Mary Trump, Donald’s estranged niece, asks an important question: Why did the U.S. Army decide not to bring charges against Donald Trump for law-breaking? He knew that it was illegal to bring cameras into Arlington National Cemetery; he knew it was illegal to stage a campaign event there. When the aide on duty reminded his crew not to break the law, they shoved her aside and ridiculed her. I assume the Department of the Army is acting out of self-interest. Those who made the decision know that if Trump is re-elected, he will wreak vengeance on them.
Donald Trump and his minions were warned against politicizing a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. They did it anyway, violating self-evident norms and the law: military cemeteries cannot be used to stage partisan political events. When it became clear that Donald’s staff was going to ignore this prohibition, an employee at the cemetery sought to restrict photography in accordance with federal regulations.
Arlington is “the final resting place of more than 400,000 U.S. troops, veterans and family members. Donald was there to mark the third anniversary of a suicide bombing that killed 13 U.S. troops during the evacuation of Afghanistan,” an anniversary he did not see fit to commemorate in 2023 or 2022.
Cemetery staff had made it clear ahead of time that official photography was not allowed in Section 60, where veterans of recent wars are buried. When the employee sought to reinforce the guidelines, she was, according to a report released by the Army, “abruptly pushed aside” by people in Donald’s entourage. The last part should surprise no one. Donald is a foppish, chubby overlord who relies on the unquestioning thuggery of the conscienceless jackals who comprise his inner circle and staff who exist to make him look tough. For him, “toughness” means being an unrepentant asshole; people in his orbit simply follow his lead.
Arlington National Cemetery is run by the Army. The woman who tried to make sure the guidelines, and the law, were followed by Donald’s team, is employed by the Army. After the altercation with members of Donald’s staff, she filed a report. It’s understandable that she does not want to press charges—after all, she remains unidentified because of concerns for her safety—but why won’t the Army? What exactly is gained by allowing this act of desecration to go unpunished? And, by the way, engaging in the kind of behavior Donald and his campaign staff engaged in isn’t simply indecent, it’s illegal. So why is the convicted felon allowed to commit more crimes with impunity?
But let’s summon the will to be shocked, shall we? Let’s be shocked that the former Commander-in Chief is such a despicable narcissist that every interaction he has with service members is simply a means simultaneously to steal their honor while denigrating them.
Is this the worst thing Donald’s ever done? Not by a long-shot. But the combination of selfishness, thuggery, menace, and his willingness to bring the entire weight of his power to bear on a private American citizen is a pretty good encapsulation of everything that is wrong with and disqualifying about him.
It’s time for corporate media to catch up and refuse to let this one go.

It’s sad that we have to go to the depths of social media to get this truth while the so called legacy media simply focuses on perception. Trump brazenly broke the law. He has gotten away with this all of his adult life and authorities simply seem more concerned with the hassle of holding him accountable. The U.S. Defense Department should bring charges. They have the evidence on tape. They have the campaign ads in clear sight. From the almost daily breaking of the Hatch Act to the clamoring for nonexistent votes, the Trump administration has been nothing short of a criminal enterprise. Yet, the so called “rule of law” is treated by authorities as an inconvenience. Statutes only get enforced if the criminal has no power. This may be Trump’s worst legacy. As long as you are rich, hold the reins of power, or just treat everyone else like dirt, you can pretty much do whatever you like.

Legacy media (the so-called “liberal” media):
“Partisan Democrats who hate Trump say he broke the law. Trump says he didn’t. No one knows, because both sides are equally credible. Or – to be more accurate – the partisan Democrat side should be viewed with skepticism always, but Trump may or may not be saying accurate things and we just don’t have enough information to know.”

The answer would seem to be that the Army wants to appear to be out of the business of taking political sides. Trump and the right wing in general has made doing this sort of thing normal. Our right wing leadership continues down the road of normalizing behaviors that used to be political suicide or to produce legal harm.

Roy,
Enforcing the law is not “taking sides.” The law should be enforced without fear or favor.

I could not agree more. I am just trying to guess why the Army may have tried to be quiet about this.

Because the Army is afraid of what Trump might do to their budget if he wins.

I think we have all heard of “too big to fail.”
With Traitor Trump, the same rule may apply but for being “too big to prosecute,” except in New York state where the state probably feels guilty for letting him get away with many crimes for decades.
Still, Traitor Trump’s “too big to prosecute” has nothing to do with how much his companies are worth and how many employees they employ and cheat.
Traitor Trump’s “too big to persecute” has to do with the size of MAGA. MAGA is a fanatical and dangerous violent cult.
If we go just with the US popularity rating for MAGA as reported by NBC News in 2023, that number is 24% of a population of more than 330,000,000. About the same number that voted for Traitor Trump in 2020.
Some of them were even willing to attack our capital on January 6, 2024, in an attempt to overthrow our government and replace it with a dictator Traitor Trump.
So, “too be to prosecute” outside of New York state means fear of more violence, fear of cities burning, fear of anyone who isn’t a MAGA cult fanatic being targeted for threats and violence.
Instead, it seems that those in power, who are not members of the MAGA cult, have decided to gamble they can beat Traitor Trump at the polls in November and that with a majority in both houses of Congress they will have the votes to block Traitor Trump fanatics like MTG from getting in the way of justice for the traitor.

Prosecution might depend on the military aide (who was shoved by Corey L, DT’s enforcer) pressing charges, and she doesn’t want to because she fears for her safety if she does. I think the military should offer her full protection, however. This is a shameful incident.

Exactly. It’s amazing how much Trump has turned the Republican Party into an organization similar to the mob, where people fear for their well-being if they cross him. There really is no comparison to any major political party I can think of in my lifetime, in the US. Much closer to what it is like in Russia under Putin. Or any authoritarian state.
It appears that the media is becoming just as cowed here as in authoritarian states, too.
What’s most frightening is that Trump and the Republicans ALREADY have this power to frighten folks – despite the Democrats still having the presidency and the tie+VP advantage in the Senate. It’s going to get extremely ugly if the Republicans also have the presidency and Senate, given how scary it is when they don’t even control them.

Tell trump he “can’t” and he “will”. Nothing new! Just more oppositional-defiant behavior from a toddler man-boy. A trump stunt to rile up the Dems….even if it was illegal/immoral/amoral. He’s baiting and waiting and the Dems need to tread carefully in response.

Harris and Walz have been brilliant in their refusal to respond to Trump’s insults. It must be driving him nuts.

But even refusing to respond gets spinned by the so-called liberal media in a negative way. This is why Kamala should not do interviews.
CNN’s Dana Bash asked Kamala to respond to Trump’s statement that she had “suddenly turned Black”.
Politico headline:
‘Next question’: Harris evades questions about her identity
EVADES???!!!!
After objections from media critics, Politico changed it to:
Harris sidesteps the spotlight when it comes to her identity
SIDESTEPS? It’s barely “neutral” – in my opinion more negative than neutral
An article in Daily Kos points out reasonable alternatives that the media will never use because reporting the truth is too “biased” against Trump.
“A “neutral” headline:
A headline with a little bit more truth-telling:
Harris deems Trump’s racist comments on her identity unworthy of a response
Note those above were NOT headlines used when the media spins for the Republicans.

I also think the so-called debate is predictable and seems like it’s going to be just another Trump dog and pony show. He’ll firehose her with lies and innuendo and she’ll probably feel overwhelmed by it, which is the Trump plan. One doesn’t know where to start.
I dread it and think no good can come from it. And the press is advertising it like it’s a staged Roman Coliseum event of sorts.
No one expects reasonability from the Trump side–and that’s to her disadvantage since she’s used to the no-nonsense context and mediating power of a law court.
Trump is the closest thing to a cancerous tumor on the body politic that one can be without actually being one. CBK

If she is overwhelmed by Trump’s spewing of lies and BS, she will not have learned anything from Biden’s debate with Trump. She should quickly call out the most outrageous thing he says (and this technique he uses) and then use her time to talk about the way she plans to approach the presidency. Just because he talks doesn’t mean she has to respond to it all. I’m hoping she shows no fear of him, stands her OWN ground, and doesn’t let him get to her psychologically. This is her time to stand up to a bully. If she can’t, she shouldn’t be president.

Hello Mamie: Harris has already shown that she CAN stand up to several kinds of power-mongers and bullies; and that she knows how to “container” a rabbit-hole argument, and then coast right past it.
However, this also will be a bit different; and because of its circus-like quality, and the fact that so many already have the debate “in the bag” for her and are saying to Trump “just wait, you are in for it, Trumpty Dumpty,” makes for red flags in the run up to the debate.
I hope Trump will find a “reason” to back out. I have great confidence in her ability to handle the job of president; but I wouldn’t put ANYTHING past him, especially if he has actually realized that he might lose and he doesn’t have a Sharpie big enough to fix it. CBK

I read somewhere that although it’s unlawful to use Section 60 for political purposes, there is no formal punishment on the books. My guess is no one else has been so egregious as to violate this hallowed (not hollowed!) space, so consequences haven’t previously been necessary.
