When you think of the late 1940s, do you think about President Truman?
Here is an educational film from 1947: “Are You Popular?” The lesson: Don’t park in cars with boys.
These short films were called “social guidance” films. They were shown to students in schools.
Gee, would’ja meet me backstage to discuss the props? LOL
That was painful.
We watched that film in home economics. How depressing.
“Wally has used a lot of common sense in putting the invitation this way. It shows he has thought about what Caroline might like. And he has implied his …PRICE RANGE… so she has some idea what he can afford when she makes his choice.”
“Caroline and her mother have found one way a girl can repay a boy a boy for entertaining her – a bite to eat at her house will save him some money.”
Maybe she should have gone on the date Jerry instead. She may not have to worry so much about $$. (he, he)
I suspect that even in the 1940s, teens required to watch these “educational” films were sitting in the back laughing at how old fashioned they were.
In my day (late1970s), we had to watch films warning of the dangers of drug abuse! I seem to recall a talking hot dog haunting the brain of a hapless teen who had taken LSD or maybe just smoked marijuana.
^^okay, google is an amazing thing and I was able to watch the hotdog film again. Which reminded me that in high school, this film was so beloved that younger students could not wait to be old enough for their grade to enjoy the beloved classic. And I have to say, it stands up to the hype. Three classic minutes of “drug abuse education” that gave mirth to millions of teens.
I’m very happy to say I was three years old when this came out. Never saw it in school.
I was three years old also and never watched it in school. Those “actors” are, or would be over 90 today. My aunt graduated high school in 1947 and if alive, would be 92.
Well sht, if yer just gonna idealise away the meaning of life…… what then do you think will happen?
Looks like vimo users are into monetizing public domain materials. All these old flicks are in the public archives btw. I forget the url just at the moment. I find it easily by searching: “a boy and his dog” +archives. There’s about a decade of public service anouncments public school messages linked end to end. Conspicuously also a boy and his dog, so take that however you like.
I notice there are no positive comments….a certain amount of this stuff in the curriculum might lead a parent to look for an alternative school with a more robust curriculum.
I was in the Air Force from 1962-66, and we were subjected to similar videos about venereal disease; probably holdovers from WW II. There were other “videos” also, such as how to conduct ourselves in certain situations. We watched these trying to keep a straight face also.
Ya, but, hookers do in fact account for a large percent of garrison casualties. Seen quite a few take the green mile walk after an hiv test.
