Thom Hartmann, independent journalist, finds it curious that the Republican Party so frequently displays Nazi symbolism. And why does the major media ignore usually overlook the fondness for Nazi iconography by Trump, Musk, and their allies? Is it their youth? Their historical ignorance? Their caution?
He writes:
Is it a shout-out to the hardcore racists and haters that make up the GOP’s base, all just a performance to get enough votes to win elections? Or a proclamation that the end-goal of Republican governance is the destruction of American democracy, perhaps in deference to Vladimir Putin? How about it’s being a bizarre attempt at trolling people old or well-educated enough to remember or know what Nazism inevitably leads to?
One of the enduring mysteries in today’s American political life is why so many Republican politicians and their friends are adopting or promoting openly Nazi symbols, iconography, and slogans.
And why are America’s mainstream media so unwilling to even report on, much less discuss, all the Nazi and neo-Nazi references surrounding Trump and today’s captive Republicans?
Elon Musk, Trump’s #1 campaign donor and co-president, threw two Nazi “Sieg Heil” salutes following Trump’s inauguration, causing the media to fall all over itself trying to make excuses for his behavior. Actual, declared Nazis and white supremacists were thrown into an ecstatic tizzy, however, with the Ohio Proud Boys posting the clip with the words, “Heil Trump!”
The neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe posted the Musk clip with the Waffen SS lightning-bolt emoji; their leader, Christopher Pohlhaus, wrote: “I don’t care if this was a mistake. I’m going to enjoy the tears over it.” Other neo-Nazi, Nazi, and white supremacist groups across the web jumped in to celebrate the salute, as Rolling Stone extensively documented.
It all seems to have really picked up steam after young neo-Nazis marched in Charlottesville in 2017, chanting Nazi slogans, murdering a young woman protestor, and giving Hitler salutes.
Our media completely failed to identify them as Nazis, even though they were proclaiming that themselves.
Since Trump’s endorsement of their behavior with his “good people on both sides” comment, which he continues to defend, such behavior has been emulated across the nation.
Poke anything associated with Trump and odds are Nazi memes will pop out.
The “America First” slogan was the name of an openly pro-Nazi movement in America in the 1930s, a fact that seems to have been lost down the memory hole. And Trump told his former Chief of Staff, Marine General John Kelly, that “Hitler did some good things…” along with referring to American soldiers as “suckers” and “losers.”
And then there are Trump’s attacks on the media, echoing Joe Stalin and Adolf Hitler with their “enemy of the people” rhetoric. He’s suing media outlets left and right, just like Putin and Orbán did in their early years to intimidate reporters and bankrupt opposition publications and websites.
Elon Musk just called for reporters for CBS’s 60 Minutes program — “the biggest liars in the world” — to receive “a long prison sentence.”
In an echo of Hitler’s “denunciations,” his “border czar” is even calling for the police at the Department of Justice to investigate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for telling immigrants about their constitutional rights.
After pointing out at a rally that Hitler said that Jews were “poisoning the blood” of Germany (yes, he pointed it out himself), Trump then said of nonwhites in America:
“It’s true. They’re destroying the blood of the country, they’re destroying the fabric of our country, and we’re going to have to get them out.”
The 2021 CPAC meeting featured a stage resembling the Odal Rune, a potent Nazi symbol, that drew a rebuke from the hotel hosting the conference.
In 2022, Trump dined with Nick Fuentes, a prominent and out Holocaust denier. Trump later posted a 30-second video that twice references a “unified Reich.” Trump’s buddy Steve Bannon has repeatedly endorsed the notoriously antisemitic and racist novel The Camp of the Saints” which characterizes Black Americans, “dirty Arabs,” and “feces-eating Hindu rapists” as engaging in a conspiracy to destroy white people and civilization.
His son, Don Jr., retweeted a message by a white supremacist who attacks interracial dating and queer people, “liked” tweets by another account that postspictures of Jews with exaggerated noses, made a “joke” about gas chambers and our media, and participated in an interview with a talk show host who said slavery was the best thing to have ever happened to Black people.
When Vice President Vance visited Germany this past week, instead of meeting with that nation’s chancellor or his peer, he hung out with the leader of the Nazi-adjacent AfD party, while giving a speech in which he extensively quoted Putin’s sentiments. Proud to be known by the company he keeps…
And then there’s DOGE, the official title of the iron-fisted, massively rich oligarchs who ruled Venice for ten centuries that’s been reclaimed by billionaire Musk for himself and his work. The logo is arguably explicit, as Jim Stewartson points out at his excellent mind-war.com newsletter/website:
“On the DOGE logo there are 8 stars above the cartoon, and 8 stars on the flag inside the gear. This is another National Socialist signal. It means Heil Hitler. Musk has used this signal numerous times, in addition to quite literally doing two Hitler salutes at the inauguration.”
There are also 14 teeth on the gear that makes up the O in DOGE in the logo, a direct rip-off from Hitler’s Nazi labor movement of the 1930s, reflecting the famous “14 words” memorized by every white supremacist: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children….”
Following that theme, Trump, Vance, and multiple Republican politicians and media figures have, for years, promoted the Naziesque “Great Replacement Theory” that posits American Jews are paying their agents in business, government, and society to hire Black, brown, and queer people and women to replace white men.
Additionally, when Trump tweeted out his Anders Breivik quote about saving the country and thus violating no laws, Musk retweeted it with 14 American flag emojis. These guys aren’t subtle because they don’t have to be; they know any American media that calls them out will either be attacked as paranoid or they’ll simply say it was a joke or misunderstanding.
But their followers know exactly what they’re saying, and why. Just like they understood that Trump’s birther crap was really his way of saying, “Hey, white people, have you noticed that guy in the White House is Black? We can’t tolerate that!”
And they also clearly heard the dog whistle when he came down the escalator and attacked brown-skinned immigrants. Or when he claimed the Potomac crash was because the helicopter pilot was a woman hired “because of DEI.”
Or when Trump offered refugee status to white South Africans, but not to Black or Indian South Africans.
There’s so much evidence of Trump’s and Musk’s apartheid leanings, it’s pretty much impossible to deny any longer. Which raises the question: Is our media in with the Nazis, or just committed to Not-Seeing them?

The media tries to remain neutral towards Trump’s obvious dog whistles and antics. When they do cover some of the racist comments, they only stay on the topic for one news cycle unlike what they did with Joe Biden’s “questionable mental status” that appeared on the news over many weeks. When the mainstream media fails to do its job, the independents do cover Trump’s missteps in more depth. However, they usually have a limited, more educated audience. If we want people to really see who Trump is, it is the Democrats that need to step up with much better messaging.
Liberals could learn from the GOP about messaging. In this past election, the GOP convinced a much greater number of people to vote against their own self interests including more Black and brown people. Some Democrats think they should remain quiet and let Trump shoot himself in the foot. I believe the average person is far too busy to seek out the news. If Democrats want to reach working families, they have to focus on key themes that they repeat over and over. Right now with all the chaos and numerous missteps, there is a treasure trove of material they should exploit. IMO they should start calling the conservatives Russian sympathizers, and they should highlight any racist or pro-Nazi behavior as well as any damaging economic news. The message should be short, catchy and abundantly repeated. Every Democrat that gets in front of a camera or talks to a reporter needs to repeat the same message. Democrats must start strategizing to play the long game as the GOP does. They cannot start a month before an election and expect they will be heard. Working Americans are very busy.

Thom Hartman, like most liberal journalists and pundits, simply doesn’t understand that the United States is in actual fact no longer a representative republic and has for the past two decades been an oligarchy. The way the United States “works” today is the way that an oligarchy functions. The media is owned by oligarchs, and — as Bezos made clear with The Washington Post — there will be no major media criticism of the oligarchical hierarchy.
AMERICA IS ALREADY AN OLIGARCHY…HAS BEEN FOR DECADES
After researching government laws passed since Citizens United, Princeton University researcher Martin Gilens and Northwestern University researcher Benjamin Page documented that the U.S. is no longer a representative republic because the government does not represent the interests of the majority of the country’s citizens, but is instead ruled by the rich and powerful. The researchers analyzed 1,800 U.S. policies enacted over a period of two decades and compared the laws and regulations that were passed to those favored by average Americans to those favored by wealthy Americans and corporations, and here’s what the research revealed: “EVEN WHEN A MAJORITY OF CITIZENS DISAGREES WITH ECONOMIC ELITES OR WITH ORGANIZED SPECIAL INTERESTS, ORDINARY CITIZENS GENERALLY LOSE.”
America has become an oligarchy because of the Supreme Court. Today’s Roberts Court will live in the same odious infamy as the Taney Court whose 1857 Dred Scott ruling declared that human beings are mere property, which lit the fuse to the ruinous Civil War from which America has yet to recover. In its 2010 Citizens United ruling, the Roberts Court ruled that mere property is equal to a human being, leading to corporations being given the “human right” to pour unlimited dollars into America’s political system, putting government up for sale to the highest bidder and corrupting the system to the extent that our nation has become an oligarchy that no longer represents or serves We the People.
Ordinary folk who have no clue what the word “oligarchy” means have nonetheless long recognized the fact that their government is no longer by and for We the People. The System simply no longer “works” for them, so, like the biblical Samson, they want to tear down The System, even if that means bringing it crashing down onto their own heads. I call it “THE SAMSON SYNDROME”:
This “Samson Syndrome” is why they voted for Trump in 2016 and again in 2024: They know he’s a liar and wholly amoral, but they are counting on him to tear down The System that they hate, even if that means it crushes them. THAT’S why they have voted again and again against their own self-interests…and why they cheer for the coup.
CONGRESS IS COMPLIANT OUT OF FEAR:
Musk has threatened that any Republican who opposes the slash-and-burn attack he’s carrying out on government agencies will be crushed in the 2026 elections because he promises that he will spend $100,000,000 each to defeat every Republican who opposes him.
Do you think that Musk can’t do that?
Think again. Look at the numbers:
The Key Factor to remember is that Musk has a fortune of $400 BILLION.
There are approximately 300 Republicans in Congress. If Musk spent $100 million to defeat each of those 300 Republicans, that would cost him only $30 billion, leaving Musk with $370 billion. He’d hardly miss the $30 billion.
Let’s say that Musk decided to spend $100,000,000 to defeat EVERY member of Congress, Republican and Democrat, and elect his own entire Congress. Well, there are 535 members of Congress in total, House and Senate: 535 times $100,000,000 to defeat each and elect Musk’s own toadies is still only $53.5 billion, leaving Musk still with $347 billion to also elect all the state governments that he wants.
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision put our republic up for sale, and megabillionaire Musk is buying it. He’s aiming to eliminate Medicare, Medicaid, Affordable Health Care Act health insurance, and Social Security.
Why? Because he can.
He can do anything he wants.
The so-called “Supreme Court” can’t stop him anymore than it could stop Andrew Jackson from ignoring the Court because the Court has NO ENFORCEMENT POWER: All enforcement power is in the Justice Department’s Marshalls’ Office, which, as Andrew Jackson knew — and as Trump knows today — is controlled by the President. Trump will eventually ignore the Supreme Court, just as Jackson did, and that will signal the end of The Great Experiment in democracy.
Our Founding Fathers never in their worst nightmare imagined that American voters would ever elect a total scofflaw as President. Now that has happened, the courts are powerless, Congress is cowed, and there is no constitutional remedy for this situation because our Founding Fathers never foresaw it happening.
We face the same situation today that our Founding Fathers faced in 1775, with an all-powerful king supported by a wealthy oligarchy of “nobles”.
What will we do?
Don’t hold your breath for things to turn around in the 2026 elections…there won’t be any.

I agree. However, “we the people” had a very rare chance to directly change the pro-oligarchy Supreme Court – change it IMMEDIATELY! – in 2016 when the Supreme Court was tied 4-4 with a vacant seat and too many voters – both on the right and the left – apparently decided they were good with the oligarchy.
It’s true that people who can get you to believe absurdities can get you to commit atrocities. And yet far too many folks have been tirelessly demanding we give legitimacy to absurdities spewed by those who hate Democrats – finding some tiny grain of truth and making absurd conclusions from them that are worthy of Hitler.
And one of those absurdities is the blatant lies that those who claimed to hate oligarchs repeated endlessly in 2016. That the Supreme Court doesn’t matter because there is no difference between the Dems and Republicans and having a 5-4 liberal Supreme Court led by RBG is no better than having a 5-4 right wing Supreme Court that supports Citizens United. And their most blatant lie: that keeping the Supreme Court 5-4 pro-oligarch, pro-enshrining Citizens United would “send a message” and lead to the nirvana of progressive ideas getting power. They were wrong.
I keep thinking of that situation in 2016. The Supreme Court is tied 4-4. RBG is still on the Court and ready to put her powerful influence and wise thinking to work repealing Citizens United IF she has a 5th liberal justice to work with. And we knew this! Just like the pro-oligarchs knew that their power was in grave danger because the very influential Justice Scalia died in office.
There was not a single pro-oligarchy voter who said “I won’t vote for the Republican president because it’s Scalia’s fault for dying instead of retiring years ago so I am fine with RBG leading a liberal majority.”
But there were too many false anti-oligarchy voters who got away with a total absurdity that it was “reasonable” to claim that they had a valid excuse in 2016 for not caring about changing the Supreme Court into an institution that limits the power of oligarchs instead of encouraging it! “I am justified in voting AGAINST the Democrat who would appoint the 5th Justice needed to limit the power of the oligarchs, because I hate that RBG is still on the court and fighting the oligarchy requires that we OPPOSE having the influential RBG leading a 5-4 majority in 2016!”
Absurdities that make so little sense that even Republican voters know better.
Why, just why, did some folks throw away that once in a generation chance in 2016? Maybe they secretly support oligarchy.
Because NO folks on the far right who supported oligarchy threw away that chance. Instead, they convinced some very gullible useful idiots on the left that throwing away that once in a generation chance to make things better for progressives was a “principled” stance. And then laughed at how easy it was (with help from their right wing billionaire/Russian pals).

TRUMP WILL IGNORE THE SUPREME COURT, TOO
The Constitutional Crisis isn’t in the near future — it began on February 14. Take a look:
So much for the federal courts. The Trump administration won’t obey the courts.
Trump keeps in the Oval Office a portrait of his role model: President Andrew Jackson, who told the U.S. Supreme Court to “shove it” when the Court ruled against him. The Court had ordered Jackson not to displace Native Americans from their tribal lands, but Jackson did it anyway, sending them on a death march that we know as “The Trail of Tears” and placing the survivors into concentration camps where more died.
The Court did nothing to Jackson because the Court CAN’T DO ANYTHING more than issue rulings and hope that honorable leaders will obey the court orders. The courts HAVE NO ENFORCEMENT POWER, except through the U.S. Justice Department, which Presidents control.
Congress, too, has no enforcement power. Congress can impeach a President, but a President like Trump can just ignore Congress. Anyway, today’s Congress won’t even begin to impeach Trump and has already abdicated legislative power to him.
The fact is that justice in America ENTIRELY DEPENDS on there being an honorable, law-abiding person sitting in the Oval Office. If there isn’t, there is no justice and the President is the only law. And that’s where America is today because Trump is already ignoring repeated federal court orders to restore grant spending.
When designing our government system, our Founding Fathers never even dreamed that American voters would ever elect a dishonorable, scofflaw, convicted criminal to be President of the United States, so our Founding Fathers didn’t design safeguards into the government for such a situation as we have today.
There are no constitutional solutions to this situation because even if Congress were to impeach Trump, he would ignore the impeachment just as he ignores the Supreme Court. If Trump, as Commander in Chief of the armed services, ordered martial law and the arrest of anyone who dissents, what would the military do? Remember all those right wing tattoos all over Defense Secretary Hegseth’s body? You will find the same tattoos on tens of thousands of active duty military men, as well as on police officers across the nation, all of them prepared to enforce Trump’s edicts when he declares Martial Law and suspends elections…remember that he told his MAGA Minions during his campaign that if they elect him, they will never have to vote again. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the 2026 elections to turn things around…there won’t be any elections.
Any solutions to this situation?

NYCPSP,
You have been on this blog for a long while and you know that I agree with you and agreed with you in 2016 when some people claimed it didn’t matter who won because Hillary was far from perfect.
What a different world it would be now if James Comey had not announced that he was reopening the FBI investigation into her emails, only about 10 days before the election. She was well ahead in the polls but her campaign was done in by Comey. Even though he cleared her of any wrongdoing a week later, it was too late.
In retrospect, her emails were a stupid issue because Trump and his buddies use private servers, unsecured cellphones, and he did collude with Putin.
So while you blame the leftists who wouldn’t deign to vote for an imperfect woman, I blame Comey.

nycpsp– You are somehow reducing the 2016 election to pro-/ anti- oligarch vote, focusing it on the empty seat in SCOTUS. “the blatant lies that those who claimed to hate oligarchs repeated endlessly in 2016. I think you must have followed all that very closely, so not saying you’re wrong: just reporting from the hinterlands of those who keep up fairly regularly that I don’t remember any of that! (Are you sure?)
My sense of the 2016 election was that voters—perhaps Dems more than Reps– were generally oblivious to the SCOTUS situation. Dems voted Dem, Reps voted Rep. Dems—thanks no doubt in part from Hillary’s campaigning choices– floundered just enough in battleground states to lose the election.
The overall turnout was good [7 million more than in previous, & highest at that point], although there surely were Dems stupid enough to sit home or vote 3rd party. And I think that now, after learning hard lessons from Mitch McConnell, Dems are more aware of the SCOTUS quotient connected to every election.
But I don’t get your pro-/anti-oligarchical analysis. IMHO, this should be an important focus for Dems going forward.
I participate in one JQPublic news platform [msn newsfeed] that is dominated about 75% by Reps (maybe 65% MAGAs, 35% tradl or libertarian conservatives). I have seen a remarkable change over the last couple of years. This is perhaps the only issue on which the nation’s halves are starting to come together. I hear less & less from old fogeys claiming the billionaires provide our jobs—more & more from JQP Reps/ conservatives who agree that the grossly-moneyed are screwing middle/ working classes.

Diane, I agree with you about Comey’s improper undermining of the Dem in 2016, which started earlier in 2016, when he gratuitously smeared her in his report in a way that implied she was guilty of a serious crime, but he was doing her a favor by not prosecuting her for that crime. So when Comey “re-opened” the email investigation 10 days before the election, he was adding potent fuel to the already raging fire he had improperly started months before.
But my post about the Supreme Court was in reply to quikwrit’s comment in the post that started this thread: “America has become an oligarchy because of the Supreme Court. Today’s Roberts Court will live in the same odious infamy as the Taney Court ….In its 2010 Citizens United ruling, the Roberts Court ruled that mere property is equal to a human being, leading to corporations being given the “human right” to pour unlimited dollars into America’s political system….”
The 2016 election was the one chance voters had to immediately change the pro-oligarch Supreme Court into one that limited the power of the oligarchs.
Voting for the Dem to fill the vacant seat should have been the most obvious no-brainer vote for anyone who wanted to limit the power of the oligarchy. It was a direct f-you to Mitch McConnell’s shenanigans! It was an immediate empowerment of RBG after her many decades in the minority! I concede the remote possibility that someone could believe there was no difference between the Dem and Republican, but if that’s really what they believed, they would have voted for the Democrat simply to have RBG finally get her majority to make progressive power more likely!
bethree, you wrote: “My sense of the 2016 election was that voters—perhaps Dems more than Reps– were generally oblivious to the SCOTUS situation.”
“oblivious”?
I had been voting in presidential elections for more than 30 years and while the Supreme Court was always a “potential” issue, 2016 was unprecedented: a vacant seat in a Supreme Court that was tied 4-4. A vacant seat at a time when the progressives knew how harmful the 2010 Citizens United decision was.
So I strongly disagree with your premise that voters on the left were “oblivious”. They knew about the open SC seat, but were propagandized into believing that it didn’t matter – that it was not important. Just like they were propagandized into believing that electing Trump – a man who was already spewing vile racist, anti-democratic rhetoric – was no worse than having a supposedly corporate Dem.
Plenty of Democrats, including the candidate, talked about the SC, but everything but “her emails” was drowned out by the media and the candidate got blamed for “not getting her message through” by pundits and overpaid Dem consultants who intentionally shut down any talk of why her message didn’t get through.
When I ask why those on the left who decried the power of the oligarchs would intentionally choose to keep those oligarchs in power by spurning a once in a generation chance to have the Supreme Court on their side instead of on the oligarchs’ side, I never get a good answer. When I ask why those on the left were so motivated to blow off this once in a generation chance that they spent endless effort to convince other progressive voters to join them in keeping the Supreme Court pro-oligarch, I never get a good answer.
Apparently, they’d rather have the Dems lose and the oligarchs keep the Supreme Court, then have the Dems win and have the oligarchs lose the Supreme Court. And they got their wish. The oligarchs owe them a big thank you. Because even democracy holds for 4 years and the Republicans are defeated, the Supreme Court will be in the hands of the oligarchy for a long, long time.

Arguably it was merely the final, official imprimatur on an ongoing erosion in campaign donation regulation, caused by a glut of $$ — the burgeoning oligarchy. $$, like water when built up at a height, seeks profitable distribution lower down (govt policy). Similar to its antecedent, the 1999 repeal of most of 1933’s Glass-Steagall Act (replaced by Gramm-Leach-Bliley). The steady undermining of Glass-Steagall’s separation of commercial from investment banking began in serious in the late 1970’s. Thank you and I agree with your excellent analysis and would offer one point to consider. You seem to imply that the oligarchy was somehow installed against the wishes of voters. This is the real insidious part; through a concerted effort to barrage people with years of Russian agitprop gullible voters fed on FOX/Kremlin disinformation actually advocated for the oligarchy. For young people DOGE is marketed as “edgy” and modern while to oldies it represents comeuppance at last for the “librul elite”. When you write “Ordinary folk who have no clue what the word “oligarchy” means have nonetheless long recognized the fact that their government is no longer by and for We the People…” The “ordinary folk” in the Russia Republican Party do NOT recognize this. They believe the chainsaw-wielding Nazi IS for We the People. My point is the time for unification is gone. These are cult freaks bent on destroying our Constitution with violence if necessary because it’s too hard for them to understand. The long-racist Republicans weren’t duped. They chose to try to destroy our country rather than accept the inevitability and beauty of a multi-racial modern democracy.

There is self-censorship going on in the former mainstream media. Case in point: I saw an interview with a Trump official on a video today in which an official was being interviewed on CNN. He was free during this interview to lay out a false picture of Trump’s position without any challenge to what amounted to gaslighting. Why would CNN do that? Either they did not want to be shunned for future interviews or they actually agreed that Zelenskyy was responsible for the Ukraine conflict.
Either way, we are robbed of the clear picture.

This is that “million little cuts” strategy, either intentionally or not, that occurred in Germany in the lead up to, and aftermath of the Nazi’s rise to power. There were so many small acts committed, so quickly, that the populace couldn’t process everything quickly enough or united enough to rise up & resist what was happening. Some people understood early on, others just said they were being alarmist, and others were oblivious because they were just trying to get by during those difficult Depression days & post WW1 reparations that devastated their country. Sadly, we don’t have anything close to that suffering, besides egg & gas prices being too high, yet the Maga faithful are so easily misled & gaslighted about things that will truly affect them for the worse, so they still vote against their own best interests.
If you want to get to the essence of what is going on between Trump, Republicans, Putin & Russia, give this a watch. Jon Stewart & The Daily Show are more informative about what goes on in the country & world than mainstream media. The corporate controlled media have to watch out how far they actually can go in criticizing or pointing out things like the Nazi references that Righties are using more & more prominently.
