Another Broad grad is ousted. Wondering if it’s because as head of Chicago schls he was supposed to be the front person taking the heat in the protracted battle with CTU but let Emanuel become the front man who looked weak and had to settle rather than win?
I don’t think anyone is surprised. It will be more interesting to see how Barbara Byrd-Bennett does. She earned the respect of players on both sides of the table during the contract negotiations.
Hmm, don’t recall hearing a lot of good things about BBB from folks in the know in and around Detroit. But getting rid of Brizard is a plus.
Yes, Cleveland has certainly been first in line for Ohio stimulus “retire-rehire” handouts. The Education stimulus scandal has yet to be addressed.
As a person from the Rochester area, it was a joke he was hired in Rochester but even funnier that he went to Chicago. He’ll be back around. Clfford Janey went from Rochester to Washington DC, where he was replaced at midnight by Michelle Rhee. That actually gained him some sympathy! Rudy Crew went from NYC to Miami and is now in Oregon. These corporate reformers don’t fade away for long, they pop up somewhere else to do similar damage.
Would love to see a study done of where exactly this stimulus money for education actually went. Would not be very difficult to find out exactly where it went. One thing for sure, it did not go to the students. Follow the money. All this rhetoric is exactly what it is; just talk and circomventing the truth. Yes, So called anti-reformers fill our mailboxes with doom and gloom stories of their Sacrifices while overt graft and corruption is just ignored. Ravitch has yet to come to grip with the real ugly reality of Total incompetence sell-out that occurred under the Obama administration. To think that teachers who would not even sign a petition would have the time to write letters thst would have any affect on this tone deaf administration is “Magical thinking.”
Yes, Cleveland retire -rehire administrators will be our saviors.
What in blazes are you talking about? I doubt anyone here is ignoring theft and graft. It is regularly exposed here, it comes mainly from the “reformers.” Also, what makes you think our host has approved of these things you allude to?
If Montgomery County Maryland has good superintendents, why not find out what made them good and get the same characteristics in a superintendent for Chicago?
If unions, superintendents, and boards are working well somewhere, why not try to replicate it?
Agree. You can add Howard and Baltimore counties in Maryland who have hired some top notch educators as Sups. I just hope Prince George’s County does the same and doesn’t go with another Broad Academy drop-out like Dr. Hite or John Deasy.
YOU just might get J.C. next!!!
First and foremost, Eric- We in MoCo don’t hire inexperienced people. The people that are hired in Montgomery County are well vetted professionals with earned degrees and experience. They are also well compensated and most who opt to come here can be reasonably assured of a long and productive career.
In addition, in MoCo there is a culture of high expectations for all students. Parents, teachers and students are involved and engaged in the schools and the educational process. Employees are treated with courtesy and respect. Unlike their teaching counterparts in major urban areas, their isn’t the daily and constant teacher bashing, vilification and demonization in MoCo.
In addition, we spend over $2.2B per year on our public schools. One last thing, unlike the major urban and close in suburban schools that are supposedly “failing” in MoCo they aren’t testing every day in the name of achievement. Surprisingly, there is real teaching and learning taking place. What’s not to like.
Can this model be replicated? Yes. Will it in urban areas? No. Why? It takes time. Something, according to Arne, Michelle, and Joel we don’t have.
Good Morning- What do we call the resignation of Brizard??? A good start!!

From the article: “Barbara is the right person to pick up the baton and take it to the next level.”
I see a Bush-Obama transition here. Brizard was Bush, brought in deliberately to create churn and controversy. Byrd-Bennett is Obama, brought in to “heal the damage” and soothe people who trust that their outrage has been heard and that things will return to normal. However, precisely because the people are pacified, even more damage gets done and codified as the new “normal”. Trust me, this is not Rahm saying to the teachers, “Okay, you’ve won fair and square, have it your way.”
Reblogged this on Transparent Christina.
Here’s a nice timeline of BBB and her contributions to education:

Barbara Byrd Bennett padded numbers n Coeveland. Go luck with her at the head
Have you read Brizard’s bio? I wonder how he ever got the most difficult job in education, to start with.
I would like to know BBBennetts act and sat scores. She hasn’traised her pupil’s scores anywhere she has worked.
