In true Broadie style, Houston Superintendent Mike Miles removed two elementary principals only days before the start of school. He started his job of “reforming” the Houston public schools in June, so he obviously did not observe either of them. This is disruption to the max. Teachers and parents learned about this abrupt action through an automated phone call.

Parents and teachers at Stevens say they were “blindsided” by the announcement, which was made via an automated phone call.
“This unexpected and impersonal communication from the district caused immediate anxiety, confusion and fear, not just for me personally but among hundreds of parents,” said Adam Chaney, the parliamentarian for Stevens’ Parent Teacher Community Organization.
“Our community deserves clarification immediately. We are two days away from ‘Meet the Teacher,’ the whole campus is going to be present, and then Monday morning is the start of school,” Chaney said. “It’s become increasingly difficult to avoid interpreting this chaotic situation through the lens of this controversial takeover.”
HISD officials declined to comment further or provide a reason for the reassignments, saying that the district cannot comment on ongoing personnel matters. The call Stevens parents received Wednesday acknowledged that “the change may feel abrupt,” but that it had “become clear that this change is necessary to ensure Stevens Elementary students start the year off well with access to high-quality instruction on day one that meets their needs and supports increased academic outcomes on the campus…”
Trent’s abrupt removal has led members of the Stevens community to speculate that she was reassigned because she did not opt in to Superintendent Mike Miles’ New Education System earlier this summer.
One teacher, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, said Trent resisted pushes from the HISD central office to become an NES-aligned school, which would have seen many of Miles’ most sweeping and controversial reforms implemented at Stevens.
Miles also disbanded the HISD team of autism specialists who served schools throughout the district.

Kudos to you for posting pictures of the two removed educational leaders. If we use our critical thinking caps, we can perhaps discern why these two leaders were removed from their positions. As for the disbanded special educators, perhaps Miles does not that believe these classified young people have a chance of being ‘career ready.’ unless they have Asperger’s like a student I know on the spectrum that has an IQ of 156. What Miles is doing is in violation of IDEA, which Texas has been repeatedly named for violating. https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/01/11/577400134/texas-violates-federal-law-education-department-finds#:~:text=By%20setting%20an%20enrollment%20target,after%20a%2015%2Dmonth%20investigation.

Great observation. It made me think of this and how kids deserve the right person in their lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHw48FQHaZ0

Blame this squarely on Texas voters. Apparently low taxes and minimal regulation are more important then humane values.

You hit the nail on the head.

Will those children who need the services of the autism specialists still be in school by the time the justice system works in their favor? Seems to me there are a lot of bad actors who depend on the glacially slow judicial process. Does anyone in particular spring to mind?

Another instance of alt-right administration and “governance” decapitating public school systems, to no one’s benefit, certainly not the kids’.

Miles is a fascist, self- glorifying, egotistical dictator. If you dare to disagree with him, you will pay the consequences if he has anything to say about it. Every district in which he has influence has ended in disarray.

Even retired, the Air Force could call back Miles to active duty, because he was an officer and court martial him for what he’s doing now. If found guilty, he might be reduced in rank and even lose his retirement … if he has retirement.
Former “colonel Miles was the maintenance group commander since 2016. Both were near-decade-long veterans of the Air Force’s F-35A Lightning II program and integral in the wing’s stand-up milestones and first combat deployments.”
Colonels that never make general are usually not considered material for being a general and get out early.
I’m not sure if Miles served a full 20 years (or more) to qualify for an early retirement. I didn’t want to take the time to find that out. If he left before reaching 20 years, it was because the Air Force let him go as an undesirable who might have embarrassed the Air Force if allowed to stay in based on previous behavior and conduct that would probably remain classified. Every branch of the military hides dirt to avoid bad press and being embarrassed, a PR nightmare. Getting rid of undesirables is preferred before they really mess up.
If anyone finds out how many years Miles served active before leaving the Air Force, please let me know. I’m curious.

Miles actions are no different what is happening in other school districts across Texaas. My son-in-law is a teacher in El Paso. Teachers and most Principals do not know from day to day, week to week what is going to happen and what changes that are going to be made in the last minute. Teachers are confused. Principals are trying to figure out how to keep the schools on an even keel. The school boat is rocking so bad on any given day that some professional are simply abandoning the ship to save their sanity.

Miles fired two African American women who disagreed with him.
What a courageous military man.

The only thing these Broadies understand is money and test scores. Parents should refuse to send their kids to school, thereby denying him money.
The other thing is to hold your children out on STAAR test days.
This will get his attention. Otherwise, you can just expect more of this.

I have had my own encounters with superintendent hubris. It’s a total abuse of the position and the children we are supposed to serve. The Broad virus is not only virulent but many who follow that mantra want it to be existential.

I don’t know the rationale or details that led to this action but the timing and communication process could not have been worse.
