This story has justifiably gotten a lot of national attention. Tim Boyd, the mayor of Colorado City, Texas, resigned after posting the following message on his Facebook page. He has a philosophy of sink or swim. That Government has no responsibility to help you when the power goes out and the temperature goes below freezing. Surviving is your problem.
That worldview sounds like it derives from the late Rush Limbaugh. It is certainly not consonant with the core values embedded in the Holy Bible. I’m guessing ex-Mayor Boyd considers himself a Christian. From what I know of the words of Jesus, he taught love and kindness for one’s neighbors, not indifference.
For non-Christians, there is another source for believing that government has an obligation to help its citizens: the United States Constitution, which begins: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
”Providing for the general welfare” is a commitment that society makes to its citizens.
And then there’s the basic fact that the government in most parts of this country does control the power grid and the water supply. Texans should rightly hold their state government responsible for the lack of both. Individuals and families can burn wood in their fireplaces, if they have one, and they can draw water from a well, but most people don’t have a well. People in civilized societies pay taxes so the government will protect them, build roads, supply electrical power and potable water, provide free public education, and do those things that individuals can’t do for themselves.
When their lives are at risk because of a natural disaster, they rightly turn to government for help. At times of overwhelming crisis, only government has the resources and personnel (think National Guard) to save lives.
This is what ex-Mayor Boyd wrote, along with his sort-of apology:

No one owes you are (sic) your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim it’s your choice! If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm and safe. If you have no water you deal without and think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family. If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are sitting there waiting for someone to come rescue you because your (sic) lazy is direct result of your raising! Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish (sic). Folks God has given us the tools to support ourselves in times like this. This is sadly a product of socialist government where they feed people to believe that the FEW will work and others will become dependent for handouts. Am I sorry that you have been dealing without electricity and water; yes! But I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves! We have lost sight of those in need and those that take advantage of the system and meshed them in to one group!! Bottom line quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family!

All, I have set back and watched all this escalating and have tried to keep my mouth shut! I won’t deny for one minute what I said in my post this morning. Believe me when I say that many of the things I said were taken out of context and some of which were said without putting much thought in to it. I would never want to hurt the elderly or anyone that is in true need of help to be left to fend for themselves. I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout. I apologize for the wording and some of the phrases that were used! I had already turned in my resignation and had not signed up to run for mayor again on the deadline that was February 12th! I spoke some of this out of the anger that the city and county was catching for situations which were out of their control. Please understand if I had it to do over again I would have just kept my words to myself and if I did say them I would have used better wording and been more descriptive.
The anger and harassment you have caused my wife and family is so undeserved….my wife was laid off of her job based off the association people gave to her and the business she worked for. She’s a very good person and was only defending me! But her to have to get fired from her job over things I said out of context is so horrible. I admit, there are things that are said all the time that I don’t agree with; but I would never harass you or your family to the point that they would lose there livelihood such as a form of income.
I ask that you each understand I never meant to speak for the city of Colorado City or Mitchell county! I was speaking as a citizen as I am NOT THE MAYOR anymore. I apologize for the wording and ask that you please not harass myself or my family anymore!
Threatening our lives with comments and messages is a horrible thing to have to wonder about. I won’t share any of those messages from those names as I feel they know who they are and hope after they see this they will retract the hateful things they have said!

Often ignored, the general welfare clause in the Preamble, is the constitutional reason we can get closer to the good society. Rand Paul and many in the Republican Party ignore it, using propaganda as though it professes Socialism or Communism. I guess the framers were Socialists and/or Communists. One thing for sure, autocracy was something they didn’t like and the Constitution is a document that has allowed us to try to eliminate. Then along comes 45 and his political party.
Selectively ignoring parts of the Constitution one doesn’t like or making spurious arguments about it that are not grounded in fact, history or logic is a required prerequisite to be a Republican today. Indeed, it their core principle.
While he’s at it, he needs to stop eating FDA approved foods or purchasing things shipped on public roads. He can certainly fend for himself all he wants.
I don’t know why he ran for mayor since he doesn’t want to help anybody.

The Constitution was established to set the parameters by which the general welfare of the people would be established (promoted, not provided as you misquoted). It does not say that the government is responsible for the general welfare. If you’re hanging your hopes on the government fixing the problem and coming up with a better solution you’re going to be waiting a long time…

To add to my comment above, note the fraudulent (was going to use the word spurious again, but decided to stretch my vocabulary) divorcing of the terms “established” and “promoted” above. It is implicit that if one is to establish something, certain things must be promoted, i.e., created and fostered.

I don’t get how Republicans view themselves as patriots when they openly despise our government, and why they run for office to participate in running a government that they openly despise. Same concept as how a mob of violent thugs professed themselves patriots and shouted “USA!” as they tried to overthrow the government (while also attacking police with flagpoles bearing “Thin Blue Line” flags). Can anyone explain?

It says, “provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;” In other words, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA are constitutional and so would universal healthcare be if we ever came to our senses in this country. Public education is free at the point of entry to all children, rich or poor, it’s funded by local taxes.
Where in the Constitution does it codify privatization of all things public? That’s the road we are on. When we privatize essential services, we are no longer serving the general welfare directly. The only public involvement is the money that comes from the tax dollars. The public has no say in the implementation of the service. That sounds like taxation without representation to me.
Yet Mr Boyd, [former] Mayor claims ” The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!” That the pact with govt & service providers does not even meet the simple basics of contract law.
I seriously doubt Tim Boyd has ever read the works of people like Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau on the social contract, but Boyd probably heard the words somewhere and believes it’s the “Socialist” (aka Commie) contract.

ecms principal: I second Greg on this. “The Constitution was established to set the parameters by which” [the general welfare of the people would be promoted, etc] is an interpretation, arguably correct, but not a limit on or even description of how general welfare will be promoted, just a statement that this is the mechanism to be used. The government is the people; the people will decide to what degree and the manner in which they will promote their general welfare as their society evolves, through laws. The Constitution provides parameters for the goals to be pursued, and the manner in which laws are to be enacted.
Mr. Boyd’s original comment expresses all too well the view of those who dominate one of our two major political parties. It’s a less sophisticated version of Majority Leader Mc Connell’s longer speech, excoriating past-president Trump and his behavior, but saying there’s nothing we can do about it. Treason–there’s nothing we can do about it…minimum wage too low, but we shouldn’t raise it. Pandemic? Find your own vaccine or gargle something. Homeless? Should have saved your money, worked harder in school, been born into a wealthier family. Etc. Pres. Harding is said to have said, “The business of America is business.” Sadly, those dominating his party today seem to follow that philosophy still–if it doesn’t make a profit for some wealthy investors, it doesn’t matter. Luckily, most Americans don’t agree with this “rugged individualism,” which can indeed be rugged when help is most needed. So, luckily, we chosen a government which seems to be putting government to work to “promote the general welfare.”

I heard Beau of the Fifth Column read it out a few days ago and was appalled. I mean, I’m sure there’s some snotty rich folks who have their own resources and think it, but to have someone go say it, on social media, for the world to read?
Wonder what it says about him that the man can’t use contractions or doesn’t recognize homonyms. Guess he wouldn’t get off his lazy ass and pay attention in Spelling and Literature Arts in school, so he sank, right?
He says everyone took him out of context. Uh, no, I think he made his position quite clear, crap spelling and all. He didn’t sign on for a crisis like this, apparently, and he sank in his duties to his town. He didn’t stand up and be a leader, he threw some shade and walked away from a job people voted him into (guess he won’t have to worry about the stress of re-election campaigns after this).
You’re right that Texas constituents have the right to be angry. It’s not a handout. The infrastructure and grid are supposed to be or everybody. They built a system that we depend on for work, home, life in general and then let it go to crap. When that sort of thing fails, it’s the government’s job. The average home-owner doesn’t have a plumber’s degree. They don’t have the means to walk into a water plant and find out what’s going on. They can’t repair the power lines as they go out.
I feel bad for that town because in a moment of crisis, their elected leader abandoned them and then tried to backtrack his words as his resignation was being processed. He’s a first class idiot, and I’m sure til the roads and everything are taken care of, he’s not going anywhere, anyway, and gonna have to soak up all the vitriol his lashing out created.
For extra karma, I hope whoever works the utilities and services and gets them back online gets to his place LAST.

I didn’t deign to say anything about the former mayor’s lack of spelling, grammar or syntax.
I found it amusing that he suggested that the general public get off their lazy asses, think outside the box, and fend for themselves. You would think that a situation like this one, you should be able to expect your government to get off their lazy asses and think outside the box. Telling individual citizens to take care of themselves when communal action is what is needed seems like dereliction of duty. Shouldn’t we expect government officials to jump in and coordinate resources rather than just tell people to “figure it out?”
Boyd was forced to resign after writing a mea culpa apology to his constituents. Boyd like so many red state leaders has been poisoned by the libertarian belief of individualism. He does not have empathy for those in crisis from a natural event. The same can be said for Trump’s unsympathetic response to the victims of Covid. Conservative thinking blames the poor for their poverty and inability to solve their problems. In many cases solving problems in a natural crisis takes resources that the poor do not have. They do not have the money to keep themselves and their families safe in a crisis. Too many conservatives would rather judge than lend a helping hand. They see kindness and service as a weakness, not a function of government.
Ted Cruz was recently taken to the woodshed for abandoning the freezing people in Texas while he and his family escaped to Cancun. Ted Cruz and AOC have had a running feud since she arrived on Capitol Hill. Cruz immediately tried to bully her, but AOC is no shrinking violet. She gave it right back to him. AOC raised $2 million dollars in twenty-four hours to help the people in Houston. She is flying to Houston to deliver the money to Rep. Sylvia Garcia. This is a smart move to reach out to the people of Houston, a Democratic stronghold in Texas. A bonus is it will also annoy Ted Cruz. It is a winning strategy for AOC and the Democrats.AOC will be the coup de grace for Cruz in Texas. I find it fascinating that Elon Musk is moving production to Texas…land of the Libertarians and Home of the US Oil Industry. A producer of eco friendly, electric cars partaking of the low tax rate and a state run on its reliance/profits of fossil fuels…..makes me scratch my head? Is he part of the problem or is he trying to solve the problem.
Texas is very business friendly, and there is no state income tax. I am sure this is part of the draw for Musk to move to the state. Texas is also the home NASA so it has a ready supply of aerospace engineers.
It is interesting how far reaching the effects of the power shut down in Texas is. Because of COVID-19 we take advantage of several stores that deliver orders. Being 77 it is safer that way. The person who did the shopping for us said that part of our order was not available because of the power outage in Texas. We live in NM. Not a big deal but it does demonstrate the impacts of poor leadership like Texas has had over years.
To put this mayor in his best light, he is the picture of a empty-headed follower. And WHAT he follows are low-level ideas and people who harbor within themselves the lowest of low horizons, like Ted Cruz, Trump himself, Graham, Rand Paul (should I go on).
But the U.S. Constitution was written by those who, whatever else their problems were, harbored high political horizons along with an understanding of history. We need to reflect those horizons . . . so that we CAN “keep it.”
But this mayor, from thinking that everyone can ONLY think in terms of TRANSACTIONAL or predatory capitalism (his low horizon evident in his post), and though he may resonate deeply with higher-level thought, really cannot understand what the writers thought from THEIR higher horizon and wrote into the Constitution; nor can he understand what Biden understands when, explicitly in his speech to world leaders, he rises above the horizon of transactional or capitalist-only thought, and especially above left/right, R/D, or other brands of tribal politics.
From this man’s low horizon, those who work from a higher horizon are nothing but dupes. They are dispensable at best and dangerous to his personal ambitions and stash, at worst. They are weak, and only to be taken advantage of whenever possible.
The “best light,” then, is that the ex-Mayor doesn’t understand (but still should) the higher vision; and the worst light, and lest you think I am a Pollyanna, is that he has shown himself to be a bag of living political vomit. CBK
CBK, well put. The worst kind of selfish. Why did he run for mayor? To tell everyone that he wouldn’t do a damn thing for them to help them?
It’s the perfect job description for these types: Get into power with no organization skills or understanding of how to assist the general population and simply hold a position while making social and fiscal choices that are deep rooted in your own narrow views of the world. This is how we ended up with a Trump presidency. No need to serve as a public servant if you don’t believe in actually serving others.
I suspect that future biographies or tell-all books about Trump will document that he never worked a minute on the job. He wanted to be President but he didn’t want the responsibility of leadership.
We are digging out of an ice storm on my Tennessee ridge. 14 last night has turned to melting, and our electricity came on this morning.
I drove the road with my chain saw, cutting trees out of the right of way so traffic could proceed. I have been walking it before and doing the same thing. So it is with some authority that I declare this author to be a self centered jackass. Let him bray as a private citizen. I will continue to work so that he has the right to look like the north end of a southbound mule.

I was struck dumb when the news showed a busy road–maybe in Texarkana?–where one side had been plowed & was clean as a whistle, w/a smooth flow of traffic, & the other side a snowy, frozen, messy, disaster–dangerous & inaccessible.
Living in the Chicago area–where the weather has been as low, lately, as -25 (w/our infamous wind chill) & up to 6′ of snow mounds (from street cleaning, snowplowing, shoveling) in our front yards, having my jaw drop at this viewing is a first.
Some apology
I wish I lived in New Zealand, where civil society exists and is supported by the federal government. I wouldn’t be living in fear of the coronavirus. School shootings and other domestic terror events would be rare, not common. I’m tired of the increasing violence in a country which has always had a large contingent of white supremacists.
For some texture and context, my niece in San Antonio now has electricity and water… after a hellish week. She has MS. With extraordinary gumption she managed to get a wheelchair into her car (I imagine there is a lift), and then drive to the grocer. That was yesterday.
At the grocer, like everyone else, she was able to buy the rationed food for the day: one loaf of bread and some canned goods. She had been living on peanut butter and crackers for a week.
At the store, Good Samaritans pushed her wheelchair and made sure she was first in line for checkout.
Her home has long had a ramp and I gather that she has learned to negotiate that ,with her wheelchairs, only one of these with battery power. Her son, a customary helper, lives 45 miles away. He was stranded like many others.
Word of her “relative” well being came to her extended family through a Facebook post.
By the way, this niece could once type so fast that she jammed IBM electric typewriters. She earned a master’s degree and qualified for a teaching certificate using an early version of voice-to-text software.
She is now looking forward to schools being open so she can be an on-call substitute teacher of history.
I guess Angela Duckworth would give her an A for GRIT and Carol Dweck would say she has the proper “growth mindset.”
I call her remarkable for many other reasons.

My late father had MS (but lived an extraordinary lifetime)–served in WWII, worked as a glazing contractor & was out & about no matter the harshest Chicago weather–& this was well before any breakthrough in MS treatment. (My cousin has MS but has been able to benefit from earlier treatments & therapies, not available to my Dad {o.b.m.}.)

Actually referring to your first & original comment, SDP…not Beavis & Butthead. Thought I recognized Randy Rainbow’s voice!
While I think Mr. Boyd abdicated his responsibility as Mayor & certainly didn’t belong in or deserve the position, I think resigning should be a sufficient consequence. That’s acknowledgement that he’s not effective in the position, and, given that the resignation followed immediately after the objectionable statement rather than after an extended period of inaction adversely affecting his constituents’ lives, a new administration was free to implement more constructive policies immediately.
As inappropriate as his policy was, it was still responsible of him to announce it publicly & prominently at the outset of the crisis, making his intentions very direct & giving people the opportunity to respond. When they did so, making their objections clear, his resignation was an admission that his approach wasn’t compatible with the citizens’ needs. There has been a certain political officeholder in recent memory who, under similar circumstances, doubled down on counterproductive & damaging policies & statements, cutting down verbally & professionally any who didn’t support him unconditionally. There have been many others at all levels who stubbornly applied their personal views to inhibit exercise of their official duties, causing great distress.
As soon as he tendered that resignation, which was offered without delay, he went from a government administrator failing to fulfill his mandate to a private citizen with an opinion many disagreed with. He didn’t deserve threats in retaliation; retaliation for what? His immediate announcement of his intentions & subsequent resignation meant there was minimal delay resulting in unnecessary hardship. It’s not remotely like, say, officials in Flint, Michigan, whose enactment of damaging policies & deliberate delay of years in applying remedies, or even acknowledging the devastating results, resulted in substantial loss of health & life.
I certainly don’t think his wife & children deserved the abusive treatment they received. Frankly, viewing this with reasonable perspective, the primary impact was that people were angered over an unpopular crisis (lack of) management policy being announced at the outset of a crisis, the net result being some scuffling in a rush to institute new management. I think his approach was wrong for an official with his responsibilities, but he could have handled it a lot worse, & many others have.

Irony- the “business” that employed Boyd’s wife was reportedly the local public school system. Boyd evidently isn’t informed enough to understand a tax-funded public service is different than a for-profit. Limbaugh made the following recommendation about abortion. “You know how to stop abortion? Require that each one occur with a gun.” He also said, “Feminism was established to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society.” Can we conclude that Limbaugh’s views were consistent with God’s, given the policy toward women at some of his churches?
On Feb 18, a resolution was introduced in the U.S. House honoring Limbaugh. Forty-four house members signed including Gaetz, and three women, Boebart, Marjorie Greene and Herrell.
Congresswoman Yvette Herrell who had trump’s support, beat the Democratic incumbent in one of the seats the GOP won in 2020. She “spent Tuesday (election day) praying”. Money and fossil fuels had a lot to do with her win… respecting God’s creation, human beings and the planet.
It is totally beyond me how any self-respecting U.S. Representatives with any sense of honor would consider a resolution honoring someone like Limbaugh. He and his kind have done nothing for the good of the United States. They have helped to lead to some of the division that currently exists in this nation. He was nothing but a loud mouth clown in a fancy suite with no redeeming qualities.

Supreme Court declines to shield Trump’s tax returns from Manhattan DA
The Supreme Court on Monday rebuffed a bid by former President Trump to shield his tax returns and other financial records from a New York grand jury subpoena.
The justices issued the order without comment or noted dissents.
I think we should start bidding. I put $10 for T**** not being able to run for any office anymore and $5 that he goes to jail longer than 3 months.
As a New Yorker, I’ve seen enough of Trump to know better than to bet against him. He’s slippery, like that.

Now that Cyrus Vance has his tax returns–which apparently are no longer being audited!–we may begin to see some activity in the courts.
Same for New York State, which is investigating his finances.
And Fulton County, Georgia, which is investigating his interference in counting the ballots (which was done three times, including by hand).
Waiting to see whether he attracts a billion-dollar lawsuit from either Dominion Voting Systems or Smartmatic.
