Fred Klonsky has an excellent assortment of photos from the Chicago protest today against school closings.
Parents, students, and teachers will not go quietly.
And they should not.

I wish they would all show up in D.C. next week!
Chicago Rocks!
Was there today, & I’m hoping to come to the march on Saturday, via Atlantic City!
It is a shame that all the country is relying on CTU to show the way to save our society and youth. It is shame on the rest of the country and their teachers unions like UTLA in L.A. and the N.Y. teachers unions for bowing and conspiring with the corporatist privatizers against all the rest of us including their own union members.
Way to go CTU! Try thousands not hundreds, as reported by media. Is this planned ignoring by mainstream media?
I watched on live steam, very powerful. Google search last night and today resulted in very few hits about crisis.
Wish CTU could come to Philly/DC.
From R. Emanuel’s Wikipedia page: “His mother, Marsha, is the daughter of a Chicago union organizer who worked in the civil rights movement, and briefly owned a local rock and roll club.” I’m pretty sure his mother would have been marching with the teachers for her sons’ right to go to public school (though he only went to public schools after moving to the suburbs…could he have some childhood prejudice against City Schools?).
Nationally, we must take interest in what is happening in Chicago and around the country. This is a massive assault on public education that must be answered by all communities. This is worst than no child left behind because now they want to leave whole communities without community schools or a vote in what to do about them. Where is Obama in this debate. He can’t just sit on the sidelines and hope it blows over. If he supports these types of assaults on our community then we truly have elected the wrong man. It time to hold our elected officials accountable, either they support public education or they don’t. With us or with the privateers. We then must make our decision about them and they will be affected.
Are you guys kidding me?! George is right–YOU have to do it where YOU’RE at. For those of you old enough to remember the Dusty Springfield song, “Wishin’ & Hopin,'” the lyrics are correct–“wishin’ & hopin’ & thinkin’ & prayin'” will NOT help–this is a call to action! I realize that active teachers are in fear for their jobs (well, though, what do the CTU people who put themselves in harm’s way have to say about that?!), but WHERE are you RETIRED educators? Can’t you help out, like we do here, & like the GREAT W.E.E. (Watchdogs for Ethics in Education) got rid of their Broad superintendent in Rockford, IL?! WHERE are the parents? (Julie Woesthoff, founder of PURE & co-founder of Parents Across America; Wendy Katten, founder of Raise Your Hand; 19th Ward Parents {sorry–I don’t have the names of its leaders, but I’ll find them & give you, too, a shout out!}WHERE are the community leaders? (Jitu Brown of KOCO, who went to see Arne Duncan–an amazing person & an inspiration) WHERE are the college & university profs. to do research, write letters & create petitions? (Mike Klonsky, DePaul Univ. Professor, who knows his stuff & speaks/writes out!)
All of these people are Chicago/IL Education Heroes, but we need this to be happening in YOUR cities, in YOUR states. If the tough don’t get going when the going gets tough, our kids are–& will continue to be–left behind.
And the Race to the Top WONT stop. FIND your leaders & get it together NOW–tomorrow is always a day too late. Yes, YOU can!
