That was fast. Yesterday the Justice Department announced it was withdrawing from efforts to punish four big law firms that refused to capitulate to Trump’s demands. Today, it changed course.
Did Trump intervene? We know he never admits defeat. He’s still searching for evidence that he won the 2020 election.
One would think that between launching a war and obsessing about the drapes in the new White House ballroom, he would have enough on his plate.
But give in to defiant law firms? Let them boast that they beat him? Him, the most powerful, most winningest man in the world? Never!
The Trump administration indicated on Tuesday that it planned to renew its defense of executive orders that it had leveled against law firms, a sharp reversal a day after asking a court whether it could abandon the fight.
In a motion filed with the appeals court in the District of Columbia, where the cases are playing out, the Justice Department formally asked to withdraw its request on Monday to abandon the cases against four law firms. It was not immediately clear how the court would respond; the department is scheduled to file a brief in the case on Friday.
The Justice Department did not comment. The White House declined to comment.
On Monday, the administration, in a court filing, asked an appeals court if it could walk away from its appeal of victories the firms had won against the White House. The move was a significant concession by the White House that it could not stand behind its orders.
But on Tuesday morning, the Justice Department abruptly changed its position. In an email to the four firms contesting the executive orders, a department official apologized for the short notice and said it would file a motion to withdraw its voluntary dismissal.
The email was sent to the firms shortly after 10 a.m. The Justice Department asked the firms to indicate whether they planned to oppose its attempt to reverse course by 10:30 a.m. It was not immediately clear how the firms would respond.
But nearly two hours later, the Justice Department formally filed a motion to withdraw the motion from the previous day.
A White House official said that there were ongoing discussions in the White House Counsel’s Office about how to proceed.
The orders seek to bar firms that refuse to capitulate to President Trump from government business and suggest that their clients could lose government contracts. They had spurred widespread panic in the legal profession and led many firms to submit to Mr. Trump rather than face the existential threat his directives represented.
But four firms — Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, Jenner & Block and Susman Godfrey — fought the orders, quickly receiving favorable rulings from district court judges. Nine others struck deals, most notably Paul Weiss, drawing sharp criticism.
It was not immediately clear on Tuesday what had prompted the about-face. One question that the administration’s decision a day earlier to abandon its cases raised was whether the deals it made with the nine firms would survive and whether those contracts — which were not made public — were considered unconstitutional given that the district court ruling would be final.

It’s full steam ahead with these Fascist wannabes–mainly Trump & Trump’s brain, Stephen Miller, Minister of Propaganda. As an advisor & fellow wannabe Steve Bannon has said, they just need to always flood the zone so not to give anyone time to focus on any one of the multitude of legal & illegal infractions the Regime commits daily. Why any reasonably sane public official in his administration, Congress, or state governments put up with following an obvious narcissistic, insecure madman, I’ll never understand! The only way to stop the madness will be for Republicans to finally stand up to him by just minimally doing their constitutional duties & voting against him in every way possible, or acutally Impeach him on any of dozens of grounds. Democrats can whine, bitch & condemn all they want, but they have no power unless some or many Republicans join them. I’m sure 1930’s politicians & business leaders must have wished they had made a better effort to stop the crazy, loud-mouthed little mustachioed, failed artist loser before things got out of hand in their country & the rest of Europe.

Bob,
Happily the midterms in November give the public a chance to rein the Mad king in.
I just met two fellow New Yorkers who interacted with Trump long ago, when he was a boastful but failing developer.
One said that “everyone knew” that Don’s father was afraid of his son. They sent him away to military school in hopes that his arrogant behavior would be corrected.
The other said the word in DC circles is that Melania is Donald’s handler.
Who knew?

Don’t count on Republicans to stand up to him.

Given how often Trump acts impulsively, making decisions without thinking through important matters and taking a wide variety of possible consequences into consideration, and then abruptly changes his mind, I can’t help but wonder if he has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
He is 6 years older than I am and, when I was growing up in the 50s, they called it “hyperkinetic.” I know because I heard my mom’s college educated friends suggest that since I was very active as a toddler and preschooler, I might have it. However, the example they gave of a child we all knew that had been diagnosed with it was a boy on my block that ran around with a paper bag on his head, who often crashed into walls etc. So my mom said I had a lot of sense and would never do anything like that. She was right, too, I was not that thoughtless or impulsive, and I soon outgrew the high activity level, so I didn’t get formally labeled. I would not be surprised though if that’s one of Trump’s longstanding undiagnosed problems, since the inability to inhibit impulses can be a key indicator –and he so often acts like that kid who ran around with a bag over his head…

Yes, but more than just a gentle “touch,” I think. And despite his father claiming that he gave Donald “free rein” because “he has great vision and everything he touches seems to turn to gold. … Donald is the smartest person I know.” My guess is that his dad (who also had dementia) didn’t notice that much of the gold his son had he just added himself, and maybe the dad didn’t know too many smart people. Because who loses money on casinos? (There is nothing “smart” about locating 3 of them close by one another so that they have to compete with each other)
A lot of his success had to do with coming from an advantaged background, as well as dumb luck, while his failures were all his own –and there were many.
I don’t think he was ever all right or all there though.

We should all be so fortunate as to be rescued repeatedly whenever we hit bumps in the road. That includes when it’s from our own making. For him, besides casinos, think Trump Plaza, steaks, vodka etc, as well as a number of his products that are unethically (but profitably) made in foreign countries, like bibles and clothing, etc. (See: https://workandmoney.com/s/trump-products-made-in-china)
Then there’s the illegal actions, like discrimination against African Americans and Hispanics who he would not allow to live in his father’s buildings, total rip-offs, like fake Trump University, fake charity, and attacks on women, etc
And there’s everything he’s doing now, all the stuff being used to distract us from seeing even more examples of his utter lack of morality, such as the expansionism and warring –so that we forget about the Epstein files and attacks on little girls…
Etc., etc., etc…
