Julie Borst, a parent in New Jersey, reports that New Jersey administrators are going to absurd lengths to compel students to take the PARCC tests, no matter what their parents want. Why do the administrators engage in dictatorial and abusive actions to force these pointless tests on children? Why is their need so urgent? The tests provide no useful information to help children. They have no educational value. Their only function is to rate students and compare them to other students their age.
Borst says flat out: No. It is my child, not yours and not the state’s.
She writes:
“I’ve been watching in horror as the PARCC testing “season” began in New Jersey last week. I am unabashedly in the Opt Out corner. Oh, sorry, forgot, this is New Jersey, where we play word games. “Refuse” was the word of choice last year, as opting out is not “allowed.” This year “refusing” is getting kicked back to parents too. NJDOE has been in full spin mode for several months and we know the districts with the highest refusals rates from last year have caught an earful.
“First, though, let’s be crystal clear about something. When a parent opts out /refuses /insert your choice of it’s-never-going-to-happen here, they are NOT asking for anyone’s permission. They are very simply informing you of what they are choosing for their child. You are expected to respect that decision. End of story.
“Parents aren’t opting out because the test is hard. Amazingly, that insipid thought is still floating around and a “news” source published it (I refuse to link to the NYPost. Go Google that hot mess of “journalism” if you must.). They. We. I. Am doing it because public education has become a marketplace for the next best shiny, never-been-tested, device, curriculum, test, insert latest crap your local board of ed got suckered into buying…Chromebooks anyone? None of which has anything to do with educating our children.
“Leading up to the testing window, there were stories of stupid stuff…reward parties, bids for prom, getting out of taking the English final exam, the cheer on PARCC videos…demonstrating the level of desperate these people have sunk.
“Once the testing started, truly awful stories started pouring in, and continue to this week, about how districts were handling students whose parents refused PARCC. You really have to wonder what is going on inside the heads of these teachers, principals, superintendents, and county superintendents.
“I wonder if they have thought about the real damage done to the trust that any really good school must have with its students and parents. Listen carefully, hurting children is not going to get you that trust. You’re going to lose it immediately, and there will be nothing you can do to get it back.”
She then tells stories about how children were treated by administrators who decided they should be punished for opting out and sought to make them as uncomfortable as possible.
This will embolden parents to opt out in greater numbers next year.

“Edited to add: A little while ago, a mom got in touch with me about her 9th grade son’s experience. Mom had turned in her refusal to the district superintendent two weeks before PARCC began. It was acknowledged and her son was told to bring a book, he would be sitting in the testing room, but would be allowed to read.
“Day one came along, “he came prepared to do so Monday morning, only to find the admin plop a chrome book down in front of him. He said “I’m not supposed to take the test, My mom sent in a refusal letter” and the teacher completely ignored him. He raised his hand and said it again, this time to have a proctor say “that’s not how it works.” At that point he was feeling totally defeated and intimidated, so he went ahead and took the test. He was so upset when he got home. He said he was actually afraid to say or do anything further for fear of getting in trouble. Frankly, 2 days later I’m still speechless.””
So now we have to start giving our kids SERE training before testing training. “Okay, son, if they hold you in a windowless cell and make you stare at the wall, here’s how you keep from going insane….”

I really hate to go all Godwin’s Law here, but too many districts and states are skating way too close to authoritarianism, and thinking that they have the right to compell students, and punish those who do not comply, regardless of what the parents want. (And, in fact, way too many areas aren’t even “skating too close,” they have already crossed the line.)

Grrr! I am a NJ taxpayer (whose children thankfully graduated just prior to the onset of common core & PARCC implementation). You can be sure if any such thing happened to my kid, super & principal would in short order receive a letter from my attorney.

I strongly believe that a few lawsuits would help districts, principals, and maybe even the state to realize that this testing is going to come back an bite them. After a few successful lawsuits there will be a huge back off from testing.

Even a stern letter on parent’s attorney’s letterhead can give school admin sufficient courage to walk back egregious behavior committed due to state DOE bullying.
Likewise I learned as a parent of three teen boys that local cops are wont to pull over vehicles whose young male drivers display even a tiny hint of ‘erratic driving’– after having tailed those drivers [displaying nothing other than driving while young male drivers] & running the plate to see if there’s maybe a warrant outstanding [including failing to appear in court for overdue parking]– & proceed to [illegally] demand all passengers to step out while they conduct a vehicle search. My son at 16 accepted a ride home from a public rock concert from a friend & her boyfriend; the search uncovered a weed-pipe [‘paraphernalia’] under a rug, which resulted in his being arrested. Fortunately we have a neighbor criminal atty who is onto our local cops’ game; our son was exonerated & the arrest expunged.
After that experience, we had our 3 sons view a youtube demonstration of how to legally respond to a cop pullover. And all thereafter carried that atty’s card, to be presented upon any subsequent pullovers. There was one additional occasion; presenting the atty’s card caused the cop to think again & wave the car on.

Educators mistreating children and creating a situation designed to have a child become uncomfortable because the child’s parent made a personal choice based on his/her values???
Um, what part of unethical do these schooll administrators not understand???
When I send my child to school, I expect every one of the school employees and volunteers to care for my child in a respectful, kind, and loving manner!
When I was a school employee (school counselor) this was my job performance standard: “I will help, advise, and care for your child with the same level of care I would have for my own child. I will treat your child with the same kindness and respect and love that I would have for my own child.”
And educators wonder where the public gets the perception that educators just don’t care about kids? Sad.
No, not just sad. Criminal.
Our children are our nation’s most important resource. Our future, literally, depends upon them.

A teacher in my school is telling the students that colleges and employers look at the BS Test scores. TOTALLY lying to students. I can’t stand it. And the school is offering I-Pads to kids who “do their best” on the testing (in a drawing), leaving out kids who opt-out, and any kid who doesn’t “do their best.” I have no idea how one measures that. I’m so furious at the abuse of testing.

At my kid’s CA HS, the administration pressures the teachers hard, weekly, to pressure the kids, hard. Classroom grades are affected, guilt trips are laid bare by teachers, school privileges, honors, celebrations and awards are refused anyone who opts out including honors recognition, etc.
It’s cruel, vindictive, outrageous. To shoulder the burden of political matyrdom on these kids is just unconscienable.
As a parent, I just don’t even know where to begin to sputter my outrage.
I’m so frustrated by all this. Teachers I *like* and who are politically overtly not aligned with any of this ideology, are metaphorically twisting kids’ arms.
I thought bullying was out of favor in schools these days. I started my school career on day one with a quick arm-twist behind the curtain. I thought this scene had all changed nowadays. And I suppose it has inasmuch as the curtain is now psychological.
Shame! Shame! Shame!
p.s. The argument in justification is that the kids “owe” the good results of their testing to the school to increase enrollment.

My administration puts the thumbscrews on teachers, too. I REFUSE to tell the kids how “important” these tests are, or otherwise encourage the testing. It may end up costing me my job, but I WILL NOT lie to kids or twist arms. I’m supposed to protect kids.

A teacher at the school is in teacher jail rumor has it in part precipitated by encouraging of last year’s huge opt out. No way to verify this.
