceling all other speaking engagements for the balance of April and May. No Milwaukee. No Madison. No Towson University. No Honorary degree at Columbia College in Chicago.
I may be facing knee replacement surgery.
This much I promise you. I won’t stop blogging and tweeting unless I’m under anesthesia. I will not stop advocating for commonsense reforms, for respectful treatment of educators, for loving treatment of children, and the joy of learning until they pry my cold, dead fingers from my electronic devices.

Diane- I suspect that under anesthesia you will continue your crusade on behalf on public education by explaining to your surgical team what needs to happen to protect the cornerstone of our democracy! Best wishes for a smooth procedure and an uneventful recovery.

You are one tough lady.
And ice is your very best friend. If you haven’t already, find a tool that makes it easy for you even on the go.
Your insurance should get you a Game Ready ice machine for post-op recovery, but I also love this convenient neoprene sleeve with freezer gel packs. And I still use it anytime my knees hurt or are swollen.

Diane,
I love you.
Seriously.
I understand what you are going through. I’m a 30+ year elementary teacher, and I injured my left knee repeatedly over the past year. On March 21, I underwent what evolved into a massive reconstruction surgery.
I haven’t been back in the classroom yet, and I don’t anticipate getting back until sometime in May.
You will persevere. You are made of stern stock.
Be brave AND BE LOUD.
Friend,

If you didn’t know it already, I’m sure you will come to realize just how much so many of us appreciate your leadership by the well-wishes that will be sent to you. We will keep going as you recover and look forward to your return to regain your place in this important conversation. Speedy recovery!

While knee replacement surgery may seem daunting, even frightening, it’s quite manageable and well worth it. Do take the time to focus on recovery and physical therapy. If you need a great surgeon, I can personally recommend a nationally recognized physician in Cincinnati–very little serious pain following the procedure, and no problems seven years out. Wishing you the best.
