Tim Farley is principal of the Ichabod Crane Middle School in upstate New York.
He is also a member of the board of New York State Allies for Public Education, the leaders of Opt Out in New York.
And he has a great sense of humor and timing!
He told his eighth grade students that if they read 850 books this year, he would dance for them at the end of the school year. They read 869. Watch Tim Farley dazzle students, teachers, and parents!

I check this blog time to time. Same Ol stuff. Good luck with everything Diane. This is one of the most negative, self defeating blogs, with endless information that is going absolutely nowhere. Five years from now it will be the same or similar headings. Enjoy your summer! If I feel the need to be depressed, I will certainly skim your blog.

What a strange post to pick for venting! Please don’t bother to skim; you seem to be able to depress yourself with no help.

Jason, so sorry you are depressed. See your doctor and get some help.

I would be depressed if it wasn’t for this blog….I thought I was the only one who saw what was going on…..good to know there is a whole network of people aware. Thank you Diane.

Diane,
I too am done. Your focus has become singularly obtuse. You were an administrator, you have an administrative mindset, and you can’t see the truth outside of the narrow perspective that you have chosen. I guess you feel that I need to see a doctor too.
I won’t be bothering you anymore with my views or my prescriptions to cleanse the system.
Good luck , Ian

Not a doctor, a therapist to help you with your power and control issues. Apparently you don’t understand whose blog this is. Anyway, buh bye. You’ll be missed.

This Principal is great. I am sending the clip to my building Principal. She would probably do something silly like this to motivate the kids.
…and Jason and Ian. You are a bit behind in the process.

I think that the ‘fight’ stage is where we’re at. The two of you seem to be stuck at ridicule.

I am beginning to have a sense that Jason and Ian may be part of an effort to cast doubt on Diane Ravitch and her blog. Too little. Too late.
There is absolutely no connection between their characterization of the blog as “negative” and “narrow” and the joyful clip celebrating kids for reading books. How does this become part of both denunciations of Dr. Ravitch’s work? Is there now a feeble attempt to condemn and detract from it?
Let’s see if more such cracked comments appear in a losing campaign to portray the blog as pointless and “obtuse.” And, by inference then, we followers must be a gullible audience that keeps coming back to watch a 3D movie called Diane’s Dopes and Dupes.

Mr. Farley keep those students reading. Can’t wait to see what he proposes for next year!
With over 21 million hits, I don’t believe this blog needs to defend itself. We knew that when parents were informed about the real purpose of the school reform movement they would fight back. This blog has given us a way to keep the parents informed who in turn vote and lend their voices to legislators. Education was the number one priority among voters in my state in the last election. Yes, it will take time but directing parents to this blog has given them the talking points to make a difference.

Tim–you wouldn’t be related to Todd Farley (author of Making the Grades: My Misadventures in the Standardized Testing Industry) now, would you? If so, what a hoot!
