A local TV station in San Diego tried to find a teacher who approves of Trump’s idea to arm teachers if they are good with guns. The station couldn’t find even one.
“”Putting more guns into our schools and classrooms is going to do nothing to protect our students and educators,” said Lindsay Burningham, President of the San Diego Teachers Association, the union representing teachers in the San Diego Unified School District. “Our students need more counseling and nursing. Our students need more books and art and music, not guns.”
However, it did find a truck driver who liked the idea.

It’s the gun, stupid.

You have to watch out for those arts students, especially the kids in theater and broadcasting programs where they learn self-presentation skills in front of an audience and are taught to share credit.
Also be careful of journalism programs. Some of the students at Parkland HS who have been so articulate and forthcoming in the midst of the killing and wounding on their classmates were enrolled in those programs. Their teachers and parents should be proud.

They are a testament to what you, Diane, and all the other gifted teachers have been saying and writing about our schools for years.

I”d rather take more grad hours than sign up to be shot. How stupid does Trump think we are? We care about the children under our care and bringing more guns into the classroom is a recipe for disaster. I’m really getting tired of the argument that ‘more guns means safety’. No other country has this problem and we still can’t get Congress or the Orange IDIOT to do anything. Strict gun control laws do not cancel out our God given rights as citizens.
[Do more post grad hours even mean a higher step on the pay scale these days? This was before testing results determined whether or not teachers were any good at their jobs.]

“How stupid does [our Dear Leader] think we are?”: Quite. He became president by betting on that very premise. And he “governs” the same way.

Some may argue that he became president because of Dems pushing out Bernie.

Yes. Guns never kill people. Right? People kill people, and, oh – I forgot – it’s those people with, um-m-m-m-m, guns.
It’s like saying that if we launch a nuclear weapon, it’s the PEOPLE we have to worry about pushing that button, not the actual capacity of the nuclear bomb.
But wait a minute. Why is it that I, yes – glorious me – can’t get hold of a nuclear warhead. WHAT’s the big deal. I’m not mentally unhealthy.
It’s NOT fair. It’s MY right of free speech to carry and concealed a nuclear warhead.

I’ve been complaining about the same thing — sort of.
But I want my own nuclear sub that carries a load of missiles tipped with nuclear bombs or if that isn’t available, how about B-2 Spirit stealth bomber with a load of nuclear bombs?

Or Utah, which has held classes for conceal carry for teachers for years. I had a student teacher about 10 years ago that carried.

Even if teachers armed themselves with trucks or massive robotic exoskeletons, they would not be able to protect society from Trump Kong. We need a major dose of sanity here. He need to helicopter it in and dump it, because Trump Kong has broken through the wall, and we are all here in what we thought was a yellow submarine but is actually Scalp Island, or Gold Sharpie Estate.

Nobody’s ever cared what teachers wanted, really, though anyway, right? most of the time.

Trump won’t give this talking point up. Now, I’m seeing on Facebook posts about how its all the teachers’ faults. They always get back to this. Its really sick. Remember this nonsense: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/12/09/rudy-giuliani-teachers-unions_n_6296038.html Well, its going to come back around. Teachers, to the republicans, are the cause of all of society’s ills. Do any of us really believe that now the republicans care about what happens to students and teachers? If they arm teachers, so what … a few less teachers when they get shot at by first responders who mistake them for the shooter. Schools are doing less with less; where are the counsellors? Where are the child study teams? For that matter, where are the school supplies, and why are there overcrowded classrooms, and no nurses? Gym teachers are spread across several schools in the same district where there is p.e. once per week. ‘
I don’t know how much more teachers should be asked to carry – but guns isn’t on my list.
Fully funded schools is a better idea; bring back the counselors, nurses, etc. Support the whole school and stop demonizing teachers and public school kids.

The corporate reformers will use this as an excuse to hire anyone to be a teacher and get rid of the professionals. All the corporate reformers’ recruits have to do is be willing to carry a firearm and shoot at a hate-filled, angry, lunatic shooter no matter how many innocent children they might hit.
The lunatic shooter shows up on a campus and the truck driver, illiterate, former-felon teacher who once belonged to a bike gang walks out and starts emptying clips in the general direction of where he thinks the shooter is.
Fill an entire school with teachers like that and when that 0.0009 percent chance that a lunatic shooter will show up at their school walks on campus emptying clips from his AR-15 at every student and teacher in sight, all the teachers pull out their handguns, aim in the general direction of the shooter, close their eyes and keep pulling the trigger until the clip is empty and then they reload and start over until they don’t hear anyone shooting anymore.
This is a preview of Trumpland or should we call it Kochland, or Waltonland, or GOPland, or NRAland?
And Eva Moskowitz goes one better. She tells he armed teachers to just shoot the kids that don’t follow the rules. She says, “If you see a six-year-old walking down the hall between classes and his cheeks aren’t puffed out, shoot him in the head. We’ll just claim that the shooting was justified because the kid was a hate-filled, lunatic and we stopped him/her from shooting us one day.”

One of my teacher friends talked about this. We got a kick out of the idea of professional development that would be needed to teach teachers to be quasi policemen. How good would it be? One time half an hour faculty meeting. That should just about do it. It’s what passes for a lot of PD. Rediculous. He’s a former policeman. He’s well versed in police protection. He stated that he would be out of the business if that happened. Tells me what a terrible idea this really is.

We must remember that Trump has no experience with the military, firearms or school. He is probably basing this on having watched the movie “Kindergarten Cop.”
