Donald Trump said many times when he was running for president in 2016 that anyone who takes the Fifth Amendment is guilty.
Yesterday, when questioned by New York state investigators about the practices of the Trump Organization, he repeatedly took the Fifth.
The state is investigating whether he manipulated the value of his properties to lower his taxes, then inflated their value to sell them.
The Boston Globe offered Trump’s explanation for his silence:
NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump invoked the Fifth Amendment and wouldn’t answer questions under oath in the New York attorney general’s long-running civil investigation into his business dealings, the former president said in a statement Wednesday.
Trump arrived at state Attorney General Letitia James’ offices in a motorcade shortly before 9 a.m., before announcing more than an hour later that he “declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution.”
“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question,” the statement said. “When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the Fake News Media, you have no choice…”
James, a Democrat, has said in court filings that her office has uncovered “significant” evidence that Trump’s company “used fraudulent or misleading asset valuations to obtain a host of economic benefits, including loans, insurance coverage, and tax deductions.”
James alleges the Trump Organization exaggerated the value of its holdings to impress lenders or misstated what land was worth to slash its tax burden, pointing to annual financial statements given to banks to secure favorable loan terms and to financial magazines to justify Trump’s place among the world’s billionaires.
The company even exaggerated the size of Trump’s Manhattan penthouse, saying it was nearly three times its actual size — a difference in value of about $200 million, James’ office said.
Trump has denied the allegations, contending that seeking the best valuations is a common practice in the real estate industry. He says James’ investigation is politically motivated and that her office is “doing everything within their corrupt discretion to interfere with my business relationships, and with the political process.” He’s also accused James, who is Black, of racism in pursuing the investigation.
I submit that the Boston Globe has reported not on why Trump took the Fifth, but on his lies about why he took the Fifth.
Well observed, Bill.
Trump has gone from invoking the Fifth Avenue to invoking the Fifth Amendment
“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK?”
Invoking the Fifth
Trump once bragged
Invoked the Fifth
Now he’s tagged
And zips his lips
When the day comes that Trump finally passes from the Earth, as all of us eventually will, I have this suggestion for his tombstone:
Here lies Donald Trump,
but that’s nothing new.
I think that wherever the traitor is put to rest, nothing will grow for eternity. That spot of land will be cursed, toxic, and sterile. The Earth would be a safer place if his ashes were shot into the sun.
Hmm, on second thought, that might be a bad idea. The next day, the sun might burn out from all of the lies it would have to digest.
Too shay!
Trumpitaph
Trump was lying
In the past
But his dying
Makes it last
Here lies President
Trump, it’s true
But, as precedent
Nothing new
Trumpstone
No collusion!
No spaghetti!!
No confusion!!!
Genius, steady!!!!
He followed the advice of his lawyers, the political question, and all politics is local, is whether Trump’s legal issues are strengthening or weakening his political powers … will Republicans, dominated by Trump, control Congress after November? If yes, the Trump campaign in 24 is off and running
He may announce before November. The raid has unified and emboldened his base and terrified the Senators. The base say they are “locked and loaded.”
I fear that Garland will take the reaction as a signal that he shouldn’t go further with Trump than to bring charges regarding documents. And the Pugs are kicking up as much fuss as possible precisely to drive that result. For the crime of improperly removing the documents, he gets no jail time. He just gets prevented from running again. So, the Teflon Don gets a pass again because that’s Just Us in America.
Don’t forget that Garland ordered the seizure of John Eastman’s cell phone and an FBI raid on his home. And the FBI took away Rep Scott Perry’s cell, the guy who tried to get Trump to make Jeffrey Clark the Attorney General to harass state officials.
Merrick Garland is doing his job.
Another 3-word mantra:
Ditch the Witch!
You can fool some of the Trumpers all of the time,
And all of the Trumpers all of the time
Just keep repeating there was no crime.
It’s time to Drain the Swamp of all their slime.
More Trump BABBLE….GUILTY as charged !!!
If former president says he took the 5th, he is lying. First of all, do not think for a moment that when former president is asked a question, he DECLINES TO ANSWER instead of giving a four hour long, rambling response about how the Democrats are injecting bleach and ketchup on the White House walls is beautiful and you’re gonna love it. Former president does not decline to answer. Second, advice to plead the 5th must have come from a reasonable attorney, and former president does not TAKE LEVELHEADED ADVICE. Period. Therefore, third, to refer to the 5th Amendment, former president has to take his own advice, meaning that he has to KNOW PART OF THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. he does not. Former president did not take the 5th. It’s not his style, What he took was a limp swing at someone.
Maybe he meant be took Fifth Avenue to the questioning.
Fifth Avenue is where he goes to kill someone and get away with it, so that would make sense because he is definitely a man of habit. Speaking of his habits, he might have meant he took a fifth Quarter Pounder. He is also always trying to prove he’s a stable genius who can say, “Person, woman, man, camera, tv,” so he might have meant he took the 5th grade. One never knows with him, does one. Covfefe.
I hope they’re collaborating with Scottish authorities, because I understand they have some of the same concerns.
