Daniel Katz describes Carl Paladino’s many inappropriate remarks, crowned by his recent rant against President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. Paladino insists his remarks were not racist, but the only way to believe that is not to read the words he wrote.
He is a racist, by any definition of the term. He is also sexist and homophobic.
And he is an enthusiastic backer of charter schools, some of which rent space from his company.
Katz notes that none of the charter school cheerleaders have said peep about Paladino. He and his reputation make it hard to regurgitate the line that charter schools are “the civil rights issue of our time.”

What does this say about the people in Buffalo who voted for him? He is slime.

Probably not much, those that voted for him probably do not send their children to public schools , would love vouchers and lower property taxes. Of course I know nothing about Buffalo politics but my guess is he did not run in a minority district.

It it always those with money who are the most likely to vote — and who care the least for spending tax money on “other people’s children.”

Families for Excellent Schools is too busy spending money attacking Mayor de Blasio for not continuing Mayor Bloomberg’s policy of giving their pet charter schools the complete run of the NYC DOE to concern themselves with the racism exhibited by a pro-charter school board member!
As long as you allow charters to proliferate with no oversight, your racism and any other kind of ignorance you demonstrate is perfectly fine. You can say what Palladino said or you can claim that 20% of the at-risk (non-white) 5 year olds in your school are violent and that’s not worthy of criticism.
Only if you dare to demand oversight for charters will those organizations spend millions to attack you.

MSNBC news reports tonight that the Board asked him to resign. No details.

I believe it will have to be an impeachment? A long and expensive way to get rid of a nuisance. The lawyers will make tons of money though and the school district will have to spend resources that would be better spent on students. It’s a shame that there are so many of these people living amongst us.

Honestly, where some see racism, I see competition. Insidious, heinous, vile competition. The Carl Paladinos of the world have learned to value themselves by competing to devalue some others, to build themselves up by competing to tear down some others, to always compete to win at the expense of some others. Paladino brings forth sorrow more so than anger. He exemplifies education sans wisdom and resulting consequences that make him unfit to serve in any capacity the common good based in democratic principles and practice. Accordingly, his being on the Buffalo school board is utterly oxymoronic.

If Paladino were a Buffalo Public Schools student, would the district code of conduct allow his wishes to be published in a high school newspaper?

Very interesting question!
In terms of Paladino specifically….and how our schools run as a matter of course.

As there should be zero tolerance for school board members, there should be zero tolerance for presidents.
