Our policymakers have lost sight of what schools do.

Times such as these cause us all reflect on the fragility and temporary nature of all the matters most. Unexpected tragedy makes us feel vulnerable. And it how well we do in protecting the most vulnerable that is the measure of our society. Whether it is protecting innocent children against the random violence of semi-automatic weapons in schools or on street corners, or support for the sick, disabled, elderly, mentally-ill, or the poor, as a country, we come up short. When we hear the rhetoric of Race-to-the-Top or First in the World, we need to ask, “For what”? Centuries ago, Rabbi Hillel said it eloquently, “If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?”

” If there was ever a time for educators to demand more for our children the time is now.”
I am still in a state of shock but my anger is beginning to build. I no longer have even a tiny bit of tolerance for the reformers and their agenda.
All the public funds that are spent on standardized testing, unfair teacher evaluations based on junk science, Common Core nonsense, the bullying of teachers, useless staff development, while mental health, real school security and poverty issues are largely ignored.
All teachers must stand in the gap for our students and demand a better use of public resources.
As I return to school on Monday, I hope no ” educational experts” darken the door of my classroom with their “agenda”. They will not want to hear what I have to say. Enough is enough.
Those dear little children and courageous adults who were senselessly murdered will not have died in vain.
