Trump, being Trump, turns everything into a story about him. When the news first came out that Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were murdered in their home in Los Angeles, Trump posted a callous, cruel comment about their deaths. He wrote the following comment on Monday morning before the police arrested their son Nick.
Trump attributed their deaths to their hatred of him. What?
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS. He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
Trump’s message was so cynical and self-serving that several Republicans criticized his heartlessness.
Politico mentioned several Republicans who were taken aback by Trump’s narcissism.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said that the deaths of Reiner and his wife were “a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”
Rep. Mike Lawler said that Trump’s comments were “wrong,” and that their deaths deserved “sympathy and compassion from everyone in our country, period.”
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky said Trump’s post was “inappropriate and disrespectful”; he challenged “anyone to defend it.”
Jenna Ellis, who was one of Trump’s personal lawyers who defended him after he lost the election in 2020, criticized Trump’s post.
The New York Times wrote about her reaction:
“A man and his wife were murdered last night. This is NOT the appropriate response,” Jenna Ellis, Mr. Trump’s former lawyer who is now a conservative radio host, wrote on social media on Monday. “The Right uniformly condemned political and celebratory responses to Charlie Kirk’s death. This is a horrible example from Trump (and surprising considering the two attempts on his own life) and should be condemned by everyone with any decency.”
Trump shows who he is without shame or guile. He has no empathy, no compassion, no sense of propriety. Every issue, every interaction, every event boils down to his self-interest. Nothing else matters.

Trump suffers from “sun king” delusion. He believes he is the center of the universe, and everyone else simply rotates around him. His sycophants are his enablers.

The list of despicable things Trump has said is very long, but this one is at the top. A child murdering his parents should inspire feelings of sympathy and deep sadness no matter what the victims’ political beliefs were. Trump proves, yet again, that he is the lowest character person to ever be President.
Over the last two years I’ve seen several links to National Review essays included in reader comments on this blog. This blog’s host has always dismissed those essays with ad hominem attacks. To her NR is just “rightwing” so anything they publish can be disregarded without evaluating it on its merits. Here is what one of NR’s lead writers wrote today about Trump’s recent appalling comments:
“…there are some Americans still so blinded by partisan animus and cult-like loyalty that their first instinct will be to defend the president’s remarks. We will never become a better or more united country if we cannot point to indecent actions taken and statements made by those we agree with politically and say, “This is wrong. This is something that decent human beings do not do. You must do better than this.”…..”The president of the United States is a hateful raging lunatic with all the empathy of Jeffrey Dahmer.”

Great to see that even the National Review sees how cruel, mean and deranged Trump is.
Actually, I doubt you have read every post for 13 years. I bear no hostility to the National Review. I worked in the George HW Bush administration.
I am hostile to racists and other haters. Hate seems to be a core Principle for Trump.

I’m to the Left of NR, but I appreciate their principled stands. They have never justified this type of conduct from Trump or anyone else. If only the millions of left-wing people who celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk were that way.

I don’t know anyone who celebrated Kirk’s murder. No one did on this blog. Not I and none of the commenters.

I accept that neither you nor any commenters here celebrated Kirk’s murder. But acroos social media there were many celebrations – did you not see that?

I do not take responsibility for what other people say or write. I abhor violence. I condemned the murder of Charlie Kirk.

Joel: since you brought up the Kirk murders and the reaction to them, I offer this evaluation.
There may have been people who delighted in his murder, but I never read any of their comments. What I did read were comments that tried to explain to Kirk’s fans why his commentary was often perceived as toxic. Many of Charlie’s devoted listeners took offense to the attempt to explain why toxic language might have been a part of the assassination.
When the News began to get out about Reiner, my first fear was that it might have been politically motivated, given his outspoken criticism of Trump. Naturally, I was not relieved to find it even more tragic. I wonder if the Trump post attempted to control the dialogue in the event it was political, but to suppose that would be incorrect.

Joel Henderson, why do you feel it necessary to attack Diane with bogus accusations?! I do not give National Review points for stating the obvious, that Trump is a horror show and that his latest comment concerning the tragic death of Rob Reiner and his wife is beneath contempt, to put it mildly. Three more years of this kakistocracy, yikes!
Joel H., hmmm, his contribution is on the trollish side.

Thank you, Joe Jersey. It’s good to have a brain and ethics.

Trump craves attention even when it’s negative. Since he has no capacity for empathy, a conscience, or self reflection anything that shifts attention to him serves his warped purpose.

I think comments like this are intentional to send a message to Trump’s blindly loyal MAGA KKK cultists, like those who turned out to attempt a violent, bloody coup attempt for him on January 6, 2021.
Trumps message like this one lets those loyalists know it’s okay to murder anyone who has TDS (according to Trump), those who wrongly lied and criticized him for stuff he refuses to admit he did even though the evidence is overwhelming.
That’s why Trump pardoned all those who did what he wanted during Trump 1.0, letting all the loyalist know he will pardon them too for murdering anyone those loyalists think should be on Trump’s revenge list.
Trump wants his loyalists to go out and start killing all the Never Trumpers.

Trump, along with Herr Stephen Miller & other autocrat wannabes, have been continually trying to soften up the populace for whenever their version of the Nazi Brownshirt/Storm Troopers start hitting the streets against more than just “them thar illegals”, and start going after those other anti-Americans– transies, gays, dark-skinned immigrants, Jews, Socialists, libtards, intellectual elites, late night talk show hosts, or anyone else who speaks disparagingly of The Regime. But, nah……it could never happen here, right???????

Zero empathy, nothing outside of himself. Pure narcissism. Makes Buchanan look like FDR.

To Joel, who stated, “If only the millions of left wing people who celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk…”– As Diane stated, Joel, “I don’t know anyone who celebrated Kirk’s murder.” Not only will I say, “Neither do I,” but I think if, indeed, ANY–many–“left wing people celebrated,” you are most certainly GROSSLY exaggerating ANY number (&, again, I am quite certain any # would be VERY few, if any) by saying “millions.” JUST.NOT.TRUE.
& I will repeat what I have said, that Charlie Kirk’s murder was a tragedy to be condemned, the same words Diane said here & the same words I heard from the many “left wing” people I know.
