You will definitely want to read Kris Neilson’s description of Michelle Rhee’s upcoming tour, where she will dialogue with teachers about how to have a great teacher in every classroom.
Rhee will hold “teacher town halls” in Birmingham, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.
You won’t want to miss the chance to engage in candid dialogue with one of America’s most famous reformers, who will tell you how she was able to transform the public schools of the nation’s Capitol in less than four years.
Ask Rhee about classroom discipline, student safety, and professional courtesy:
JoJo Fox posted this in reply on The Chalk Face. A Perfect Dream!
I have a re-occurring dream in which Ms Rhee is seated on stage to speak to an auditorium of teachers. When she looks out over the packed auditorium she sees an unusual sight. She squints to make the image clear against the white stage lights…What she sees is bizarre and unnerving, for in every single seat is a person with bold red tape across their mouth.
Each sits and just stares at her expressionless. As she begins to speak, a small group rises and leaves in silence…the empty seats leave an obvious void in the otherwise sea of faces. She speaks again, another group rises and leaves. The empty seats increase and the void enlarges. It happens again, and again. Every time she speaks, more teachers leave. She is unnerved and demands to know what is going on.
Those remaining stare silently and give no answer. Yet each time Ms. Rhee shreeks at the audience, another group leaves. Now only a small group of fifteen remains seated in front. As she looks down from her place on stage to visually acknowledge the remaining few, they too rise and exit. But this time, when they leave, on the seats can be seen a message taped one word to each back rest…
The message is silent but rings in her ears. It clearly reads “Child Abuse is a criminal offense. We know what you did. We will never forget.” 15 parting words from a profession that has heard enough. The auditorium is now empty. There is total silence. The audience has dispersed into the cold night air and is nowhere to be seen. No one left to listen to the words of Ms. Rhee, not a soul to hear what she has to say.
That is, as it should be.
Michelle Rhee is realizing, rather belatedly, that there will be no real changes in our educational system without the involvement of the classroom teacher. The whole system could be revolutionized, but the education a child receives at school will still depend on the actions of “Miss Jones.” If she approves of Common Core or any other change, she’ll make it happen, if she doesn’t, there are 1001 ways for her to sabotage it. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong; it just is.
Of course, it’s now WAY too late for Ms. Rhee. With her resources, charisma and determination, she could have brought true improvement to the lives of impoverished children. Instead, she bashed the people who could actually implement her ideas. This is likely because Rhee lacks CHARACTER, the sine qua non of an educator.
This battle will be won by the people willing to be in the classrooms.
Linda Johnson,
I don’t think many classroom teachers will sign on to Michelle Rhee’s campaign to take away their right to due process in exchange for extra pay tied to test scores, or to her belief that public schools should be replaced by privately managed charters and vouchers, nor her support for for-profit schools.
No, of course not. What I meant is that if she had asked teachers for their ideas, she might have brought some real improvement for poor kids (preschool, support services, small class size, experienced teachers etc.). Her supposed “idea” of a quality education for every child is something we all support.
Why would anyone listen to a snake oil salesman like Rhee? She makes millions by holding teachers to a higher standard than she holds herself. At the same time, Rhee fabricates anecdotes for her own benefit.
In 2010, she admitted to taping children’s mouths shut. She abused children and kept her TFA job in Baltimore. In 2007, she lied on her resume and made outrageous claims without evidence about student growth as measured by her nonexistent test results. Rhee cannot show evidence that as a TFA volunteer she moved students from the 13th percentile to the 90th percentile as stated on her resume. After distributing a fake resume to get the DC job, she fired a DC principal and invited the media to film the firing. During her misadventures in DC, she covered up evidence and continues to downplay the significant evidence of cheating related to right-to-wrong answers. She seeks accountability for teachers through high-stakes test scores, but she dodges accountability for her own actions.
Rhee is a prime example of a charlatan who is motivated by her own narcissism.
