  1. I wish I could make it, for I like the book quote a lot. Getting from Marine Park back downtown tonight, however, is more than I can do. In spirit, however, I am there.

  2. Ummm ok 2 seconds ago I received notification of an update for my iPhone (would apply to iPad too) – I actually read patch notes though…last addition? New configuration options for education standardized testing…for everyone.

For Apple to include this as part of iOS is I believe at least unusual since this is the type of thing they’d usually let ppl design into apps…

  4. And speaking of the subject of “More Than a Score”… if anyone has recently read an “Answer Sheet” piece , “University President: Obama’s Orwellian Regs…” When you read the article you could ABSOLUTELY think it was reviewing what has been happening in public schools throughout America and then you realize… NO … this is what Obama is proposing for our nation’s education programs in universities… WHAT AN OVERREACHING DISASTER … do read the piece as it says it as it is (anyone who is a public school teacher has “been there” already… no shock as to what it will lead to…)

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2015/02/02/university-president-obamas-proposed-regs-on-teacher-education-are-orwellian/

Here is just one pertinent comment from the author of the article linked above:
…”Because this process is annual, the schools will be in a constant state of testing, test prep and more tests, and the data collection machinery alone will have to be astonishing. Did I mention the cost? Typical of people who have no real life experience with the cost of implementing regulations, the rule writers at Education Department claim the whole thing can be done for about $42 million over ten years…”

    1. This is just the resurrection of inBloom and systems like it.

They couldn’t get school systems to feed data on their students into the system, so now they’ll require school systems to do it to feed the data to colleges so they can produces these ratings.

I have yet to hear an answer to the question of how all the different longitudinal data systems would suddenly become magically aligned, producing enough reliable data on the same subjects for all students so as to place all college programs on the same scale.

This whole affair is a backhanded way at getting what was initially accepted piecemeal by states, and is being rejected piecemeal as it comes into reality.

This way, no fuzzy handholding and saber rattling with states. Do RttT so your teachers can receive federal funds or else you might find yourselves short of teachers – the only people who become teachers are those who don’t need loans for a full course of study.

      Losing teachers? Bonus!

    2. Excellent article thank you. FYI- Pearson is already pedaling their software packages to university math department and trying to convince professors to dump traditional math curriculum. After knowing this I’m certain TCC is about $$$

  5. Does anyone have directions to this event? Looks like a great opportunity to harass the megalomaniac from Albany.

Cuomo To Headline Success Academies Benefit

From the Capital NY Education Update:

CUOMO TO HEADLINE SUCCESS ACADEMY BENEFIT—Capital’s Eliza Shapiro: Governor Andrew Cuomo will be the keynote speaker at Success Academy’s annual spring benefit this April, according to an invite sent to Success employees this weekend. Cuomo and Success C.E.O. Eva Moskowitz officially became allies last winter, when Cuomo stepped into a battle between Moskowitz and Mayor Bill de Blasio, declaring he would ‘save charter schools’ at a massive Albany rally partially organized by Success. The event will be held April 20 at Cipriani 42nd Street in Manhattan, and will be co-chaired by Success board members Campbell Brown, Daniel Loeb, Joel Greenblatt, and Regina and John Scully. http://bit.ly/1tT6Edx

That event will come after the budget deadline, when Cuomo is expected to push for an increase to the charter cap, more money to charter schools and a host of new mandates to public schools that charters are free from.

Given all the money the Success people and other charter supporters have handed to Cuomo, it’s the least he can do to give a little back

    1. This Cipriani is right near Grand Central Station, in and around 42nd Street. Just ask a local police officer and they can tell you.

  6. Diane,

Please BE CAREFUL walking around outside. It’s so icy! Want you to be safe, given all you’ve been through.

    1. Thank you, Robert.

“More than a Score” book launch was very successful. Jesse Hagopian was wonderful. The surprise guests were Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray (they are related to Jesse Hagopian).

We had a great discussion. It is clear there is a growing movement to stop high-stakes testing.

At the end, Chirlane gave me a ride home.

      1. Excellent!

Safe and sound and glory bound. Sorry I could not make it, but I look forward to reading the book.

At this point, parents and taxpayers (and teacher are part of those two groups) are our biggest hope in achieving social justice.

  7. I plan to order mine soon.

Includes a preface by Diane Ravitch and a foreword by Alfie Kohn. That in itself is a strong recommendation to buy.

Go to Amazon for a short summary of the book as well as some samples of content.

Congratulations to all that organized and attended the book party.

    😎
