PBS ran a special about the love affair between America’s far-right extremists and Hungary’s authoritarian leader Viktor Orban. Here is the transcript. It’s worth reading to understand the extremism and not-so-latent fascism embedded in America’s right wing.

I heard a Republican on the news trying to explain the ideological shift in the party. He stated that Republicans used to be the party of small government, Now, he said, they want to be the party that gets things done. It seems the swiftest route to “getting things done” is authoritarianism. There are no checks or balances on power and little debate, when top down decisions are made. The job of the people then is to simply obey, or suffer the consequences. Authoritarianism is in direct conflict with The Constitution, but the tone deaf right wing Christians appear to be embracing plans that not only conflict with the law of the land, but also The Bible. As for Mr. Orban who believes, “A Christian politician cannot be racist,” it seems that a lot of people on the right agree with him.

makes me think of famous fascist leaders who “got the trains to run on time” just before they also categorized, maligned and attacked large swaths of their own society

Mussolini actually didn’t accomplish this.
Yeah, authoritarians can shout orders, and people can, trembling, try to obey them, but such governments breed cynicism and subversion and bribery and kleptocratic behavior from top to bottom. And everyone is afraid to tell the boss when he or she is wrong. So, things fall apart pretty quickly. Mussolini’s rule was a nightmare for Italy. And things were good for some Germans under Hitler only at the very beginning, when Hitler was borrowing heavily to finance big projects–roads and armaments, cars and buildings. Shortly into his spendthrift reign, he was so heavily in debt that he had to invade other countries to loot them so he could meet his obligations.

Far right extremists in the US are the same as fascists the world over. Fascists are not far right conservatives. Fascist are way more dangerous.

So-called “Christian Nationalism” that Orban calls appeals to is the Deceiver’s anti-Christ scheme to discredit genuine Christianity.
The message of “Christian Nationalism” is hate and conflict, which is the direct opposite of the message of Jesus, which is love and reconciliation.

So true. The sad reality is that these Christian Nationalists cannot see their own hypocrisy.

GOP Jesus in Kentucky- U.S. theocracy-
Kentucky’s political “Super Bowl” is a picnic in the rural town of Fancy Farm, Kentucky. It, is described as one of the most, if not the most, consequential political event in the state. It is a fundraiser for a local Catholic elementary school. The picnic’s attendance is 12,000-15,000 people.
Btw, I have posted before that media identify the VP of EdChoice Ky. as also the associate director of the Kentucky Catholic Conference.
The picnic was at one-time, bi-partisan, attracting statewide candidates and, on occasion, national candidates. The event held last weekend had 9 GOP candidates and only 3 Democrats. If the U.S. House changes to Republican in 2022, Ky. Rep. James Comer will likely head the House Oversight Committee. He spoke at the event as did the female face of Ky. Right to Life.
