Watch this powerful 2-minute video, in which civil rights leader Jitu Brown tells the dramatic story of the Dyett hunger strike in Chicago, which lasted 34 days and compelled the city to keep Dyett open and invest $16 Million in the new Dyett.
Jitu Brown leads the Journey for Justice, which is leading a national campaign to stop school closings, privatization, and charter schools. They are fighting to create thousands of community schools.
This video was created by videographers Michael Elliot and Kemala Karmen. It was funded by the Network for Public Education.

Many Superintendents called for a moratorium on the charter school movement, of curse since this is a democracy newspapers pick and choose who gets attention. Teacher unions are all over the place. This is not a new idea at least 20 years old. However there is so much money being made on Wall Street. Just maybe parents will pay attention and realize that there children are not getting that “quality education”

“Reform” has been a continuous form of sabotage and politicking against public education from the start of privatization. It has also been class and race warfare. Urban schools have been seriously underfunded for decades. Privatization is no solution. It is another separate and unequal path for children of color. The only fundamental, democratic solution is to invest in strong, equitable public schools. Instead of blaming for the devastating impact of poverty, states and cities need to act responsibly and meet their legal obligation to educate all students. They should not be able to pass the buck to greedy, uninformed corporations that treat students like a commodity. The public is tired of this bait and switch called “reform.” As Brown said, “Don’t believe the hype!”

I’m a Democrat but more and more I’m thinking maybe we should get rid of the US Department of Education.
I’m listening to DeVos recite ed reform slogans before Congress. They can’t point to a single thing they do that benefits any public school student, anywhere.
I read the list of invitees to the school safety meeting. One of the “experts” is a former Dep of Ed employee who now runs a “security” consulting company.
They’re planning on selling useless expensive garbage to public schools again, this time under the “safety” sales pitch.
I knew “school security” would turn into another way to suck public school dollars out of public schools and into the pockets of “experts”.
Please stop taking advice from these people. if you have a bad public school they won’t help and if you have a solid public school they will ruin it. Demand better.

Hell hath frozen over. There are many people on the right and the left, who advocate for the abolition of the Dept of Ed. I agree with you, Chiara.
