Thank you to Linda Hall of Connecticut for spotting this wall-sized graffiti in Hartford, Connecticut, which apparently is directly across the street from Capitol Prep Magnet School, the school managed by Steve Perry, outspoken critic of public schools, teachers, and unions.
When I spoke at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, I met the artist who created this wonderful graffiti. His name is Kris Schmolze. He is not only an artist but was formerly an art instructor at Perry’s school in Hartford.

Love it!
Love the location.
Love the message!
Just like finding a beautiful blooming flower which fought its way through a crack in the asphalt of an urban parking lot, determined to beautify the world.
Thanks!

There was a brief story by Kerri Provost, under the picture of the art work.
“A skate park might not be the first place you would look for commentary on the state of public education. This graffiti popped up on a structure that faces Capital Prep Magnet School and happens to be painted in that school’s colors.”
“Diane Ravitch, who we are guessing did not write this at a height requiring a ladder to reach, will be giving a lecture about the privatization of public schools. That free, public event will take place on October 8th at Quinnipiac University in Hamden.”
Provost went on to say in a comment that:
“I should mention, for people who are not familiar with Real Hartford, that this writing was in a skate park where graffiti *is* permitted.”
Perhaps it could be the cover for Diane Ravitch’s next book . . .

The brother of the Vice President of the United States was in York, Pennsylvania trying to sell people there on Charter Schools USA privatizing their entire school district.
And this gets absolutely no comment or attention from US media:
“Frank Biden (yes that Biden) steps up 2 #York PA mic 2 explain why he supports @CSUSA effort 2 improve the schools.”
It’s remarkable. He’s selling a commercial franchise to replace a Pennsylvania public school district and it’s just business as usual.
You can find videos of his sales pitch on YouTube. This is okay now, I guess?

Thanks for posting this info. Is there a list of relatives of politicians making money on education? There’s Neil Bush, Frank Biden…
How about at the state level?

Linda, I have written many times about the nepotism that accompanies privatization. Arizona has no laws banning nepotism or conflicts of interest in the charter industry. The head of Chicago’s UNO charter chain stepped down after news reports of contracts awarded to family members of executives; he was Rahm’s co-campaign manager. In Florida, the conflicts of interest pervade the legislature. See the Florida League of Women Voters report on charters in that state. Ohio is brimming with money scandals.

Corruption should be an intolerable affront to Americans.

The Connecticut wall art should be in every community, in every state in the nation. The name Diane Ravitch and her stand against corporatization of education should be as ubiquitous as the sightings of “Kilroy was here.”
