John Merrow was the education correspondent for PBS for many years. Now, in retirement, he continues to write and help us think through the existential moments in which we live.
More than five million demonstrators in about 2000 communities stepped forward to declare their opposition to Donald Trump, on June 14th. “No Kings Day” was also Trump’s 79th birthday, Flag Day, and the anniversary of the creation of the American army.
So now we know what many of us are against, but the central question remains unanswered: What do we stand FOR? What do we believe in?
Just as FDR called for Four Freedoms, the Democratic party needs to articulate its First Principles. I suggest three: “The Public Good,” “Individual Rights,” and “Rebuilding America after Trump.”
THE PUBLIC GOOD: Democrats must take our nation’s motto, E pluribus unum, seriously, and they must vigorously support the common good. That means supporting public libraries, public parks, public schools, public transportation, public health, public safety, public broadcasting, and public spaces–almost anything that has the word ‘public’ in it.
INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS: Because the fundamental rights that are guaranteed in our Constitution are often subject to interpretation, debate, and even violent disagreement, Democrats must be clear. Free speech, freedom of worship, habeas corpus, and other fundamental rights are not up for debate, and nor is a woman’s right to control her own body.
Health care is a right, and Democrats must make that a reality.
Conflict is inevitable–think vaccination requirements–and Democrats should come down on the side of the public good.
Because Americans have a right to safety, Democrats should endorse strong gun control measures that ban assault weapons that have only one purpose–mass killing.
REBUILDING AMERICA AFTER TRUMP: The Trump regime was and continues to be a disaster for a majority of Americans and for our standing across the world, but it’s not enough to condemn his greed and narcissism, even if he goes to prison. Let’s first acknowledge that Trump tapped into serious resentment among millions of Americans, which further divided our already divided country.
The challenge is to work to bring us together, to make ‘one out of many’ in the always elusive ‘more perfect union.’ The essential first step is to abandon the ‘identity politics’ that Democrats have practiced for too long. Instead, Democrats must adopt policies that bring us together, beginning with mandatory National Service:
National Service: Bring back the draft for young men and women to require two years of (paid) National Service, followed by two years of tuition or training credits at an accredited institution. One may serve in the military, Americorps, the Peace Corps, or other helping organizations. One may teach or work in distressed communities, or rebuild our national parks, or serve in other approved capacities. JFK famously said “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Let’s ask BOTH questions.
Additionally: 1) Urge states to beef up civic education in public schools, teaching real history, asking tough questions. At the same time, federal education policies should encourage Community schools, because research proves that schools that welcome families are more successful across many measures.
2) Rebuild Our Aging Infrastructure: This is urgent, and it will also create jobs.
3) Adopt fiscal and monetary policies to address our burgeoning national debt. This should include higher taxes on the wealthy, emulating Dwight Eisenhower.
4) Adopt sensible and realistic immigration policies that welcome newcomers who arrive legally but close our borders to illegal immigration.
5) Rebuilding America also means rebuilding our alliances around the world. Democrats should support NATO and Ukraine, and rejoin efforts to combat climate change.

Getting rid of Trump will not be enough to start rebuilding the damage that started with Nixon.
And Trump didn’t do all that damage alone.
MAGA will still be here for generations. If Margorie Taylor Greene loses an election, hugely, that might be a good sign that MAGA is probably on its way out.
Even with MAGA back under their rural caves and rocks, there are Tea Party Republicans still in Congress and in state legislators too.

A very solid and worthy Manifesto.
It will need a strong coalition of many dedicated to Compassion, Respect and Tolerance. Those proverbial bridges will need to be built on both sides, by the True Patriots

Mr. Merrows list is righteous. However, if you draw lines between the segments and a triangle around it you get Maslow’s Hierarchy
Americans affected life and death and pay-check-to-pay check are stuck at survival at the bottom. Immigrants, women’s health, and any one who is “different” are right there with them. The millions losing health care, insurance, and more maybe one step up.
And, Republicans don’t care even if they’re affected. Trump has told and is telling them he (of all people) understands their pain and is going to fix it.
Self-actualization? Not even on the radar.
As for Democrats’ MESSAGING, same story.
“No Kings?” – sounds like Democrats. Other side could care less if he’s referred to as a king. They don’t put it together with the demise of three branches of government. How about “No Authoritarian” or “No One Man Gets to Control Your Life” Day?
“Killing Democracy?” They don’t care he’s doing away with democracy. It’s an elusive concept. Their definition of Democracy is a “VoteOcracy.” How about screaming about GOP Killing Government? Killing the Three-branch system of checks and balances? Owning Judges? Access to your personal information?
“Hands Off?” – of course. Hands-off what? Hands-off my social security number, my health care, anything with substance.
They’re playing hardball with Project 2025 and the Republicans don’t even see it. Puppets and Scripts already embedded in enacted Executive Orders.

Response to John Merrow list
David A. Graham’s book/fastback on Project 2025 is scary. As I read that, my lens changes on what we are up against and how miserable the Democrats are at messaging.
They maga/mawa crowd are just like our middle eastern enemies. They plotted 9/11 for a decade. October 7 for three years. They play the long game with patience. The Republicans have been at it for over 30 years! Judicial seats. Hot button issues that resonated with angry people (about books, DEI, LGBTQ). They infiltrated localities through school boards. They hand-picked candidates and aides. Controlled the message (fox). For decades!
And, they found the MAGA/MAWA protesters and billionaires to carry the messages.
Question: Would any items on Mr. Merrow’s list cause an Independent to vote Democrat? They are all absolutely necessary for our future, but when health care, hospitals 100 miles away, no job security, and no insurance and real week-to-week cost of living are at risk; the topics on the list are out of sight out of mind. (A quick note on that in another response).
The MAGA/MAWA crowds serve one purpose: to lather up the angry Americans which means votes.
They are why in the midst of war, bombings, and natural/national disasters trump blurts out something about “transgender people,” “murderer and rapist immigrants”, “DEI hires” and other coded-slurs – and some demand for a cease fire somewhere.
They vote for the tv personality who hollers at the moon and one day their issue will be the one he hollers for.
The Public Good? Individual Rights? After-Trump? National Service and Infrastructure?
We did that a year ago at the Convention and just kept playing it over and over.

Damn, you saved me a lot of typing . Someone has to tell John; that Biden passed near 1.5 trillion on infrastructure work in 3 bills. . It did not get him / Democrats many if any more votes from the Union Construction trades, who were the main beneficiary of that spending. Sure the Democrats spent 37 million in the State of Ohio pushing transgender rights, in the Senate race. Oh wait I got that backwards. It was the Right that spent 37 million in the last 2 months before the election. Trying to tie Sherod Brown one of the most populist pro working class, pro Union Democrats in the Country to Transgender athletes in Ohio Schools . 350 thousand student athletes in Ohio 6 of whom are Transgender . I don’t think Brown ever said a word on the topic. Perhaps those who say Democrats are focused to much on identity politics should put some real statistics on the table. I am reasonable. How about we do a study to compare how often Democrats and their media allies mention a hot button Identity issue to how often Republicans do . Why don’t we start with the word Trans Gender ! We can end with Woke !

Another well thought out essay by Mr. Merrow.
“2) Rebuild Our Aging Infrastructure: This is urgent, and it will also create jobs.”
Besides rebuilding infrastructure, there’s also the area of recycling. I’ve considered a start up that focuses on sorting and responsibly recycling our throw away items. It would provide a ton of jobs. Apply for grants that pay for serious research into faster degradation of plastics and contaminants.
“3) Adopt fiscal and monetary policies to address our burgeoning national debt. This should include higher taxes on the wealthy, emulating Dwight Eisenhower. “
Huge. It’s why SS is withering away. Elon Musk’s “…biggest Ponzi Scheme ever…” quote made me ill. Disgusting. “Let them eat cake”.
“The essential first step is to abandon the ‘identity politics’ that Democrats have practiced for too long.”
Frank Shaeffer was a Christian Rightist whose father was in the vanguard of that movement. He made a 180 degree turn when he saw where the movement was really going. During this last election cycle he made a plea to Democrats to take the focus off of identity politics. He said he knows many people who want to move away from the Republican party but are so seriously turned off by the subject that they’ll end up voting for Trump, who opposes it. And he was correct.

So Biden did not spend 1.5 Trillion on Infrastructure .
Deficits only matter when Democrats are in office . But on the matter of fair taxation . How many republicans backed the proposal in the 750 Billion dollar infrastructure bill to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for it? . A number please !
Since the 1970s with Abortion or shall we call the issue what it really was segregation . The right has waged a non stop culture war . Actually go a little further back to Civil Rights and Woman’s Rights in the 60s.
Instead of fighting back the left has played defense. If a Democrat ever attacked rural America the way Republicans attack Cities . The fools would be clutching their pearls apologizing for him. Hillary had the nerve to point out that half of Trumps supporters were SCUM (no; she would not use effective language ). While she apologized to the other half for failing the SCUM .
Biden would have increased vaccination rates dramatically ,if he mocked those that died not taking it vs begging them to take it.

Joel,
I think Democrats try to cling to outdated, obsolete norms of decency and honesty.
Maybe it’s a mistake in this age of vulgarity, where Trump says whatever pops into his mouth, no matter how insulting, no matter how obscene. He is creating new norms, appropriate for the gutter.
When Hillary said that Trump’s voters were “deplorable,” the national media went berserk. How dare she? What language! Outrageous!
Yet Trump calls his critics “scum,” “radical left lunatics who hate America,” etc. and it brings a yawn.
Double standard.

I just read that the budget bill passed. What a travesty. Only positive thing I see on the horizon is the spineless Republicans getting kicked out on the street in the midterms.

Biden had a robust infrastructure program. When I drive around, I see signs that say “Funded by the Bipartisan Infracture Act.”
If Trump had passed it, the sign would say “Funded by the Donald J. Trump Infrastructure Act.”
