For as long as I can remember, I have been a strong supporter of Israel. I was ten years old when the state was created as a refuge for the Jewish people, for those who survived the European genocide and for those who were fleeing persecution in Muslim countries across the Middle East.
In Sunday School every week, we children brought pennies, nickels, and dimes to fill up little blue tin cans marked “For Palestine.”
We celebrated the creation of the state of Israel and its triumph when it was attacked by all the neighboring Arab states. And we celebrated every other attempt to extinguish the only Jewish state in the world, the only safe haven for Jews.
But my unwavering faith in Israel has been shattered by Benjamin Netanyahu and his ruthless response to the horrific events of October 7, 2023.
His brutal campaign of violence in Gaza has not only killed tens of thousands of civilians but has made Gaza an uninhabitable wasteland.
Almost as awful is his refusal to stop the violent attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians living on the West Bank. The Israeli Defense Forces have failed to intervene as rabid settlers torch the homes of Palestinians and murder them.
Netanyahu is directly responsible for murder, aggression, and brutality. Instead of seeking peace, he is continuing the inhumane treatment of Palestinians and indulging the extremist settlers who want to seize more and more of the West Bank.
Netanyahu justifies whatever he does or condones because of the Hamas attack on October 7.
But there is a disturbing picture emerging about that day, stongly suggesting that Netanyahu was warned about October 7 and failed to take action. Did he decide not to protect the people who lived near the border with Gaza? If he did, he is an accessory to their deaths.
Like many other people, I was appalled by the savagery of October 7. I was obsessed by the accounts of the attacks on young people dancing until dawn at “the Rave.” They were hunted down and slaughtered like animals. They were killed as they hid, as they attempted to flee. Families in the Kibbutzim near the border were mercilessly murdered, even the children. Some 251 hostages were brutally kidnapped and taken to Gaza.
Immediately after that day’s horrifying events, I subscribed to the English-language version of Ha’aretz to learn what was happening from an Israeli perspective. Ha’aretz is a a liberal, anti-Netanyahu publication. Soon after the October 7 massacre, a disturbing story appeared. The story said that trained observers at a military monitoring post called Nahal Oz, near the Gaza-Israeli border, had repeatedly informed their superiors about what they saw every day on the other side of the fence in Gaza. To them, it appeared that Hamas was preparing for an incursion.
The monitors were identified as Combat Intelligence Collection Unit 414. Unit 414 consisted of 25 unarmed young women, trained to watch the border for signs of trouble.
They saw men conducting military exercises, studying maps and the terrain, practicing attacks near the fence, digging positions. All of it looked ominous to them but Israeli intelligence decided that these activities were not hostile. They were nothing more than training exercises.
Unit 414’s many warnings were ignored. On October 7, Unit 414 was defenseless. At least 15 of the young women were murdered, and seven were taken hostage.
Since that fateful day, we have learned that other nations warned Israel that Hamas was planning an attack.
CNN reported that Netanyahu was warned that Hamas was planning an attack, but did not pinpoint the date it would happen.
Two days after the massacre, The Times of Israel reported that Egyptian intelligence warned Israel that Hamas was planning a major attack. “Mounting questions over Israel’s massive intelligence failure to anticipate and prepare for a surprise Hamas assault were compounded Monday when an Egyptian intelligence official said that Jerusalem had ignored repeated warnings that the Gaza-based terror group was planning “something big” — which included an apparent direct notice from Cairo’s intelligence minister to the prime minister.”
The story appeared recently in The Atlantic magazine, which reported that the chief of Egyptian intelligence flew to Israel on September 26, 2023, to warn Netanyahu of Hamas’ plans.
In September 2026, the Associated Press reported that Netanyahu was warned by the United Arab Emirates that an attack was imminent.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was directly warned by the president of the United Arab Emirates that Hamas was planning a major offensive just days before the militant group attacked on Oct. 7, 2023, according to an Israeli newspaper report.
UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed spoke with Netanyahu 10 days before the attack and said Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza at the time, was planning an operation, the Haaretz daily said.
Bin Zayed said it would lead to bloodshed and could destabilize the region and undermine the Abraham Accords, the normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority nations, the newspaper reported.
But Netanyahu “reacted with relative calm,” according to Haaretz, which said he assured bin Zayed that Israel was prepared for any scenario and a possible attack was more likely to come from the occupied West Bank.
Netanyahu denied the story. He denied all the stories. He knew nothing. Yet the border of Gaza was not reinforced. Netanyahu shifted troops to the West Bank. Did he really know nothing?
Put the pieces together. Netanyahu had multiple warnings about a major attack. He did not bolster the military presence. He did not tell the organizers of “the Rave” to move their dance to a safer location. He did not warn the settlers to evacuate.
He continues to use his narrative about October 7 to bomb and destroy what’s left of Gaza and to allow West Bank settlers to harass and attack Palestinians in their homes and to steal their property..
The Israeli elections will be held on October 27. Netanyahu must be ousted. There should be a thorough public investigation of what he knew and when he knew it. In addition to the deaths that he is directly responsible for, he has made Israel a pariah nation. He should be held accountable for his crimes. Israel has a heavy burden to bear for the crimes he committed in Israel’s name. The good people, the generous people, the open-hearted Israelis must act to restore the Israel that so many of us once revered.
PS: As Americans, we should be able to sympathize with Israel’s dilemma. We have an authoritarian President who ignores the Constitution, norms, and laws to show his power. He has killed countless Iranians in a pointless war. He has murdered scores of men on the high seas, claiming they were carrying drugs but offering no evidence. He shut down USAID, which supplies food and medicine to the neediest in the world; this caused the deaths of many thousands of children in sub-Saharan Africa. He repeatedly tells the world that our elections–the centerpiece of our democracy–are rigged (is that a confession?) He has unleashed ICE to terrorize immigrants, some of whom have papers, and to kill people who committed no crime.
Will we ever reclaim our reputation as a nation of laws? Will Israel?

I’ve read news pieces with timelines that traced cash hefty payments from Netanyahu’s regime-faction to HAMAS, that led to what happened that day.

Yes, that too. Netanyahu thought he bought Hamas, but he didn’t pay enough.

no. Netanyahu didn’t want Fatah to be the prominent military power of Gaza. He didn’t want them to also join with the West Bank to make a stronger state. So he funded Hamas. I think everyone underestimated Hamas including the Gazans that voted for them.

Diane, it seems clear from this article and several of your previous posts that you believe Israel needs a change in leadership. My question is: What is the realistic alternative to Netanyahu, and how do you think a change in leadership would alter Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians? From what I’ve been hearing from Breaking Points, opposition to Netanyahu within Israel doesn’t necessarily translate into support for a less aggressive policy toward the Palestinians. I’d be interested in your thoughts on that distinction.

David,
Israeli politics is very complex and I am no expert. There is a very strong public desire for security. That’s the base of Netanyahu’s support. He promised security, and it made him popular. But Oct 7 was a huge failing by him.
As for alternatives, some are more hawkish than Bibi.
The only candidate that wants a two-state solution and Palestinian political rights is Yair Golan. He was an IDF general.
On Gaza itself:
Netanyahu:
Destroy Hamas → maintain Israeli security control → no Palestinian state → possibility of renewed military action if Hamas doesn’t disarm.
Bennett:
Destroy Hamas → much tougher military approach → strongly opposed to Palestinian statehood. In fact, he has criticized Netanyahu for not being tough enough in eliminating Hamas.
Lapid:
Destroy Hamas → then use diplomacy to establish a workable administration for Gaza; more open than Bennett/Netanyahu to eventual Palestinian sovereignty.
Eisenkot:
Strong military/security orientation → but argues Netanyahu’s strategy has failed and needs a different political/strategic endgame.
Golan:
Much greater emphasis on ending the occupation, Palestinian political rights and a two-state framework.

The conservative Likud Party is like the U.S. Republican Party, and they hold the majority in the Government half of the Knesset along with Shas, an ultra-Orthodox religious party that, for example, does not think women should be in the Knesset. There are liberal, secular, social democrat parties called Labor, Hadash, and Ta’al, but they hold very few seats in the Opposition half of the Knesset. I liked the old Labor Party years ago. The leaders of the Opposition, Yesh Atid, are considered “centrist”. Yesh Atid is maybe like the U.S. Democrats.
To win enough seats to topple Likud and Netanyahu, I think centrist Yesh Atid would need to come together with the centrist Blue and White Party and all the rest of the more liberal Opposition. It keeps almost happening, election after election in Israel.

Netanyahu financed and placed Hamas in power guaranteeing there would never be a two state solution since in the Hamas charter denies the right of Israel to exist. No two state solution possible. you missed the main point in that Netanyahu deliberately killed Israel citizens through the Hannibal directive. he never had the intent of saving hostages as Qatar the very evening of 10/7 said that all the noncombatant hostages would be returned pending Netanyahu‘s agreement. Obviously, he refused and wanted this hostage situation to justify all the future actions that you described. You mentioned the settlers but failed to go into the desecration and destruction of churches and mosques, physical attacks on non-Palestinian Christians, who they believe fervently are violating the second Commandment in worshiping Jesus who they consider is a false idol. Spitting on them is the least of the offenses. there have been many documented occasions of stoning and physical aggression against nuns and other clergy members. They want to cleanse Jerusalem of these impure Christians. When is Huckabee gonna wake up?

I appreciate the explanation of ambivalence in this post. The problem goes far too deep for me to claim I know the answer to it. I think I related a story from our trip through New York State in 2002, the summer after 9-11. We were washing clothes in Oxford and met a beautiful lady from Israel whose husband she said was teaching Talmud in the city. At some point in our conversation, I told her I hoped her family in Israel had escaped violence, that being a time when another paroxysm of such was passing through society there. Her response was bone chilling. Instead of reporting on the health or lack thereof of her family, she said “the Palestinians are not people.” I was speechless in the face of such a declaration.
As Netanyahu has prosecuted this war, I have often thought of her words. How truly tragic, in the Greek sense of the word, that these thoughts could guide humanity into yet another abyss.

Nutandyahoo has been elected six times. Pretty sure he represents the will of his people. The same people who rioted when soldiers were jailed for raping Palestinian prisoners on camera. The same people who routinely film themselves making fun of the Palestinians as they starve and die of diseases in filthy tents with no sanitation. The same people who hold picnics and children’s carnivals in front of the trucks trying to get aid into Gaza. The same people whom polls show overwhelmingly support Israel’s actions in Gaza (and those who don’t usually say Israel hasn’t gone far enough). The same people who are currently marauding through the West Bank terrorizing the Palestinian people and stealing their land.

I hope one day, you actually learn what it’s like to live next to people who want you annihilated. Maybe they’d slaughter your kids by burning them to death or shooting them or whatever. Then let’s see how far you’d go to stop them from the repeat performance they promise.
not all Israelis condone extremist settler behavior. Most don’t. You’re painting them with the same ideology of a far extreme crazy group.
also the Palestinians in area C are not always as docile as you believe. I’m not saying they all deserve what the extremists do. I’m saying there some in area c that also like to provoke. Area C is under Israeli law. It hasn’t been returned in land swaps bc the Palestinian Authority encouraged Palestinians to build their settlements disregarding what they just agreed upon with Israel. They encouraged building without proper documentation from the time both sides agreed the terms of the Oslo accords. So Israel basically said screw it.

And no, it’s not the Palestinians who want the Jews annihilated. That’s hasbara. The Palestinians just want to live safely in their own land.

“The Palestinians just want to live safely in their own land.”
Most of them do. Just like most Israelis want to live safely in their own land.
Trump and Putin were also elected multiple times, but anyone who makes the argument that the atrocities committed by those leaders reflects the will of ALL Americans or ALL Russians is a liar. Or perhaps just feeling guilty for normalizing those terrible men and thus helping to empower them to commit more of their atrocities when they should have been condemning them the way Diane Ravitch condemns Netanyahu.
Some people justified the murder of Ukrainian children by claiming that Putin just wanted people to live in their own land safe from the Nazis in Ukraine. I hope no one tries to argue that the atrocities committed by Putin and Trump reflects the will of all the people.
This post by Diane Ravitch rightly condemns Netanyahu.
It is possible to condemn atrocities on both sides instead of picking and choosing which atrocities are justified and which aren’t, or claiming that the atrocities committed by leaders reflects what all the people living in the country want in order to garner more hate and division.
People who say that the mass murder of over 1,000 Israelis on Oct. 7 (the per capita equivalent of over 40,000 Americans being killed on 9/11) reflected “the will” of all Palestinians has an agenda to sow hate against Palestinians.
Likewise those who say the same about the atrocities being committed by Netanyahu being “the will” of all Israelis, or that the atrocities committed by Trump’s private ICE army reflects “the will” of all Americans.

Surely you’re not saying the West Bank is Israel’s land, are you? Yet almost daily the Israeli settlers attack Palestinians in their West Bank homes, terrifying people, killing and stealing livestock and sometimes even killing people, all under the protection of the IDF and with impunity from consequences of the Israeli government. Are you okay with that?
As for Ukraine, less than 3% of the war’s victims (on both sides) have been children, which, sadly is par for wars. Well over 30% of Palestinian victims have been children. The Ukraine war is not comparable to the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians, which is completely one sided.

Of course I am not okay with that. Neither is Diane Ravitch! Did you actually read this post? She isn’t coming up with cockamamie reasons as to why Netanyahu was justified just because Netanyahu himself claims he is just fighting Hamas terrorists, the way Putin and his defenders said Putin was just fighting Nazis.
Do you recognize that the horrible devastation that Putin launched on Ukraine is also terribly wrong? Do you think the Ukraine children who aren’t killed by Russian military strikes dropping on their schools are not still suffering horribly as their entire country is devastated? Why the double standard? Because you seem to go out of your way to justify when Putin destroys a country that poses no danger to them. Why, instead, do you rationalize the harm done to children in Ukraine because the percentage of children killed was lower, despite their entire country being destroyed the way Gaza is being destroyed?
Why would you DEFEND what was happening in Ukraine instead of also condemning it the way Diane Ravitch condemns Netanyahu?
Diane Ravitch doesn’t pull her punches when it comes to criticizing Netanyahu, as this post shows. She also criticizes Putin but not in a way that demonizes every Russian to try to foment more hatred and violence toward anyone who is Russian.
Lots of people are rightly critical of Israel, but they don’t make ugly innuendoes that all Israeli people cheer on atrocities, and they don’t excuse what Putin did and is still doing to Ukraine with all sorts of justifications. That kind of criticism rings hollow.
Are you okay with what Hamas did on October 7?

Trump adores Putin. He flew to Alaska to meet him. He had US Marines roll out the red carpet for Putin. They had a private conversation, supposedly about ending the war in Ukraine. Then Trump planned an elegant lunch to honor Putin. But Putin got into his jet and departed before the lunch. Showed Trump who was in charge.
The war in Ukraine will end whenever Putin stops attacking Ukraine.
Putin’s foreign minister declared at the UN that the Russians won’t leave until they get what they want. More Ukrainian land.
The U.S. invited Russia to send a representative to the meeting if the G20. They were expelled when Russia invaded Ukraine. The other nations were stunned that Trump would make such a duplicitous move.
All because Trump wants to help his dear friend. V. Putin.

You can keep repeating the same petty stuff, but none of that changes the fact that Trump was the first to arm Ukraine when Obama refused to do so. That he unilaterally pulled out of nuclear treaties with Russia. That he has sanctioned Russia numerous times with the clear intent of destroying Russia’s economy. That he has (as you yourself admit) been arming Iran which the U.S. is at war with. People who are controlled by other people don’t do things like that to those people. The more you keep insisting Trump is controlled by Putin despite all evidence to the contrary, the more you just confirm that you are hopelessly propagandized by U.S. Russophobia and anti-communism (and, yes, I know that Russia is no longer communist, but things you’ve said in the past, like your fixation with the KGB, suggest that you haven’t quite accepted that fact.)
If you really want to know who controls Trump (and every American leader including the Democrats), you have to look about 1600 miles south-southwest of Moscow.

Why did Trump shock our Europeannallies to the G20 meeting. They are arming themselves to defend themselves against a Russian invasion. They know who this thug is. I daresay I trust their judgment of this tyrant more than yours.

I certainly did not prove you right. You have argued for years that Putin has never done anything wrong. He’s a good guy who is wrongly criticized for murdering his political opponents. We are the bad guys, not Putin, who is an admirable who only wants to improve the lives of the Russian people. You echoed his Kains that Russia felt threatened by NATO and that, when he did invade Ukraine, he wanted nothing except to kill the Nazis in Ukraine. Even as Putin murdered thousands of civilians, aimed missiles at apartment buildings, schools, and hospitals, you defended him.
And no one has been harsher towards Putin than Trump! No one!
I didn’t prove any of your claims, Dienne. Putin is a fascist tyrant. He murders anyone who threatens his complete control of Russia. His critics mysteriously fall out of windows on high floors. Even in jail and in good health, they die. He will win re/election with 90% of the vote. Maybe he will decide to make it 70% as a pretense.
Your love of Putin is beyond my understanding. I will try not to respond in the future.

Gave money to Ukraine…You mean when he asked for dirt on Hunter Biden in exchange for already appropriated funds? Trump doesn’t give money to anyone out of the goodness of his heart. Trump is Putin’s useful idiot. It serves Putin’s purposes to keep us in a prolonged conflict with Iran for more than one reason.
