In an earlier post, I shared with you the fact that I took a bad fall, landed on my knee, and tore the ACL ligament. The MRI showed the damage was even more extensive than it first seemed. I not only tore my ACL, I managed to take out several other ligaments as well that provide stability. So much for enthusiasm and striving boldly into the challenges of life.
As a result, this is the new schedule: I am going to Louisville this week to accept the Grawemeyer award. I wouldn’t miss it, even if I have to use a walker and a wheelchair.
I am canceling all other speaking engagements for the balance of April and May. No Milwaukee. No Madison. No Towson University. No Honorary degree at Columbia College in Chicago.
I may be facing knee replacement surgery.
This much I promise you. I won’t stop blogging and tweeting unless I’m under anesthesia. I will not stop advocating for commonsense reforms, for respectful treatment of educators, for loving treatment of children, and the joy of learning until they pry my cold, dead fingers from my electronic devices.
Diane- I suspect that under anesthesia you will continue your crusade on behalf on public education by explaining to your surgical team what needs to happen to protect the cornerstone of our democracy! Best wishes for a smooth procedure and an uneventful recovery.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. 🙂
So sorry to hear about your injuries. Wishing you a rapid recovery. And taking this opportunity to thank you very much for helping us fight for our children. I pass along your information every day.
Get well soon and thank you for all the work you do.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Keep fighting the good fight. We need you!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to our indomitable champion of real reform! Hopefully you will get the operation in before Eva tries to co-locate one of her schools into the operating room!
Please take care of yourself first, so that we can continue to benefit from your wisdom,
Take care of yourself. Prayers. Date: Sun, 13 Apr 2014 23:09:28 +0000 To: nancyturnbo@hotmail.com
Love the last line take-off from the NRA. Go for the replacement. It is better sooner than later. I hope your award presentation will be linked to this site. Names of past honorees is graced by adding you to the list.
You are one tough lady.
And ice is your very best friend. If you haven’t already, find a tool that makes it easy for you even on the go.
Your insurance should get you a Game Ready ice machine for post-op recovery, but I also love this convenient neoprene sleeve with freezer gel packs. And I still use it anytime my knees hurt or are swollen.
Best wishes for you recovery!
Diane you are our valiant warrior… Take time to heal.
So sorry you are hurting and I hope you feel better soon. Just a corny question: I’ll be at the Grawemeyer award ceremony in Louisville on Wednesday and I wondered if you would mind signing my copy of your book? Thanks! Tina Salameh, Louisville, KY
So sorry about your misfortune. Take care of yourself, Diane. Sending healing thoughts.
So sorry to hear of yet another obstacle on your path although I know you’ll be up and bounding way too soon. What a tiger-woman you are! My hero.
Please take a well-deserved rest, have your knee taken care of and have a speedy recovery! Wishing you all the best and thanking you for everything you do to support and preserve public education and democracy in America.
My prayers for your speedy recovery. You have earned comfort for your constant inspiration to the public school teachers of America! Get rest and have chicken soup!
Many people have had excellent recoveries from knee surgery — may you be among them! Please take wonderful care of yourself, and accept help from others, so that the outcome will be the best.
You must recover swiftly… without you the voices of the teachers will be lost, and the was against public education will continue.
Ah – so very sorry Diane. You are in my prayers for a total and complete recovery. Love and hugs always.
Wishing you a full and speedy recovery! Thank you for all you do!
Feel better soon! You are my inspiration. … wishing you a speedy recovery.
Diane: your work is invaluable. Speedy recovery. Our children need you to be back at 100% as soon as possible. Thank you for everything you do.
Feel better, Diane. You inspire me!
Sending you healing thoughts!
Speedy recovery, Diane! I had knee replacement last year – hope you’re not heading down that road any time soon.
Praying for your healing. We NEED YOU as an advocate for sanity in PUBLIC EDUCATION. Take good care of yourself.
Diane,
I love you.
Seriously.
I understand what you are going through. I’m a 30+ year elementary teacher, and I injured my left knee repeatedly over the past year. On March 21, I underwent what evolved into a massive reconstruction surgery.
I haven’t been back in the classroom yet, and I don’t anticipate getting back until sometime in May.
You will persevere. You are made of stern stock.
Be brave AND BE LOUD.
Friend,
Thom Ryder in Roanoke, VA
You’re better on one leg than Gates, Duncan and Rhee on three.
Diane,
I hope you recover quickly. I am a CT school teacher and I rely on your blog to keep me current on all of the national happenings in the fight to keep public education public. If you didn’t know it already, I’m sure you will come to realize just how much so many of us appreciate your leadership by the well-wishes that will be sent to you. We will keep going as you recover and look forward to your return to regain your place in this important conversation. Speedy recovery!
Sending thoughts for a speedy and easy recovery! If you battle this like you battle for public ed, you got this!
Diane, thank you for all you do! Speedy recovery!
Take care of yourself. You are an inspiration!
Hope you have a good doctor – Chicago has some fabulous doctors with cutting edge ( pardon the pun) procedures. Midwest Orthopedics – The Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox use them –
You will be back in no time – funny how life changes on a dime – get well
I hope you recover quickly!
Hang in there and come back ready to fight. I hope everything goes well and the Doctors and Physical Therapists do what they do best – make you better and stronger 🙂
I wish you a complete & non-eventful recovery!
Praying for a speedy and complete recovery. Don’t skimp on the physical therapy, either!
Kindest regards to you, Diane. I wish you well during your recovery. Thank you for the inspiration and courage you continue to provide, especially when I begin to doubt myself or my abilities.
So sorry about your knee, Diane! I hope you can keep those fingers flexed on the keyboards during your recovery. God Bless!
Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery! Thank you for all you do for our children and teachers. Take care.
Thank you for all you do.
While knee replacement surgery may seem daunting, even frightening, it’s quite manageable and well worth it. Do take the time to focus on recovery and physical therapy. If you need a great surgeon, I can personally recommend a nationally recognized physician in Cincinnati–very little serious pain following the procedure, and no problems seven years out. Wishing you the best.
Thinking of you, Diane. Your inspiration has sent ripples of strength and courage through the education community. Take care of yourself…we’ll continue on as you heal.
Wishing a speedy and complete recovery for you. (For us too because we need you!!) Thank you so much for all you do!!
Speedy recovery sister! Great last paragraph! /still laughing/
As selfish as this may seem, I am glad that my wife and I had the opportunity to hear you speak in Syracuse just a short two weeks ago. I always wondered what a voice crying out in the wilderness sounded like. But, regardless of your injury, keep howling, and we both wish you a speedy recovery.
Be well. There are other warriors and the battle will be here (sadly) when you are healed.
So sorry to hear of your mishap. Hope you’ll have minimal discomfort and hope the surgery is not too cumbersome. Sounds like R & R is very needed. Take care.
Diane: In the short run, kindly ease up and take care of yourself. We need you in the game for the long run. There are thousands of us who are pulling for your recovery, so don’t over do it, please.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I’m recovering from a similar accident. It takes time.
Be well & of good cheer.
May your recovery be fast & complete. We need you!
