The American Prospect invited a number of people to propose someone for President Obama’s cabinet in his second term. The basic idea was that this would be a “dream team,” so we could choose anyone we wanted. I was asked to recommend a new Secretary of Education.
Read here and devise your own “dream team” for President Obama.
I am far from qualified to make choices for the Cabinet, but I found it very interesting to read the reasoned opinions of people who are in a better position to make suggestions. I second your choice for Education Secretary after following your blog and being introduced to Linda Darling-Hammond through it. I would love to meet her in person.
Well said, Diane! I have the deepest respect for Linda Darling-Hammond’s work and have had the opportunity to cite her work several times. I wish the powers that be would sit up and take notice.
Linda Darling-Hammond is a great choice for Secretary of Education, but my pick would be Diane Ravitch 🙂
Ditto.
I agree 100% LDH is the best choice since Obama seems to be in a liberal mood 🙂
Having read many of Linda Darling-Hammond’s comments, she seems to be an ideal candidate. I could think of thousands that I would prefer over Arnie Duncan.
One thing I find puzzling is that there is so many Stanford MBA reformers that think they know better than Linda.
I hope every commenter echoes the wisdom of your selection… and you get a LONG list of responses… and President Obama reads this makes the appointment of LDH… I also hope I get the pony I’ve been wanting since I was 7 years old…
You!!!!!!
On education get it straight both Barack and Michelle Obama are right wing corporatizers and privatizers from their earliest times in Chicago. You are not going to change that now. This is who they are. You can dream, as all of us did in the beginning, of some major turn around but this is not FDR and Eleanor wherein FDR had a correction factor in his wife, Eleanor. On this round both of their futures were built on this and they are not going to change just because you dream about it. This is who they are.
LINDA all the way!!!! Obama led us to believe she was his choice when she was on his campaign committee. Hope he learned his lesson. I tried writing a note home (along with hundreds of other teachers and parents), but just got some canned response. Maybe I should address the next one to his mother-in-law.
Ben Bernanke!! Are they kidding. He was part of the crowd that allowed Wall Street to bundle mortgages. People seem to forget that Paul Volcker wrote a book back in 2006 foreseeing the downfall of the economy. (See his interview on Charlie Rose).
I nominate Diane Ravitch for US Secretary of Education. If President Obama will only accept this one meager recommendation, I will support him fully. Unfortunately, I believe he is largely a corporatist and will continue with the nonsensical policies that originate somewhere deep inside Bill Gates’ hind quarters. I’m therefore pretty comfortable with having voted for Dr. Jill Stein last November.
Wait. Isn’t Bill Gates the current Secretary of Education?
Oh, no. I forgot. He’s the CEO of Education.
Darling-Hammond would restore a Democratic agenda of equity, professionalism, …
That would be federal over-reach, since education is the business of the states.
Can anyone provide evidence of any Stanford Ed School faculty addressing the Koh memos on CERD?

As a general rule, it would be best for cabinet members to recognize an impeachable offense before they commit one…
The Feds are supposed to be the bully pulpit and assist school districts with extra funding such as Title 1 and special education. Now with minimum money they have become master controllers of the universe forcing on phony teacher accountability and privatization and corporatization. This all comes from the top. This is who they are. They must be stopped with this faulty misguided greed inspired phony policies.
Diane for Secretary of Education and Linda for her assistant. 🙂
Carol Burris!
