This is a good read, except for the phony upbeat ending, which an editor must have inserted. The writer knows that Trump will always be Trump and will never be Lincoln.
Opinion: Why Trump won’t stand up against hate
http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/13/opinions/charlottesville-trump-bully-cowardice-dantonio-opinion/index.html
The article was written by Michael D’Antonio, one of his biographers.
Trump has played the race card all his adult life. There’s no reason to expect him to change.

Diane, In todays Sunday Tulsa World, August 13th, there is a section called Opinion. They give three perspectives on vouchers. There is a column by Peter Montgomery, Charlotte Hayes and a third one by Neil Campbell and Abel McDaniels. One for vouchers and two not for vouchers.
And in the same paper in section 1, A 14, there is a column on Betsy Devos.
The arguments are all the same. Perhaps you want to read what is being published in a conservative Tulsa, Oklahoma newspaper.
I read your columns all the time. i have been a public school teacher for 40 years.

This latest Trump just put out a vicious attack campaign against his Democrat “enemies” who are persecuting him. TIME Magazine, CNN, New York Magazine are aghast at the message this sends;
http://time.com/4898644/trump-campaign-ad-charlottesville-protest/
http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/13/politics/donald-trump-campaign-ad/index.html
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/08/trump-campaign-puts-out-abrasive-ad-after-call-for-unity.html
Got that? Trump can’t utter so much as a bad word that calls out, in particular the racist groups such as the KKK, Nazis, etc. who are responsible for the violence this weekend, nor can he condemn the hate-filled, racist ideology that underlies these groups.
“Hey, Nazi’s, KKK, etc. you all just got a free pass on what you did yesterday, and also a message loud and clear: you now have the Green Light to go and do it some more!”
At the same time, Trump drops a multi-million-dollar ad campaign attack those whom Trump claims the real bad guys in our country — those evil Democrats opposing his agenda. Again, nothing in these ad says boo against the Nazi’s, KKK, etc. who went violent in their rally yesterday … implicitly sending the message to them and to everyone else that the Nazi’s, KKK, etc. are Trump’s allies.

It’s “Democratic.” I stop reading anything that buys into disrespectful, incorrect use of the term Democratic Party.

GregB, I’ll give a pass to Jack for the content of his post, with which I heartily agree. He may be just referring to the way right-wingers speak. Perhaps he’d do better in this case to enclose “Democrat” in quotation marks.
Remember the way Trump raked Clinton over the coals for not using the phrase “radical Islamic terrorism”? Now the terrorism comes from native-born whites, and his false equivalency is making other Republicans look good simply for expressing boilerplate decency.
This is the worst failure of a U.S. president to rise to the occasion of murderous violence since Richard Nixon blamed the protesters for the killings at Kent State. Richard Spencer and David Duke got the message.
The students who stood up to the white nationalists, however, remind me of the student who faced the tanks in Tiananmen Square.

Trump sees his enemies as anyone who does or says anything that he perceives as not supporting him 100% at all times. That mostly includes legislators, governors, or whatever public officials with a “D” or “Democratic Party” or whatever permutation of that next to their name.
However, that also includes some Republicans — i.e. the ones who voted against Trumpcare.
Based on last weekend’s one-two punch of …
1) Trump’s statement on Saturday (August 12) that “many sides” are at fault in regards to any violence in Charlottesville, or that “many sides” have a moral equivalency with each other — the neo-Nazi’s, KKK, etc. are on the same moral plane as the people protesting them;
2) Trump’s multi-million-dollar ad campaign attacking his enemies, released yesterday (Sunday, August 13) which is aimed at those mostly Democrats, and a few Republicans, but says nothing about the neo-Nazi’s, KKK, etc. that committed Saturday’s violence …
… Trump is implicitly claiming those neo-Nazi’s, KKK, etc. as his allies— allies that may have gotten a little carried away with violence, but heck, don’t be too hard on them, because don’t forget … “many sides” did this.
Read what David Duke, the neo-Nazi’s, KKK, the Daily Stormer are saying about that one-two punch. On-line, and in interviews, they’re saying that this shows that Trump’s our guy. Trump’s endorsing us! Trump’s got our backs!
When asked to repudiate them or their support of him, Trump refuses.
That’s dangerous.
Trump just gave and is giving the neo-Nazi’s, KKIK, David Duke his approval, and the Green Light to go ahead and to more violence and violent demonstrations, and do so with greater intensity, and greater frequency.

If we lose belief in the checks and balances of our government we will hasten a revolution or an out and out coup. Right now we have a coup without uniforms but no less a military takeover partnered with alt-right, neo-nazi sympathizers (civilian enforcers), and the industrialist complex. Eisenhower called this right from both inside and outside of the oval office and tried to warn us.
Trump is so clueless to himself and so rolled into his own head/narcissism and egomaniacal thinking he has become the puppet of the puppet master and is what Dr. Phil McGraw calls a right-fighter. You will never see an apology of worth from this despot and he is capable of throwing his own children under the bus. If what is true about the history of his namesake Donald Jr. is correct (he did not speak with his father for a year after he left his mother and worked as a bartender in Colorado) he is only protected now by having this tyrants name (he will protect his own name before the child/man ) one of his main characteristics is vengeance and a dark side of hateful proportion along with his sense and understanding of privilege . He is diabolical and a identified DSM V Sociopath who believes no one can touch him. He is the guy that can order the hit and then believe he had nothing to do with the outcome.
Russia didn’t do it! According to Trump there are no rules when it comes to love or money. and genetic dynasty building is his own game. Money and the art of the deal has no boundaries even while he has flawed business decision making but others lose while he gets out holding their money as his.
Mueller will dig-in a straight ace idealistic investigation only equal to the corrupt and hateful path this administration is on. The GOP need to get their big boy and girl pants on and use the checks and balances of our country sooner then later to get this despot and his cronies out of there if the military path fails (he thinks he owns the generals too!) ! Trump is wanting to go after the Constitutionn and is in the process of tearing down the fabric of government and acting like a dictator. He is limited and scattered in intelligence and has a hate of the intellectuals who find their way to government, universities, business, anywhere! He is disrespectful of knowledge and the importance of governance and diplomacy skills. What he is right about is he has all the characteristics to be what he is and has always wanted to be a vicious but loved (a mental contradiction) dictator or king. He has bamboozled the public but most of all himself. History does repeat itself and the worst of history is upon us. Look at the list of characters and how this is all being put into place and if you know history or are of a certain age it will all come clear wrap[ed in fear! Looking through the window of time both past and ahead as we are on the precipice of a new age in the present!

He can not condemn white Nationalist terrorism .Because he is a White Nationalist.
Does not get any simpler than that .
It was one thing leading the Birther movement. Another surrounding yourself with Nazi Gorka or alt-rt Bannon. But when after decades of,,DNA evidence ,an exonerating confession by the real perpetrator , winning 41 million in civil lawsuits for false prosecutions and convictions., he still insists on the guilt of the 5 young teens.
Teens who spent years in jail for crimes they did not commit after a confession immediately withdrawn had been extracted by NYPD detectives in 30 hr marathon interrogations of 14-16 yr old’s . Teens who witnessed full page ads taken out at the time by Trump calling for the restoration of the death penalty for their crime.
Very simple he is a racist —————–. ———————. (censored)

Except for number 7
There is a false equivalence between ANTIFA and the White Nationalists . I would buy the equivalence if this were an anti globalization demo on their part. An anarchist demonstration against capitalism . Had more good Germans came to the streets of 1930 Germany to do battle against Brown Shirts perhaps 40 million would not have died.
Which also is dismissing the fact that the vast majority of anti fascist protesters were peaceful and not associated with ANTIFA .Including Clergy attacked by a Nazi/ Klan group armed and prepared ,who came to do battle and violently disrupt
Make no mistake if this had been a leftist demonstration . The FBI would be diverting all resources to rounding up the participants .

Is it just what I read or is there a grand silence from our largest corporations and many in Congress, in statehouses and legislatures?
A handful of Republicans have stepped up to denounce Trump, but in Ohio the Republican spokesperson, Blaine Kelly selectively quoted what Trump said, claiming, in effect that everything will be fine if we just follow Trump and “come together as Americans with love for or nation and true affection for each other.”

Laura,
I won’t be “coming together” with fascists. I tweeted David DUkr that he murdered Heather Heyer. I don’t sing kumbaya with racists, KKK, and Nazis.
Let Trump explain why Bannon is in the White House: Mr. Alt Right.

Nor will I. Here is some news from a small corner of Corporate America—mostly manufacturing.
https://www.statnews.com/2017/08/14/ken-frazier-merck-trump/
Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier, J.D., among the few CEOs who are African-American, said Monday that he would step down from Trump’s Manufacturing Council, citing “a responsibility to take a stand against violence and extremism.” https://twitter.com/Merck/status/897065338566791169
Less than an hour after his announcement Trump Tweeted:
“Now that Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma has resigned from the President’s Manufacturing Council, he will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES! “
Here are the members of Trump’s Manufacturing Council. In my opinion, it they are silent about Trump, aiding and abetting hate groups, then the workers at these businesses, shareholders, and the press need to out them. Their silence functions as an endorsement.
It is worth noting that Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla Motors Inc, also internet companies Zip2 and Paypal Holdings Inc resigned from Trump’s Manufacturing Council when Trump withdrew the US from Paris climate accord.
Here are the other members of the Manufacturing Council should be speaking out, if not resigning, then speaking together and in following the lead of Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier.
Andrew Liveris, CEO of Dow Chemical Co
Bill Brown, CEO of Harris Corporation, previously held senior leadership roles at United Technologies Corporation, including Carrier Corporation—moving some jobs from Indiana to Mexico.
Michael Dell of Dell Technologies Inc, 40,000 employees and $74 billion in revenue from IT.
John Ferriola, CEO of Nucor Corporation, steel company.
Jeff Fettig, CEO of Whirlpool Corporation, aslo a lead director on Dow Chemical’s board, and on the board of the Kohler Co.
Mark Fields, CEO of Ford Motor Company
Alex Gorsky, CEO of Johnson & Johnson, said to be a “longtime advocate of diversity and inclusion.”
Greg Hayes, CEO of United Technologies Corporation, aerospace and building systems
Marillyn Hewson, CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation
Jeff Immelt, CEO of General Electric Company
Jim Kamsickas, CEO of Dana Inc., manufacturer of mechanical systems for automobiles
Klaus Kleinfeld CEO of Arconic Inc formerly known as Alcoa Corp, former CEO of Siemens.
Brian Krzanich, CEO, Intel Corporation
Richard Kyle, CEO Timken Co bearings manufacturer
Mario Longhi former CEO of United States Steel Corporation
Denise Morrison, CEO, Campbell Soup Company,
Dennis Muilenburg, CEO of Boeing Co
Doug Oberhelman recently retired CEO of Caterpillar Inc.
Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of Under Armour Inc
Michael Polk, CEO of Newell Brands Inc (merger of Rubbermaid and Jarden Corp).
Mark Sutton, CEO of 3M Co.
Wendell Weeks, CEO of Corning Incorporated
Also on Trump’s Manufacturing Council
Richard Trumka, President of the 12.5-million-member AFL-CIO and Thea Lee, deputy chief of staff for AFL-CIO.
Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, a 2007 partnership of American manufacturers and the United Steelworkers.
Time for these major employers and would-be leaders to denounce Trump’s passivity toward hate groups.
And that is just for starters. How about the US Chamber of Commerce, for example. How about DeVos? and so on.
This is no time for silence.
