This is a heartening photograph showing a line of whites, apparently all female, arms locked together, defending black protestors against the police.
I don’t recall whites standing up to defend black protestors in the 1960s.
We must all stand together against racism, injustice, and hatred.
😢
All of this is happening in the middle of a pandemic. Just wondering if there will be a spike of infections even with people wearing masks?
We appear to have called a timeout on the pandemic. Stay tuned.
The lack of social distancing I’ve seen on the last couple days in NYC — the world epicenter of the coronavirus—is astounding. The quarantine is over in this town. On the plus side, we’ll get to see if there are big hospitalization spikes in a month or so.
There actually were whites who stood up to defend African Americans in the 60’s
For example, Jonathan Daniels, who died when he pulled Ruby Sales out of the line of fire of a shotgun and took the blast himself.
But most people don’t read about that in the history books.
And though heartening when it happens, there is nonetheless a danger in highlighting such actions because it takes the focus off all the he unsung African American heroes .
In the case of Jonathan Daniels, the young African American whose life he saved — Ruby Sales — became a sort of foot note.
The very reason that the white women in that photo were asked to make a wall was because the risk of violence to them was significantly less than to the African Americans they were shielding.
I don’t say this to detract from what they did, but merely to point out a fact
The FACT that people are still — over half a century later — treated so differently (one treated as human and the other not) based purely on their skin color pretty much says it all.
Yes. It is shameful that “white privilege” had to be enlisted in the first place. It is also true that some white people have been part of the resistence, among them several of my mentors as an undergraduate and later in my first years of teaching.
Other whites died fighting for the cause of civil rights for all.
I think of Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, who joined James Chaney of Mississippi; all three were murdered and buried. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Chaney,_Goodman,_and_Schwerner in 1964; Chaney was black, Schwerner and Goodman were white.
Viola Liuzzo, a white woman from Detroit, was murdered by the KKK in 1965. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_Liuzzo
There were others, but I can’t remember a mass protest by whites to shield and protect black demonstrators.
Attached for your reader’s attention is the op-ed, America’s Pandemic Racism is as Heart-Wrenching as it is Sickening”
Yes! Yes! and Yes!
I saw another photo on Facebook where a group of African American men are linking arms to shield a lone white policeman from a crowd of protesters.
Photoshop?
Supposedly in Louisville but I can’t vouch for authenticity.
This meme from the police (hey, we’re victims, too!) is just too automatic as a defense. I would be amazed if (in response to G. Floyd), a group of African American men formed a protective circle around a White police officer.
In the first place, the White officer wouldn’t allow himself to be surrounded like that. And, although the group of African American men might protect the rare officer that stood up for them in the past against a White lynch mob, in today’s situation it doesn’t seem likely.
Still, anything is possible. Neither do I have firsthand knowledge of the incident.
I was pleased to see a large crowd of black and white people protesting against racism in Pensacola. This area is big on Trump, the Bible and the military. Previous protests of any kind were generally led by a dozen or so old hippie types. This time the crowd was black, white. young and old with at least a hundred and fifty people holding signs against racism and police brutality. It was a pleasant surprise.
OK! Things are looking up!
This is what it will take, but to a much larger degree. People must realize that the concept of ‘race’ is used to divide and conquer. A far more relevant division is economic. Those of us who are not in the ruling class must understand our similarities in order to destroy our oppressive system before we can afford the luxury of petty disputes involving skin color (or eye color, or fashion, or whatever).
👍👍
protest in Nashville turned to breaking windows and looting before a police presence forced people to go home. I watched the video as two white ladies stood opposite the police. It seemed to me that they were imitating this picture, but there wereonly two of them and the crowd was not very organized behind them. The police were showered with water bottles thrown at them.
