G.F. Brandenburg is a retired math teacher who taught in the DC public schools for many years. He also has a star turn in “Reign of Error.” Here is his review
And here is part 2.
He writes:
“This book gratifies me because it lays out in a concise and organized manner much of what I and a number of other education bloggers have been trying to point out for the last four or five years. Ravitch’s clear prose is a masterful summary of the evidence that the bipartisan “reforms” being committed against public education are not only ineffective by the yardsticks held up by these ‘reformers’, but are also resegregating our schools and foisting an inferior education onto our poorest kids.”
Resegregating of our schools is abetted by the educational policies of the Obama administration…our first black President. How “cool” is that!
Well, given his actions on many other fronts – militarism and the militarization of law enforcement, privacy and civil liberties, coddling of financial criminals and neoliberal economics – the question arises: is this a feature or a bug?
Obama has from the first been a dependable broker for the socially liberal, quasi reality-based wing of the ruling class. It’s hard to imagine that the more astute of his investors didn’t also see the potential for his melanin content and political persona to create dynamics that would neutralize the Left wing of the Democratic Party.
As it has largely done

Obama has taken opposite positions in office V. campaign statements on several issues such as transparency in government, education, staffing cabinet and other advisory positions with the “old Guard” that promoted policies that led to the financial meltdown. I don’t think history will be kind to Obama.
In other words, he lied, and never had any intention of fulfilling those promises.
Think Trojan Horse for an insecure ruling class.
Totally agree!
SINCE MY DAUGHTER HAS TAUGHT PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR THE PAST TWENTY YEARS AND MY HUSBAND FOR THIRTY BEFORE HER I WOULD L;IKE TO COMMENT….UNTIL THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN THE US….HOLDS PARENTS ACCOUNTABLE TO SEND A CHILD TO SCHOOL WITH SOME SIGN OF RESPECT FOR THEIR TEACHER..GOOD MORALS …. AND A FULL STOMACH …AND MOST OF ALL… GIVE THEIR CHILDREN A LITTLE OF THEIR TIME AND INTEREST IN THEIR EDUCATION …ALL THE PROGRAMS IN THE WORLD WON’T HELP…AND I AM SURE YOU KNOW THIS!!! PUBLIC EDUCATION MIGHT END UP SCHOOLS FOR THE LEFT BEHINDS..EMOTIONALY, ‘PHYSICALLY , FINANCIALLY,……. PUBLIC TEACHERS HAVE TO DEAL WITH THESE PROBLEMS……AND TRY TO TEACH THEM…AND IN THE STATE WE ARE IN THE THIRD LOWEST PAID IN THE NATION…..,
