Hiding from the rioters in a secret location away from the Capitol, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) appealed to Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) phoned Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter.
And Kellyanne Conway, a longtime Trump confidante and former White House senior adviser, called an aide who she knew was standing at the president’s side.
But as senators and House members trapped inside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday begged for immediate help during the siege, they struggled to get through to the president, who — safely ensconced in the West Wing — was too busy watching fiery TV images of the crisis unfolding around them to act or even bother to hear their pleas. “
He was hard to reach, and you know why? Because it was live TV,” said one close Trump adviser. “If it’s TiVo, he just hits pause and takes the calls. If it’s live TV, he watches it, and he was just watching it all unfold.”
Even as he did so, Trump did not move to act. And the message from those around him — that he needed to call off the angry mob he had egged on just hours earlier, or lives could be lost — was one to which he was not initially receptive.
“It took him awhile to appreciate the gravity of the situation,” Graham said in an interview. “The president saw these people as allies in his journey and sympathetic to the idea that the election was stolen.”
Trump ultimately — and begrudgingly — urged his supporters to “go home in peace.” But the six hours between when the Capitol was breached shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and when it was finally declared secure around 8 p.m. that evening reveal a president paralyzed — more passive viewer than resolute leader, repeatedly failing to perform even the basic duties of his job.
Capitol Police were unable to stop a breach of the Capitol.
The man who vowed to be a president of law and order failed to enforce the law or restore order. The man who has always seen himself as the protector of uniformed police sat idly by as Capitol Police officers were outnumbered, outmaneuvered, trampled on — and in one case, killed. And the man who had long craved the power of the presidency abdicated many of the responsibilities of the commander in chief. The episode in which Trump supporters rose up against their own government, leaving five people dead, will be central to any impeachment proceedings, critical to federal prosecutors considering incitement charges against him or his family, and a dark cornerstone of his presidential legacy.
This portrait of the president as the Capitol was under attack on Jan. 6 is the result of interviews with 15 Trump advisers, members of Congress, GOP officials and other Trump confidants, many of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to share candid details.
The day began ominously, with a “Save America March” on the Ellipse devoted to perpetuating Trump’s baseless claims that somehow the 2020 election was stolen from him.
Before the president’s remarks around noon, several of his family members addressed the crowd with speeches that all shared a central theme: Fight. Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons, told the crowd that lawmakers needed to “show some fight” and “stand up,” before urging the angry mass to “march on the Capitol today.” Donald Trump Jr., another of the president’s sons, exhorted all “red-blooded, patriotic Americans” to “fight for Trump.”
Backstage, as the president prepared to speak, Laura Branigan’s hit “Gloria” was blared to rev up the crowd, and Trump Jr., in a video he recorded for social media, called the rallygoers “awesome patriots that are sick of the bull—-.” His girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, danced to the song and, clenching her right fist, urged people to “fight.”
The president, too, ended his speech with an exhortation, urging the crowd to give Republicans “the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”
“So let’s walk down Pennsylvania Avenue,” he concluded.
Trump, however, did not join the angry crowd surging toward the Capitol. Instead, he returned to the White House, where at 2:24 p.m. he tapped out a furious tweet railing against Vice President Pence, who in a letter earlier in the day had made clear that he planned to fulfill his constitutional duties and certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris as the winners of the 2020 electoral college vote.
“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify,” he wrote. “USA demands the truth!”
By then, West Wing staffers monitoring initial videos of the protesters on TV and social media were already worried that the situation was escalating and felt that Trump’s tweet attacking Pence was unhelpful.
Press officials had begun discussing a statement from Trump around 2 p.m., when protesters first breached the Capitol, an official familiar with the discussions said. But they were not authorized to speak on behalf of the president and could only take the matter to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, this person said, adding that “the most infuriating part” of the day was how long it took before Trump finally spoke out.
Around the same time, Trump Jr. headed to the airport for a shuttle flight home to New York. As he waited in an airport lounge to board the plane, the president’s namesake son saw that the rallygoers they had all urged to fight were doing just that, breaching police barricades and laying siege to the Capitol.
An aide called Trump Jr. and suggested he immediately issue a statement urging the rioters to stop. At 2:17 p.m., Trump Jr. hit send on a tweet as he boarded the plane: “This is wrong and not who we are,” he wrote. “Be peaceful and use your 1st Amendment rights, but don’t start acting like the other side. We have a country to save and this doesn’t help anyone.”
But the president himself was busy enjoying the spectacle. Trump watched with interest, buoyed to see that his supporters were fighting so hard on his behalf, one close adviser said.
But if the president didn’t appear to understand the magnitude of the crisis, those in his orbit did. Conway immediately called a close personal aide who she knew was with the president, and said she was adding her name to the chorus of people urging Trump to speak to his supporters. He needed to tell them to stand down and leave the Capitol, she told the aide.
Conway also told the aide that she had received calls from the D.C. mayor’s office asking for help in getting Trump to call up the National Guard.
Ivanka Trump had gone to the Oval Office as soon as the riot became clear, and Graham reached her on her cellphone and implored her for help. “They were all trying to get him to speak out, to tell everyone to leave,” said Graham, referring to the small group of aides with Trump on Wednesday afternoon.
Several Republican members of Congress also called White House aides, begging them to get Trump’s attention and have him call for the violence to end. The lawmakers reiterated that they had been loyal Trump supporters and were even willing to vote against the electoral college results — but were now scared for their lives, officials said.
When the mob first breached the Capitol, coming within mere seconds of entering the Senate chamber, Pence — who was overseeing the electoral certification — was hustled away to a secure location, where he remained for the duration of the siege, despite multiple suggestions from his Secret Service detail that he leave the Capitol, said an official familiar with Pence’s actions that day. Instead, the vice president fielded calls from congressional leaders furious that the National Guard had not yet been deployed, this official said. Pence, from his secret location in the Capitol, spoke with legislative and military leaders, working to mobilize the soldiers and offering reassurance.
Even as his supporters at the Capitol chanted for Pence to be hanged, Trump never called the vice president to check on him or his family. Marc Short, Pence’s chief of staff, eventually called the White House to let them know that Pence and his team were okay, after receiving no outreach from the president or anyone else in the White House. Meanwhile, in the West Wing, a small group of aides — including Ivanka Trump, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and Meadows — was imploring Trump to speak out against the violence. Meadows’s staff had prompted him to go see the president, with one aide telling the chief of staff before he entered the Oval Office, “They are going to kill people.”
Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the group finally persuaded Trump to send a tweet: “Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement,” he wrote. “They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”
But the Twitter missive was insufficient, and the president had not wanted to include the final instruction to “stay peaceful,” according to one person familiar with the discussions.
Less than an hour later, aides persuaded Trump to send a second, slightly more forceful tweet: “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful,” he wrote. “No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order — respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!” ’You’re very special’
McCarthy did eventually reach Trump, but later told allies that he found the president distracted. So McCarthy repeatedly appeared on television to describe the mayhem, an adviser said, in an effort to explain just how dire the situation was.
McCarthy also called Kushner, who that afternoon was arriving back from a trip to the Middle East. The Secret Service originally warned Kushner that it was unsafe to venture downtown to the White House. McCarthy pleaded with him to persuade Trump to issue a statement for his supporters to leave the Capitol, saying he’d had no luck during his own conversation with Trump, the adviser said. So Kushner headed to the White House.
At one point, Trump worried that the unruly group was frightening GOP lawmakers from doing his bidding and objecting to the election results, an official said.
National security adviser Robert C. O’Brien also began calling members of Congress to ask how he could help. He called Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) around 4 p.m., a Lee spokesman said. In an unlikely twist, Lee had heard from the president earlier — when he accidentally dialed the senator in a bid to reach Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) to discuss overturning the election.
Others were still having trouble getting through to the White House. Speaking on ABC News shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, Chris Christie, a GOP former governor of New Jersey, said he’d spent the last 25 minutes trying to reach Trump directly to convey a simple, if urgent, message.
“The president caused this protest to occur; he’s the only one who can make it stop,” Christie said. “The president has to come out and tell his supporters to leave the Capitol grounds and to allow the Congress to do their business peacefully. And anything short of that is an abdication of his responsibility.” Around this time, the White House was preparing to put out a video address on behalf of the president. They had begun discussing this option earlier but struggled to organize their effort. Biden, meanwhile, stepped forward with remarks that seemed to rise to the occasion: “The scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect the true America, do not represent who we are.”
Trump aides did three takes of the video and chose the most palatable option — despite some West Wing consternation that the president had called the violent protesters “very special.”
“This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people,” Trump said in the video, released shortly after 4 p.m. “We have to have peace. So go home. We love you. You’re very special. You’ve seen what happens. You see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home, and go home in peace.”
Amid the chaos, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) had implemented a 6 p.m. curfew for the city, and as darkness fell, the Secret Service told West Wing staff that, save for an essential few, everyone had to leave the White House and go home.
At 6:01 p.m., Trump blasted out yet another tweet, which Twitter quickly deleted and which many in his orbit were particularly furious about, fearing he was further inflaming the still-tense situation.
“These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long,” Trump wrote. “Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!”
Thirteen minutes later, at 6:14 p.m., a perimeter was finally established around the Capitol. About 8 p.m., more than six hours after the initial breach, the Capitol was declared secure.
The following evening, on Thursday, Trump released another video, the closest advisers say he is likely to come to a concession speech. “Congress has certified the results: A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th,” Trump said in the video. “My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly, and seamless transition of power. This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.”
His calls for healing and reconciliation were more than a day too late, many aides said. Yet as Trump watched the media coverage of his video, he grew angry. The president said he wished he hadn’t done it, a senior White House official said, because he feared that the calming words made him look weak.
In 2001, Donald Trump changed his party affiliation to Democratic. In 2009, he changed it to Republican. In 2011, he changed it to Independent. In 2012, he changed it back to Republican. Between 1989 and 2015, he made $694,750 in contributions to Democratic candidates, including Charlie Rangel, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid, John Kerry, Anthony Weiner, and Joe Biden. His largest contributions to any Republican running at the federal level were $10,600 to John McCain. Prior to 2011, he gave more to Democrats than he did to Republicans, and he never gave much, given his net worth. He is whatever the exact opposite of a generous spirit is. He BRAGGED to an interviewer that he gave some money, on both sides of the aisle, hoping to buy influence.
Trump, of course, is a racist and a con man who suffers from the pathology known as Malignant Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The man (using the term loosely) who took out a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for the execution of the Central Park 5 (proved by DNA evidence to be innocent), was horrified at the election of Barack Obama and became the leading proponent of the utterly unfounded, wacko birtherism conspiracy theory about our first African-American president. Having so committed himself on that extreme side of the aisle, this serial grifter with no actual principles or beliefs except his love of self, lust for money by any criminal means, hatred of perceived enemies, racism, sexism, and utter contempt for anyone not rich, saw an opportunity to feed his desperate need for adulation when Bannon, Sessions, and Miller, noting his birtherism, approached him to run for President and carry their white supremacist agenda forward.
So, he promptly threw over his previously often expressed views—support for women’s right to choose, an opposition to guns and hunting—and made himself over (with lots of coaching) as an UberRepublican Nationalist. In a different world, he could have ended up running as a Democrat, for he has no actual values, Democratic or Republican, and could have gone in any direction that he thought the wind was blowing. In private, he ridicules the folks who support him, expressing, often, his contempt for Evangelical Christians, for example. And because he has no editor, no filter, his private contempt sometimes spills over in public, as when he makes nasty comments about the venues he is speaking at (Erie, Dalton), tells his mostly poor, working class audiences that he likes rich people, says that he really likes uneducated people (because they vote for him), says that the yokels in his base would vote for him if he committed murder in broad daylight, and passes a tax cut and then goes to Mar-a-Lago and tells his rich pals at dinner that he just gave them a big Christmas present. So, not a Christian. Not an actual populist champion of the working class.
And the man who evaded the draft, called our fallen soldiers “losers,” ridiculed John McCain for being captured and held prisoner, sold out to Putin, and incited insurrection against the government of the United States is no American patriot, however much he hugs flags. Far from it. He traffics in sedition and treason (he clearly made a deal with the Russians to save himself after his bankruptcy, but his relations there go back much further) and has done so throughout his term in office.
Trump has one religion and one political affiliation, both of which are Donald Trump (though he also worships Mammon).
Because he cares only about himself, he demands absolute loyalty (loyalty oaths!!!) but has NONE in return. Example: has there ever been a more abjectly kow-towing, toadying sycophant than Mike Pence has been to the Orange Idiot? But look how Trump repays such groveling. Trump loves the groveling but has contempt for the groveler (most of us share this second trait).
Trump’s a completely unprincipled man and capable of ANYTHING, such as traitorously cozying up to dictators; abandoning a) our allies the Kurds, b) the Ukrainians at war with Russia, and c) the freaking Europeans, for heaven’s sake; and fomenting insurrection not once but over and over and over and over again (Don’t let them take our beautiful monuments! BLM is Antifa! Liberate Michigan! Stop the Steal! Fight! You will never take back the country with weakness!). He is utterly amoral. But, ofc, we knew that a long, long time ago:
“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
“If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her dating her.”
“I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ‘em by the p****y.”
He is a vile, ignorant, lazy, criminal, predatory, treasonous, utterly amoral and unprincipled con man and creep driven solely by greed, vindictiveness, and a need for continual praise.
He has the moral compass of parasitic wasp larvae.
And he is plotting, right now, after his failed Beer Hall Putsch, the next wave of the Moronavirus–the next attack on democracy. Trump always doubles down.
This is why he needs to be in prison. This and his many crimes, including treason.
Bob Nice reading. I think what we are seeing in Trump is not a reflective grasp and implementation of fascism (ala Arendt), but rather a totally corrupt personality . . . who has found an audience and wo has gleaned political power, but didn’t really read enough of Hitler’s work (or perhaps didn’t draw enough from other fascists) to get anything worthwhile out out it, that is, according to the limitations of his bereft-personality preferences.
To us, it looks like fascism personified and in some sense it IS, but as FAILED. However, I think TO the unreflective Trump it’s just a natural and operative extension of (what to us is) his defunct and deranged thought processes where everything is true if HE thinks it is. These these processes (and with some of his followers) have a logic of their own, but end up looking TO US like fascism.
My guess is that he missed the mark of full-fledged fascist intent precisely because of those mental short-comings. If true, then we should listen to those who warn us about future fascist “leaders” who are “more intelligent” than Trump. I doubt Hawley will stand; but others might.
And again, BTW, OANN was broadcasting information about how the election was stolen . . . just this morning. CBK
As Trump was addressing the crowd about weakness and strength, even promising ‘I’ll be with you”, I suddenly saw the emperor without his clothes. I was hearing words of his father, relentless words heard throughout his childhood.
Desperate now, refusing to admit he is a loser, his mind has snapped, neural connections are running wild, unpredictable behavior threatening who-knows-what to assuage this psychopathic narcissist’s sense of weakness, depression has set in.
Darrell Yes . . . he’s a mess. The situation also shows the straight-line cohesive relationship between a writ-small, otherwise-intelligent bully personality, and full-fledged fascism as a writ-large reigning political order. (Stalin was a horror, but from what I can tell, was much more intelligent than either Hitler or Trump.)
Again, I don’t think Trump is even intelligent by any means. He’s just following his unthinking “instincts” that flow logically from his early-built personality distortions and supported by a very brief reading of Hitler’s works, coupled with an admiration of other bully fascists like Putin. That’s why he thought his instincts would continue working–he didn’t mediate them or think out their outcomes. And he thought his followers would “know” what he wanted . . . I heard one say that they just wanted Trump to “get out of the way.” Scary stuff. CBK
Those “instincts” you speak of, most likely, are childhood generated, unconscious, implicit influences on his behavior that in the absence of appropriate, mitigating pressure, such as education, he must follow, even into a dead end.
His inability to think through their outcomes would stem from his amorality. He has no guide, nothing with which to make comparisons.
Empathyless, he sits alone.
Darrell Yes, . . . instincts formed by early influences and habits, never challenged. CBK
Well, a couple observations. First, what is a fascist state but one with a totalitarian leader, and so Trump’s attempt to turn the state into a cult of personality devoted entirely to his whims, and his admiration of such strongmen worldwide, well, that’s fascism. And then there is his absolute vassalage to Putin, who is also Mr. Cult of Personality. Yes, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that Trump didn’t and couldn’t read some imagined Dummies’ Guide to Becoming a Fascist Leader and that he is someone devoid of any ideology except devotion to himself, but he adopted all the fascist tropes: loyalty oaths, the appeal to a return to a mythical golden age (MAGA), the ultranationalism, the scapegoating of members of ethnic groups, the insistence upon enormous military spectacles, the rallies for the sole purpose of adulation of the Glorious Leader, the abrupt dismissal and attempted punishment of subordinates who dared cross him in any way, the marshaling of paramilitary goons, the vast military expansion, the erasure of a dividing line between corporate and government business, the shameless denial of obvious facts and rewriting of history, the call to fight against an enemy within, the politicization of intellectual activity (scientific institutions like the CDC, the Government Printing Office, etc), the insistence that the military, police, and judiciary act upon his every whim. If it quacks like a duck. . . .
But yes, the coming Trumpling–the one who picks up his base base and attempts to carry the Trump movement forward will be a COMPETENT fascist, someone who knows that he or she must begin by putting absolutely servile people in charge of all agencies and departments that can exercise state violence.
As more inside tell-all books appear, we will learn what we suspected. Trump never governed, never took interest in any substantive work of the government, never read or even listened to briefings, never made a decision based on knowledge, spent his time indulging his ego and appetites.
Yup. Donnie Do Little. Jabba the Trump. Some sort of orange, sluglike lifeform.
What a great summary and set of observations about the most disgusting person who’s ever occupied the office of president.
I tend to view Trump’s adoption of fascism as a suit of clothes in which he felt the most comfortable, considering his severe upbringing.
Lacking the intelligence to do anything but glean the surface in any books he may have read about fascism, like taking a speed-reading course, then missing a ‘not’ in a Cardinal Newman essay, he relied on what came naturally, those ruling practices we’ve seen that render human beings as tools to use and throw away.
His preening with Putin and Kim Jung Un and others showed the world how well his suit of clothes fit.
You’re absolutely right, he belongs in jail, and might very well be headed there.
I am greatly encouraged that his poll ratings have dropped since Jan 6, and that friends and relatives of those who participated in the attack on the Capitol, are tipping off the FBI.
Americanism is still alive.
Darrell Yes . . . and notice Trump always follows a new criticism with “putting on the same conceptual clothes.” He and his “news” followers are like mirrors . . . reflecting every criticism back to the critic with the very same words. . . . you have to play whack-a-mole, only now with a host of Cheshire cats in Alice in Wonderland. CBK
His upbringing was not severe. He was a spoiled brat.
Yes, there’s probably better words than ‘severe upbringing”‘ to describe the circumstances of always being told never to lose, never to be described as a loser, to always be strong, never to show weakness, to hit back harder than you were hit. coupled with being a spoiled brat, which in itself is a cruel precursor to Trump’s worship of wealth.
Maybe, unintentional parental betrayal, neglect; inappropriate, explicit examples of executive function; not enough or too much attention from a generous, perhaps, but authoritarian Father..
A single word or phrase describing the raising of a child, resulting in the adult Donald Trump, challenges imagination.
Darrell I think psychologists (and we) are going to have a field day on the question of Trump’s psychology, and past influences, for years to come. We cannot forget, however, the totally Trump-misunderstood “The Power of Positive Thinking.” I’m sure Peale didn’t mean either toxic optimism or similarly-toxic masculinity.
I don’t know what I’m to say to my (ahem) relative Trump supporter. I take no pleasure there in being right. For family, being right only comes back to you over time in passive aggressive but creative ways. Sigh . . . . CBK
This is a hit piece. Very thin and full of conjecture and opinion. LMAO who do you get to buy into this less than good, dare I even compare it to journalism?
I’m curious. In all of the later accounts of Trump’s statement, the line, “We love you,” has been omitted. Any known reason why?
I was not aware that his statement “I love you” to the mob was omitted from accounts of his actions.
Bunker down, Cadet Bone Spurs!
This is what he did.
Correction: An alternative title for this post could be “The Bunkering Down of Cadet Bone Spurs.”
Dumb Struck, or What a Surprise!
Pence loved on Trump
more than even Ms. Graham.
Then Trump fired up goons,
who chanted they’d slay him.
Rudy helped Jabba
to incite the mayhem.
Then Jabba thanked Rudy
by saying, “Don’t pay him.”
But Cruz wins the prize.
AFTER Trump dissed Ted’s spouse,
still he Trumped up for Trump
an attack on OUR House.
So dance master Trump
taught his Party to limbo.
No low was too low,
no sprawl too akimbo.
What about Ted Cruz’s father? Trump said he assassinate JFK. Did he?
IKR? Crazy.
Yes, I had written that into the comments the other day! (But then wondered if it was Marco Rubio’s dad it45 was referring to.) The latter makes no sense, though, unless looked at from the Cuba angle.
But the assassination was in Dallas so, right, it was Cruz. & then also,, the insults against Cruz’ wife!
But Cruz is truly a psychophant…one who needs to be stripped of his office. The personification of a Groveling Old Penumbra.
It was during the debates in 2016 that Trump accused Cruz’ father of assassin arming JFK. Healso ridiculed his wife.
This far R media is once again excusing Trump from any blame for causing the rioting that caused 5 deaths and the close call of nearly killing or maiming our democratically elected members of Congress, including the VP.

From PatriotPulse:
Donald Trump made one announcement about the inauguration that took Joe Biden by surprise
Next Wednesday is the inauguration.
After the riot at the Capitol, Americans wanted to know if it will proceed as planned.
And now Donald Trump made one announcement about the inauguration that took Joe Biden by surprise.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump urged Americans not to engage in any violence, law breaking, or vandalism of any kind in the run up to or on inauguration day.
“In light of reports of more demonstrations, I urge that there must be NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind,” President Trump wrote. “That is not what I stand for and it is not what America stands for. I call on ALL Americans to help ease tensions and calm tempers. Thank You.”
An aide to President Trump alluded to this Big Tech censorship in a further comment to Fox News asking for Big Tech’s help in getting the President’s message out. “President Trump is asking all Americans to join with him in ensuring that there is an orderly and peaceful transition next week,” a Trump aide told Fox. “President Trump is also asking that Big Tech companies join with him in this effort.”
“This is a critical time in our nation’s history and surely we can all come together to deliver this important message and not continue to play partisan politics,” the Trump aide added.
Democrats and some RINOs and Never-Trumpers are now impeaching the President based on false claims that the President incited “insurrection” at the Capitol.
But in the speech before the riot the President specifically called for his supporters to “peacefully and patriotically” make their voices heard.
In subsequent statements the President committed to a peaceful transition of power.
The impeachment – like the last sham impeachment – is meritless.
Clearly, Jabba’s advisors have warned him of the peril he is in–conviction in the Senate (all that money he will receive post-Presidency is at stake) and possible trial for inciting a riot and sedition. And that’s clearly what Trump’s statement and his piece from “Patriot”Pulse is about: saving Glorious Leader Who Shines More Orange than Does the Sun from conviction in the Senate.
Diane,
THANK YOU for this post.
And … Trump and his “WARP Speed” to distribute Covid-19 vaccines is broken.
I bet Putin is smiling.
Smiling? He’s laughing his ass off.
Oh, his enormous investment in The Idiot paid off handsomely.
Red carpet, color guard, military and and 21-gun salute for the great occasion of Trump’s leaving the WH? Bet it isn’t officials who are planning this. What a waste of taxpayer money. I’m surprised that Trump doesn’t want a parade of tanks.

Trump to Leave Washington on Morning of Biden’s Inauguration
President Donald Trump will leave Washington next Wednesday morning, just before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, to begin his post-presidential life in Florida.
Associated Press
Published 15 January 2021
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will leave Washington next Wednesday morning, just before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, to begin his post-presidential life in Florida.
He will be sent off with a departure ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, according to a person familiar with the planning who spoke on condition of anonymity because Trump’s plans have not been formally announced. Officials are considering an elaborate event that would have the feel of a state visit, with a red carpet, color guard, military band and 21-gun salute all being discussed.
Trump had already announced that he would not be attending Biden’s inauguration — an historical break with tradition — after spending months making baseless allegations of voter fraud in an attempt to delegitimize Biden’s presidency. Vice President Mike Pence will attend in his place…

Yes, carol, aside from the utter idiocy & narcissism of this “ceremony,” it’s going to cost us BIG $$$$$$$$$$.
“The day began” with Giuliani standing before the mob accompanied by John C. Eastman, board chair of Robert P. George’s National Organization for Marriage.
Kellyanne Conway talked on Bill Maher days after the riot about the gains made by people during Trump’s tenure. She omitted the gains made by right wing religions. Conway is allegedly a member of the politically powerful Council for National Policy, a secretive, conservative, Christian group described at Sourcewatch.
Thanks for the levity, Poet
I bet Kelly Anne was talking about the bank account gains of Trump , his family and White House staffers like Kelly.
OAN News had a long segment last night about how the election was stolen. CBK
Trump’s Ultimate Achievement:
He will be able to boast that the number of people attending his inauguration was far greater than the number at Biden’s. Further proof that he won the election.
(Oh, wait. The public is not allowed to attend.)
He will also be able to boast that the number of people at his insurrection was the largest of any US presidential insurrection.
And that the number of people who died is also largest.
And that the number of bare chested, face painted, body tatooed nuts wearing bear hats with horns was also largest.
Id bet some of these boasts will never be equaled to say nothing of beaten, especially the latter one.
That guy will have his photo in the history books for sure.
Maybe that was his main purpose
“Number at the insurrection, greatest”- clever.
I got a laugh when I found John C Danforth evidently named the Center for Religion and Politics after himself. He brought Hawley to D.C.
Danforth said after seeing Hawley’s actions this past week that mentoring Hawley was “the biggest mistake of my life.” Danforth is an ordained Episcopalian priest.
Danforth’s epiphany came a little late.
The loonies never stop. This comes from United We Stand:

Calls For Impeaching Obama Is Taking Ground
With the Dems latest move it is now fair game to impeach Obama.
Wednesday on FNC’s “Hannity,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) questioned the merits of an impeachment effort underway initiated by House Democrats.
Graham argued against impeaching a president that has already left office and mentioned the possibility of impeaching former President Barack Obama for the lack of effort during the attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi in 2012.
“We’ll play this out,” he explained. “We impeach the president today without any evidence. It’s just sheer hatred. If this becomes the norm, be careful what you wish for today. Under this theory, the radical left — if you can impeach a president after they’re out of office, why don’t we impeach George Washington? He owned slaves. Where does this stop? So, to my Republican colleagues, let’s stand firm for the idea — whether you like Donald Trump or not, he’s not above the law.”
“If he did something wrong, you know, you can face the consequences of the law,” Graham continued. “Impeachment is political. I find him truly appalling, overly obnoxious & thoroughly unfit to hold any kind of public office.
I hope Schumer keeps him shut up & shut out.
carolmalaysia This is just more relativist ‘whataboutism.” The cure for THAT is to recognize the difference between REAL-truth and falsity . . . and that based in what is and is not about adherence to the Constitution and good for the country.
I can shoot your dog, and you can shoot mine. <–same thing. But it’s not the same if I shoot while your dog is attacking my child and you shoot while my dog is sleeping on my porch. CBK
‘ “Impeachment is political….”
What a stupid statement. It makes the entire Constitution impotent. After all, it’s just the political ramblings of a bunch of dissatisfied, treasonous British colonists.
Does anyone need to be reminded that politics is the the process by which we govern ourselves?
We should impeach King George III for insurrection.
And impeach Queen Elizabeth for her son Andrew.
Patriot Pulse:
Laura Ingraham told her viewers the real reason Nancy Pelosi impeached Donald Trump
Democrats and Never-Trump turncoats claim the reason they impeached Donald Trump is because he supposedly incited a riot at the Capitol.
That is a lie.
And Laura Ingraham told her viewers the real reason Nancy Pelosi impeached Donald Trump.
During her Wednesday night broadcast Ingraham broke down for her viewers what was really going in Washington, D.C.
Democrats and establishment RINOs did not just want to discredit Donald Trump.
Ingraham explained the real goal was to “impeach the Americans who support his policies.”
Establishment RINOs like Liz Cheney agree with the Democrats on open borders, amnesty, endless war and trade deals that ship American jobs to China.
Some in the fake news claimed it was not true.
But at the same time Ingraham made her case to viewers, CNN’s Don Lemon was proving her correct.
In a back-and-forth with fellow CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, Lemon declared that all Trump voters were on the side of the KKK and the rioters at the Capitol even if they opposed bigotry and did not participate in the riot and condemned political violence.
Joe Biden is already talking up the need to pass a domestic terrorism law.
Anchors on MSNBC such as former Republican Nicole Wallace wants to put Trump supporters under government surveillance.
Impeaching Donald Trump for inciting a riot is the Washington, D.C. establishment’s way of smearing the 75,000,000 Americans that voted for Donald Trump as traitors and insurrectionists.
Rush Limbaugh always says that the media runs the Democrat Party.
Both times Democrats impeached President Trump they were egged on by their allies in the press.
It’s not too hard to see how the Biden administration will treat Trump supporters if you watch cable news or read the legacy media to see the abject hatred many in the pres hold in their hearts for Trump supporters.
Egged on by the press? WHAT?
EGGED ON BY EVIDENCE!
And now, finally there is acknowledgement that those who invaded the capitol were Timothy McVeighs unleashed by the president and every silent legislator. They hate government, authority, regulations – blended with white supremacy and disdain for anything “liberal.”
Well, it only too them 4 years to figure that out. And, even with 5 dead and hundreds arrested, most Republicans have yet to disavow or denounce what took place or make any attempt to stop new riots. And, while they know with with no margin for error, the president lost this election – but they are too scared still to say so.
Impeachment is not about the 70 million who voted for the president. I have no respect for them as they sold their souls and held their noses for the supreme court and deregulation – but kept silent well after as the president baited hate and validated terrorists and terrorism.
As for the elected Senators and Representatives – impeachment put them in the history books where they belong and their families, future employers, “posterity” face what they have wrought.
I put out this garbage because it is the far R media that are continuing to want Trump to be president. People read this and believe it.
…they impeached Donald Trump is because he supposedly incited a riot at the Capitol. That is a lie.

This is what I sent back to this far R site:
Was the Capitol riot a false flag event to discredit Trump supporters?
Trump supporters did all the discrediting to themselves. They falsely believed that Trump won the election. Trump managed to pull in wild extremists from all over the country.
The storming of the Capitol also included many ridiculous elements—silly costumes worn together with tactical gear, a grinning man making off with a stolen lectern. But it was deadly serious: The mob was beaten back with lethal force, when some of its members were just steps away from legislators. Five people have died from this disaster. The president, meanwhile, watched it all unfold on television, resisting calls to bring in the National Guard. Trump was filled with glee while watching this mob storm the Capitol building. He made sure that he and his children watched from a safe place.
Trump is a domestic terrorist and anyone who stormed the capitol building should be held accountable. This rotten behavior is destructive to our democracy.
Far R media that lie and cover up are responsible for spreading hatred and fear. Trump, fortunately, has been cut off from Twitter and Facebook. He has lied over 23,000 times and enough is enough. Closing his accounts should have happened months ago.
Mad Patriot News should be closed down permanently. You have done enough damage to this country.
I keep getting emails from far R loonies. Now the Lefties want to put Trump supporters in prison camps for re-education and have government censorship of the media.

Tucker Carlson told the frightening truth about what happened at the Capitol Riot
Democrats are on the warpath.
They thirst for vengeance for four years and now believe complete and total victory is in their grasp.
And Tucker Carlson just told the frightening truth about what happened at the Capitol Riot.
On Thursday night, Carlson led off his program with a monologue about the riot at the Capitol and what it was and what it wasn’t.
While condemning the riot, Carlson shot down the idea that it was a white supremacist insurrection.
But Carlson explained the real danger was the fact that every power center in America from the incoming Biden administration, to Big Tech, to corporate America all saw the riot as a leverage point to impose the greatest crackdown on free speech and civil liberties in American history.
“They are using what happened last week to justify the most sweeping crackdown on civil liberties and free speech in the history of this country. Are you surprised they are doing that? You shouldn’t be surprised. We lived through something similar this summer. We have seen the template for what they will do and what they plan to do,” Carlson stated.
Carlson then played a number of clips of liberals in major institutions demanding re-education camps, government censorship of the news media, and social media crackdowns.
Joe Biden is said to want Congress to pass a new domestic terrorism law that would allow law enforcement to monitor and spy on Trump supporters in the name of combating “extremism.”
Americans are losing their jobs even if they didn’t take part in the riot.
The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson asked a MSNBC audience how to “deprogram” Trump supporters.
“There are millions of Americans, almost all white, almost all Republicans, who somehow need to be deprogrammed. It’s as if they are members of a cult, the Trumpist cult and have to be deprogrammed. Do you have any idea how we start that process?” Robinson stated.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for a government commission to monitor the news and censor stories Democrats did not like.
Ocasio Cortez stated:
There is absolutely is a commission that’s being discussed. Several Members of Congress in some of my discussions have brought up media literacy because that is a part of what happened here.
We’re going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation.
Finally, Carlson played a video of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey explaining that banning Donald Trump was just the start of Twitter purging conservatives.
Dorsey declared:
We are focused on one account right now, but this is going to be much bigger than just one account and it’s going to go on for much longer than just this day, this week.
I don’t believe this is going away any time soon and the moves we are making today around Qanon, for instance, one such example of a much broader approach that we should be looking at and going deeper on.
America has never seen anything like this.
Many Americans worry the country is turning into a banana republic where the winning side puts the losers on trial and sentences them to prison camps.
Democrats are doing nothing to disabuse fearful Americans of that notion by pressing forward rhetorically with lunatic schemes.
Renewed Right will keep you up-to-date on any new developments in this ongoing story.
41 minutes of fear: An examination of videos and photos reveals what happened inside the U.S. Capitol at the height of the siege

“According to a well-known expression, Rome’s emperor at the time, the decadent and unpopular Nero, “fiddled while Rome burned.” The expression has a double meaning: Not only did Nero play music while his people suffered, but he was an ineffectual leader in a time of crisis.”
https://www.history.com/news/did-nero-really-fiddle-while-rome-burned
Want-to-be Emperor the decadent and unpopular Trump can’t play the fiddle, so he watched TV as a mob ransacked the capital of the United States.
He grinned as he watched because he wanted total destruction.
Precisely what Nero fiddled with is never specified.
While it might be reasonable to assume he played the fiddle, that is not necessarily the case.
Maybe he was fiddling with his chariot because it had a flat tire.
Or with something else.
I spent a good part of the day today fiddling with the engine on my car to figure out why it is idling rough.
My fiddling paid off because I discovered my PCV valve was broken and I saved myself a small fortune by fixing it myself.
SDP fixed the PCV….
Now, that’s what I call poetry.
America Now Has Its Own Green Zone, as Trumpian Fascism Erects Racist Red Zone
By Juan Cole, Informed Comment
16 January 21
America now has its own Green Zone in downtown Washington, D.C., where the Mall is closed, the city is locked down, and protective fencing has gone up around the Capitol. You only need a Green Zone, a safe small space completely under the control of the government, if the rest of the country is a Red Zone.
Donald Trump worked his white supremacist and conspiracy nut networks throughout the United States to turn it into a Red Zone, i.e. a lawless realm of improvised explosive devices and violent vigilantes and traitorous self-styled ‘patriots.’ Joe Biden won’t be able to have a normal inauguration not only because of the pandemic but because he will have to be carefully kept in the Green Zone.
A Red Zone is a sign of profound failure, perhaps even a failed state. In Iraq, it announced the failure of the Bush invasion and occupation. The US military never controlled anything but the ground its soldiers actually stood on.
I warned about this kind of thing in November, 2016, after Trump was elected, at a talk at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York:
Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs: “American Muslims and the Trump Administration with Juan Cole”
As I blogged the Iraq War in the zeroes, many of my headlines read like this:
Car Bomber Penetrates Green Zone . (The Bush administration tried to deny that this story was true, but an American in Baghdad sent me a local US government memo acknowledging that it happened.)…
Our Iraqi government handlers were not happy with their guests wandering about the Red Zone unescorted, but we got away with it.
Actually by 2019, Iraq authorities had removed 16 miles of blast walls from downtown Baghdad, so there really isn’t a Green Zone any more.
It has moved to Washington, D.C.

Jordan Klepper Sees It All at The Capitol Insurrection | The Daily Social Distancing Show
Jan 12, 2021
The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Pitchforks, Proud Boys, and a one-man “Tyranny Response Team.” Jordan Klepper saw it all at the Capitol insurrection.
Now. Here’s the biggie: what’s to keep from happening what I am calling the Trumpling Scenario–a younger, more charismatic, more competent, actually interested, less lazy, less stupid, less ignorant, more articulate fascist a) picks up Trump’s base base, b) expands it, and c) immediately, on taking power, puts abjectly servile toadies at the head of every government agency or department that is an actual or potential vehicle for the exercise of violence? (As you may remember from Political Science 101, a government is partly defined by being an entity with a monopoly on certain varieties of violence.)
If we wimp out on our reactions to the Cuckoo Coup of 2021, then there will be nothing to stop this from happening. We might as well write out an invitation to some Cruz, some Hawley, some Governor DeSatan, to become our führer.
This is why Hawley and Cruz must be expelled from the Senate. This is why the insurrectionists must be charged with first-degree murder under the Felony Murder Principle, which says that if you are committing a felony, and someone dies in the course of that, you can arrested, tried, and convicted for first-degree murder.
If we don’t nip this in the bud now, woe be unto us. That would be breathtakingly stupid.
Cuckoo coup is clever but it minimizes the deadly danger our nation was in as thousands of rioters stormed the seat of our government, led by a disciplined cadre with malicious intent. The lives of our nation’s legislative leaders were in danger. They escaped by minutes.
Good point, Diane!
Bob The power structures in monarchies (and tribes) are commonly ordered by bloodlines, usually are surrounded by strong institutions, and remain stable over a long history.
My point about fascism it is that its about pure political power at the writ-large level that flows to and from an authority figure who absorbs into himself even whatever religious order that the culture has or had.
Further, the writ-small personalities of fascist dictators are notoriously stunted and distorted. If there is a “standard” definition of fascism as a writ-large political order, I am saying that it has emerged in history, unhinged from bloodlines in post-monarchy times, having a direct relationship with, and perhaps is even at the behest of, stunted and distorted personalities who happen to find a way to ride their specific political situations into writ-large power (ala Arendt(.
Trump is so boxed in by his distorted personality, he only knows what he wants in terms of it (totally unreflective); and he pursues it with one-size-fits-all method.
He has no understanding of history, the smarts, or the patience to reform the United States into the shape of his distorted bully-fascist personality; and even if he could shape and reflect the same sorts of personalities in his more violent followers, it cannot last, on principle . . . distortions never do. CBK
unhinged from bloodlines?
Nope. European fascism grew out of and built upon German Romanticism and philology, with its appeal to a golden age of Aryan culture, and it held on to that myth of the perfect Aryan past to which we must return after having rid ourselves of the Other to this day.
Bob The bloodlines thing is the principle of generation at work in history. Fascists may refer to and try to draw on tradition and myth, and take advantage of the people’s religious affiliations, but they don’t invest power in actual bloodlines or the generational aspects of leaders (their blood-families), e.g., as in the monarchy of Britain today.
However, the principle of generation is the fundamental power principle of tribes. Though the principle has faded and is conflictive, it still exists . . . in power structures of families writ-small, and in the Middle East and again, as moderated, with Britain’s monarchy writ-large. But the principle really started to lose its power during the scientific revolution and with the break-up in Europe when the titled poor started selling their titles . . . they lost their concrete connection with actual bloodlines. Fascism as such arose from there.
BTW, Jefferson read history and was full-aware of the threat of the powers of kingship . . . the U.S. Constitution is quite explicit about the rejection of princely influence. CBK
It is no accident, and essential to the mythology on which fascism is built, this creation of an inferior and sinister and stealthy or hidden or covert Other. Fascism needs an enemy to justify overt violence and exercise of power, and it finds this, typically, in supposedly inferior peoples who are an enemy within. If it doesn’t actually have one, it creates one, as when Trump and his toadies turned poor asylum seekers into rapist, murderous mobs (MS-13, the Soros Caravan) and protesters against systemic racism into Antifa. The fascists always describe their created Other–the Enemy–as a vast and powerful and covert conspiracy, a secret cabal, because it either doesn’t exist or barely exists. This story–this lie–accounts for the fact that there isn’t real evidence for it.
So you guys agree. You are clarifying rather than disagreeing, right?
Dear Bob Shepherd and Diane Ravitch,
I concur with both of you. The USA has been plagued and damned by ignorance, dogma, falsity, blind faith, spiritual stagnation and epistemological impasse . . . . .
Now Trump has become the symbolic messiah who is going to lead his misguided supporters to glory on Earth and the promised land!
It is often futile to reason with such misguided folks. Perhaps only when the country truly becomes autocratic or fascist will they wake up, but then it will be too late.
Instead of “Flattening the Curve”, the USA is now “Steepening the Curve”, so much so that the MAGA tagline “Make America Great Again” should be changed to MASA: “Make America Sick Again”!
Regarding the POTUS’ Twitter and Facebook accounts, some would even argue that they should have been suspended or terminated a long time ago for continually unleashing falsehood, misinformation and mass distrust. Fortunately, he has not (yet) been given free access to software or button(s) with which to launch weapon(s) of mass destruction.
In any case, those who are fair-minded and discerning are not easily swayed by his constant thrashing around and beating in the bush. Speaking of whether “the president really is a very stable genius”, SoundEagle’s adage is that Trump is a fool’s idea of a genius. In addition, the POTUS has long slid from being a “Law and Order” President to a “Flaw and Border” President.
2020, the Year of the Rat, has brought us not the plague (black death) but Covid-19. And 2020 also brought out the worst of divisive politics and demagogic incitement. I wonder whether it could get even worse in 2021. What a day it was to unfold with sedition, insurrection and coup d’état on the 6th!
Whilst some of us may take some comfort in our living somewhere else, there is the danger that oppressive politics may spread elsewhere or be mirrored by other corrupt politicians outside their origins.
Democracy is not a given. It can be quite fragile, can fail rather badly, and often is approximately as good and benevolent (or bad and malevolent) as the members who practise, control and/or legislate it. We all need to do our parts in contributing to the smooth and equitable functioning of a civil country and democratic society. I have done mine in highlighting many of the most fundamental causes through my writings, and I hope that you will find more answers and solutions to these thorny issues in my latest and recently expanded post entitled “Misquotation Pandemic and Disinformation Polemic: Mind Pollution by Viral Falsity” and published at http://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2020/12/19/misquotation-pandemic-and-disinformation-polemic-mind-pollution-by-viral-falsity/

Too much is made of Goebbels’s “the big lie.” Fascism depends on continual lies and rewriting of history and of contemporary fact. Another definitive characteristic. See Winston’s job in the Ministry of Truth and the bs production statistics constantly broadcast by fascists regimes.
Bob Though it’s clear that “Fascism depends on continual lies and rewriting of history and of contemporary fact,” I would never say too much is made of the singular idea of The Big Lie. CBK
I don’t think that one can make the argument that fascists don’t still attempt to keep it in the family.
Kim Il-sung , Kim Jong-il Kim Jong-un
Stalin’s male children just happened to be drunken louts incapable of assuming the mantle. Stalin was terribly disappointed that they didn’t have the stuff to assume the mantle.
Mussolini’s either died or kept their heads down after what happened to their father.
Saddam Hussein was certainly grooming his sons to take over. Butboth were killed.
Three of Gaddafi’s sons were killed during the revolution against his government. One, Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi, was heir apparent, was jailed, and then was released. He has announced that he plans to run for president of Libya.
Trump was certainly grooming his children to take over after him. He has often alluded to his, even going so far as to post timelines for their presidencies over the coming decades.
Let me be clearer. When Goebbels spoke of what came to be known as THE big lie, he was not suggesting ONE big lie, and its a mistake to take the definite article seriously. Goebbels was talking about the efficacy for propaganda of big lies in general. Here are Goebbels’ words:
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
Trump lied thousands of times. But his biggest lie was that he won in a landslide but somehow Biden stole his victory. The fact that the election produced many Republican victories has not affected Trump cult’s willingness to believe the Leader.
Yes. It’s a big one. But the ones about asylum seekers being rapist and murderers and terrorists organized into caravans by Soros is pretty big, too. And the one about coronavirus being first, a hoax, and then, an attack by China–pretty big lies, resulting in a lot of needless death.
The lies all merge into the Newspeak adulation of Trump as the Savior. The font of truth.
Well said, Diane. Precisely.
Bob You are rightly adverting to the messiness of history. What I am talking about, however, is an operative set of principles at the very core of our thinking and of history itself.
First, under the principle of generation, kings have, but cannot choose, their blood-children, any more than you can choose someone to be your blood-child who is not already your blood-child . . . adopt yes, but not by blood. The example from your note is the fact that actual fascists in history think children are “louts,” or incapable of assuming leadership, or whatever.
Instead of assuming the flow of kingship, they are rather working from the principles intelligence/excellence while putting generation aside. It’s a slow migration, but it’s there if you understand the principles. In your example of leadership (even if it’s a bad take on what “excellence” means) is a different principle than generation, aka: whoever is my blood-related child is the next king or queen, and it cannot be otherwise. It’s the operating principles that hold the messiness of history together.
Another example of the power of the principle of generation is when, during the Russian revolution, the new regime killed the entire czarist family.
But my guess is that this is the wrong place for this discussion and probably not helpful for many here? CBK
I do understand what you are saying, CBK. I’m just saying that fascist leaders typically want to establish a dynasty. You are right, ofc, that that’s harder to do in a culture that does not believe in a principle of hereditary transfer of power. Note, however, that Western fascists take their symbolism and model of governance and even the very word, fascism, from the Rome of the emperors, with its hereditary privilege at the top.
Bob Yes, history IS messy . . . not only because of the tension between these two sets of principles, but also because history never exactly repeats itself. Even if two cells or cars are exactly the same, they still are “two cells.” Historical events are like that. What I’m talking about is the heretofore hidden dynamic order of it. With the advent of communications, of many difference cultures, and with civilization itself, that same generational principle stays with family and even nation; but also “pans out” to become the glue that holds together group identities–in those cases, the principle loses its blood-identity and becomes more identified with people who share interests and IDEAS.
But the tension is what Plato was adverting to when he has Socrates tell the son of a friend, who had committed murder, that the son could not prosecute his father in court and be right. In a more recent event, the brother of the uni-bomber turned him in but was not unaffected by the conflict of principles presented to him by the experience.
But again, I fear we are straying too far here for blog writing. CBK
CBK is right, of course, that modern fascist nation states have jettisoned the monarchical bloodline. Fascist leaders have a powerful motivation, however, for nepotism. If you arrogate all power to yourself and severely punish any deviation from the policies and principles you promulgate, others resent this. Resentment grows. It’s unstable. At some point, the only people the fascist can trust are family members, and even those, . . .
Bob Yup. But for the fascist, it’s not about the assumption of bloodline-power as with pre-modern or even some present kingships.
Rather, it’s about the convenience for the fascist of the natural (but not guaranteed) identity of children with THEIR family members. Fascists are still operating under what’s “best” (excellent in their distorted view) and not because these loyal people are their family members. It will be ONLY because they are loyal.
So they not only ignore the familial principle, which is essential to humanity, they USE it to their advantage–such is the state of their twisted consciousness. CBK
Thank you Bob Shepherd and Catherine King for your great exchanges about Fascism-Big Lies-Trump.
I think that the evils wrought by this unholy alliance has been aided and abetted by a general public that has come to accept two factors that nourish and precede Trump.
One is the acceptance (read expectation) that all politicians lie. It’s part of the political culture. Which leads to the second factor.
The press spokespeople (flacks, PR specialists, political consultants, spin doctors–take your pick) as currently constituted–whose job it is to create false narratives–are somehow tolerable in a democracy that depends on an informed public. They are the antithesis of this essential concept. They are unethical operatives–biased in their misrepresentations. Just as we would ban industries from polluting the air, we should keep these agents of deceit in check. How to do it? I don’t know.
Perhaps a return to some version of the Fairness Doctrine?

A former Trump official just accused Trump of a sick crime you won’t believe
President Donald Trump has had intense trouble finding loyalty from his allies.
They have turned on him under pressure time and time again.
And a former Trump official just accused Trump of a sick crime you won’t believe.
When somebody becomes an ally to President Donald Trump, they open themselves up to intense attacks from the Fake News Media.
Outlets like CNN will lie about them, and dig into their past to find any piece of dirt they can.
And following the election results, things are becoming even worse, with mainstream outlets pledging to try to stop Trump allies from ever being able to be employed again.
One of his earliest officials to turn on him was Anthony Scaramucci, who served as Press Secretary for eleven days.
After leaving the White House, Scaramucci became one of the most vocal anti-Trump voices, getting invites to attack Trump on CNN on a near daily basis.
And following violence at the Capitol, Scaramucci has taken his anti-Trump rhetoric to a new extreme.
Speaking to Anderson Cooper of CNN, he called Trump the “domestic terrorist of the 21st century,” likening him to Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.
Scaramucci said, “I think lawyers, legitimate lawyers are telling him that he’s in a lot of trouble. He incited a riot. He incited an insurrection. He’s arguably, at least in the 21st century, you could say Timothy McVeigh for the 20th century, but he is the domestic terrorist of the 21st century in terms of the history of the 21st century.”
Cooper further questioned him, asking “You think he’ll be viewed as a domestic terrorist?”
Scaramucci responded by stating that 50 years from now, presidential historians will be openly referring to him as a domestic terrorist.
“So you’ve got to step back, Anderson, and look at it objectively and look at it from 2071, not 2021. Yes, I do think he will be known throughout history as somebody that incited domestic terrorism,” Scaramucci concluded.
If anything, it was the Fake News Media who incited the violence at the Capitol.
They have spent four years riling up President Trump’s supporters, constantly lying about them.
And when there were real concerns about election integrity, they painted anybody who disagreed with the results as treasonous conspiracy theorists.
It shouldn’t be that shocking that with all of that stacked up, a small number of people would commit violence.
But there is no evidence that President Trump had anything to do with it.

Here are the results from a poll that RenewedRight.com had:
Do you think the Fake News Media incited violence at the Capitol?
Yes….95%
No….5%
Who would have thought that our president could cause so much hatred to spread across the country? I HOPE that Trump and his criminal children get put in prison and stay there for a LONG time. I wish Biden was having his inauguration virtually from a secure place. There are too many loonies walking around who have been encouraged by Trump to KNOW that Biden is an illegal president.

[NWI Times] FBI fears ‘insider attack’ on inauguration; all troops being vetted
U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, prompting the FBI to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event.
The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington following the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters. And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.
Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told The Associated Press on Sunday that officials are conscious of the potential threat, and he warned commanders to be on the lookout for any problems within their ranks as the inauguration approaches. So far, however, he and other leaders say they have seen no evidence of any threats, and officials said the vetting hadn’t flagged any issues.
“We’re continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” McCarthy said in an interview after he and other military leaders went through an exhaustive, three-hour security drill in preparation for Wednesday’s inauguration. He said Guard members are also getting training on how to identify potential insider threats.
About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals. And while the military routinely reviews service members for extremist connections, the FBI screening is in addition to any previous monitoring.
Multiple officials said the process began as the first Guard troops began deploying to D.C. more than a week ago. And they said it is slated to be complete by Wednesday. Several officials discussed military planning on condition of anonymity.
“The question is, is that all of them? Are there others?” said McCarthy. “We need to be conscious of it and we need to put all of the mechanisms in place to thoroughly vet these men and women who would support any operations like this.”
In a situation like this one, FBI vetting would involve running peoples’ names through databases and watchlists maintained by the bureau to see if anything alarming comes up. That could include involvement in prior investigations or terrorism-related concerns, said David Gomez, a former FBI national security supervisor in Seattle…

PRESS RELEASE: Franciscan Action Network Condemns Insurrectionist Interference in Electoral Process and Violence in the Capitol Building
Jan 6, 2021 | FAN, Press Releases
WASHINGTON D.C. – Franciscan Action Network utterly condemns today’s insurrectionist interference in our nation’s electoral process. We condemn the violence and lawlessness of rioters’ invasion of the U. S. Capitol and its explicit danger to the republic.
“Today was one of the most shameful days that I can remember in the history of our country,” said Franciscan Action Network Executive Director, Stephen Schneck. “What we have witnessed is an insurrection against the laws, the Constitution, and the democracy that is the United States. With all faithful Americans, I also call on President Trump to cease abetting such behavior, and to respect our laws and Constitution, to accept the peaceful transition of power, and to support the norms and processes of our sacred democracy.”With Franciscan-hearted people everywhere, we ask for prayers for the United States and its people. We ask for prayers for Members of Congress and Senators as they perform their certification of the election — and prayers for the police and National Guard who will work to defend our nation’s Capitol tonight and in the days ahead.
Franciscan Action Network is a Catholic organization. I worked as a hospice volunteer at St. Anthony in Crown Point, IN. It is part of the Franciscan network.
My first hospice patient died in October 2010 and my last patient died in Nov. 2020. I was unable to vist my last patient for months because of COVID. Her daughter was in contact with me. COVID at St. Anthony started in the Alzheimer’s wing of the hospital.

Good grief!! The ONLY good thing that can be said is that IQ45 didn’t try to pardon himself or his criminal children.
………………………………..
On his final full day in office, Trump granted clemency to 143 people, including former adviser Stephen K. Bannon, GOP mega-donor Elliott Broidy and former Republican members of Congress; but he did not preemptively pardon himself or his family.
I learned from watching TV that not all pardons are made public.
I think he figures that the family needs fifth amendment protection, so they are not compelled to throw each other under the bus like Trump would do if necessary.
GOOD! Maybe some justice will prevail. THese people have to be held accountable. Get that Republican House member!
Digital fingerprints are identifying Capitol rioters
…Identifying rioters has been easy because many of them posted pictures of themselves inside the Capitol Building. They posed with Capitol Police, took selfies in Statutory Hall, on the floor of the Senate, and in the speaker’s office, videotaped themselves and others rampaging through the building, and bragged publicly about their participation in the onslaught.
Through these actions, these individuals provided concrete evidence of illegal entry into the building, vandalism, assault, and mayhem. Unwittingly, they gave virtual confessions that would make Perry Mason or CSI attorneys squeal with delight. The public nature of this information has allowed law enforcement, investigators, and independent observers to piece together illegal behavior and identify possible perpetrators.
Social media also offers relevant material regarding planning and coordination on the part of rioters and legislators. There have been reports of a Republican House member using codewords for insurrection such as “Today is 1776” on the morning of the riots as a way to express support for participants. Others publicly posted information regarding the movements of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the key targets of the rioters. While we do not yet know the full extent of the planning and coordination, there is enough evidence to warrant a serious look at legislator culpability…

I would be angry too if I were always treated like crap. He DID apologize and ask for peace. You people are so full of hate u can’t even be a honest unbiased journalist. Did I bear anyone on the democrats side this summer apologize or try to stop the violence, rioting, destroying property and making g cities look like war ones? NO IS THE ANSWER! You need to put a mirror up when your making comments and see if you can stand to look at yourself when u blame Trump for everything and Bide and his party does no wrong! I can’t stand to read anything anymore because the media is so biased and sees only one side. How corrupt u think Trump is and think Biden us a God. I see Biden I see lies, not owning responsibility and tearing a country apart and not unity as he speaks. The democrats and Pelosi are so he’ll hellbent to take Trump down they’ve forgot their here to serve a d work for Pelosi. I think there should be others impeached. Your impeaching the wrong man.
Nancy Ennis: I can’t stand to read anything anymore because the media is so biased and sees only one side.
We are tired of biases that comes from distorted ‘alternative facts’. [The number of hate crimes spiked dramatically after Donald Trump became president using divisive and racist rhetoric.] In four years, President Trump made 30,573 false or misleading claims while in office. Updated Jan. 20, 2021.
You’ve been conned.
