The New Yorker magazine has a contest each week. On the last page of each issue is a cartoon without a caption. Readers are invited to dream up a caption, and the best one wins.
Now here is our contest. Jeb Bush, Bill Gates, Mike Bloomberg, and Oprah are meeting at a swank island resort off the coast of South Carolina. The news story suggests it is a secret conference convened by Bill.
Question: Why are they meeting?
Ready, set, go.

Vicky, why would THEY need a new Secretary of Ed.? Arne’s already beholden to their side. Think you lose this one!
However, perhaps they are going over resumes and head shots to pick the new Michelle Rhee (national poster girl for the reform movement), since the original has so much baggage, and they’d spent so much time fawning over Rhee. This way, she could ride off quietly and slowly into the sunset, simply disappearing, thus saving them any future embarrassment while parading their new kid in town. Anyone have any ideas about that theory?

Find a way, with Oprah, to placate the black communities where schools are being closed. Make sure the public schools foreclosures proceed according to plan as it opens up a billion dollar charter industry and guarantees a reimbursements of tax money to private hands through the per pupil public education funding formula redirected into a steady revenue stream. It’s as risk-free as it could get for the entreneurial business. Competition is also very limited – there are few schools in each neighborhood. On the one hand, they have to convince the public that public education is a poor investment, and that there is no budget for it. On the other hand, public officials need to be convinced that privatizing education funding from taxes is a no brainer as a solid long term investment that pratically guarantees steady income for life!

Perhaps they will fund the recommended education program where “the articles, the speeches, the media programs, the advertising, the briefs filed in courts, and the appearances before legislative committees – all must meet the most exacting standards of accuracy and professional excellence … [and] merit respect for their level of public responsibility and scholarship…”

Bear with me here……I did some searching and discovered some possible clues to the mystery.
Regarding Dan Gilbert-
Interestingly…He is reported to be gobbling up huge amounts or real estate in Detroit through his real estate entity, Bedrock Real Estate Services.and seems enblazoned with the task of creating economic turnaround in Detroit. He apparently now owns 20 major buildings in downtown Detroit. In one article he blasts Bill O’Reilly for his disparaging remarks duriong his show about Detroit being a hopeless dead end.
http://www.freep.com/article/20130501/BUSINESS06/305010140/1002/business
Regarding Gates- He did start a group waelthy called ‘The Giving Pledge’ which is gathering up billionares as members. The organization urges Billionaire to promise to give away 50% their fortunes before they die so that the money can be used to adddress world problems. ( with the Gates Foundation being given $31 billion by Warren Buffet, over half the Buffett fortune)) Warren Buffet has actively enlisted 11 new members. The Giving Pledge now has 114 signatories…all billionaires.. A comment was made that this is of considerable concern for billionaires who spend at least 15 min to an hour a month discussiong how to divest their wealth when they die. (oh my, my) http://www.gatesfoundation.org/who-we-are/general-information/leadership/management-committee/warren-buffett
Regarding Warren Buffett..On May 10th 2013, he held his annual investors meeting and made a comment to ABC reporter regarding the frustrating gridlock in Wash DC, the improvement in the stockmarket as slow by encouraging, immigration reform needing to make promising immigrants citizens and education ‘hundreds of thousands’ to make a contribution in this country. He spoke that he is bullish on promoting women as an under utilized resource and the key to a prosperous future.. For centuries we have delegated women to a just a few professions and we need to change that. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/05/warren-buffett-tough-to-watch-washington-gridlock/
Then there are the reports from a variety of media sources (ABC to more fanatic groups) that through the years, the billionaires have been regularly meeting to discuss the problem of Population Control as one of the major problems facing the world, Bill Gates advancing the issue (of course) through regularly scheduled summit meetings of the world’s wealthiest. In these articles, most of the well known billionaires are mentioned as having attended the meeting in London, another in ,New York and elsewhere to discuss promoting contraception and controlling the growing world population. There are supposed quotes from Bill and Melinda Gateson the topic. I would not put it past Mr Gates to be engrossed in this as yet another one of his mad scientist ventures….but it seems rather certain that there have, indeed, been billionaire meetings (summits) on this topic. Apparently it interests quite a few of them.
“WND reported in May 2009 when Gates joined some of the richest men and women in the world meeting secretly in New York to talk about using their vast wealth to bring the world’s population growth under control.
In addition to Gates, the meeting included some of the biggest names in the “billionaires club,” according to the London Times, including David Rockefeller, Ted Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, George Soros and Michael Bloomberg.” According to Natural News, Gates told the conference that the goal is a lower population, and using vaccines to improve early childhood health is a step in that direction. “If you could register every birth on the cell phone, get fingerprints, get a location, then you could take the systems where you go around and make sure the immunizations happen,” he said. “Run them in a more effective way.” He continued,” “That sounds paradoxical,” he said. “The fact is that within a decade of improving health outcomes, parents decide to have [fewer] children.” In May, the Gates Foundation gave a grant of $100,000 to researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to develop a new type of ultrasound described as a “non-invasive, reversible form of birth control for men.” The ultrasound would make a man infertile for up to six months.

http://www.wnd.com/2012/08/bill-gates-world-needs-fewer-people/#TLF2uMAdsKrYgRR4.99
And on Jeb Bush’s participation…speculation abounds that the ‘secret meeting’ organized by Bill Gates, is to discuss Jeb’s run for the Presidency and muster the support of billionaire backers. As Warren Buffett stated in the link above…”Elections are not controlled by November elections anymore, they’re determined in the Primaries before November.” (Oh, well,,,silly me. I thought my vote mattered)
These are just some loose ends which may, or may not have connections to the most recent sighting of this flying flock of fabulous fortunes.
The most credible article of all is this one….The Philanthropic Challenge http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2010/06/16/gates-buffett-600-billion-dollar-philanthropy-challenge/

(Thanks to Professor Iannocone for introducing this book into the teacher education and leadership programs). One of my papers for his class described how state and local educational groups are competing for the same , very limited pot of money…. (this was before Romney put even more of a burden on locals.) My supervisor’s dissertation was on how the locals have to over-tax themselves to provide for schools and the inequities that result among communities in the state. There is one small NH district that has to assess local taxpayers every time a family moves into the district with one extra child. (this latter is anecdotal as I heard this from the aunt of the student in NH who lies in MA). Oprah and other celebrities would not be aware of any of this; they sign on for “glamour” and more celebrity.

Teachers earned a $1,500 stipend out of a $2.2 million Gates grant for volunteering.
And the Hillsborough Education Foundation used around $370,000 of that money to gather parent consent forms from each participating student. Much of that was spent to give families a $10 gift card to McDonalds or AMC movies — a small incentive to return the forms.

Buffett campaigns for tax fairness, for govt to “stopp coddling billionaires” as he puts it. Bloomberg coddles himself and other billionaires(about to hand over 13 more acres of a public park in NYC to an oil scion to build a pvt soccer stadium there instead of picnic/soccer grounds for working-class hispanic families in area, repeat of the handover of 2 parks in South Bronx 8 yrs ago). Buffett/Bloomberg are the bookends of the billionaire’s club with Gates the most skilled operator in political discourse(view the slick TED talk on how to get a great teacher in every classroom). Perhaps the level of conflict they aroused in public education concerns them b/c the local disruptions to kids, families, communities and school systems are out of control. Their rampage to privatize the assets of pub schls is leaving enormous disorder and discontent which even their labor captains like Weingarten, Van Roekel, etc., cannot manage for them. If so, congratulations to Diane and her blog! The rolling thunder is roiling the billionaires. Let’s keep going. Of course, according to the mantras we hear repeated ALL the time, “There are NO
conspiracies…ever!” Sounds at least naive, or worst a manipulation of the citizens to
ignore anything that the media moguls don’t want people to question OR pursue.
This little billionaire boys and girl meeting is a mirror image of the yearly retreats of
the Bilderberg international group meetings. The similarities are quite striking: both meet in luxurious hotels, both groups take over the whole premises, both have world leaders of industry, banking and presidents, etc., who attend these conclaves, and both
are truly paranoid about secrecy. Why, on all counts? Neither will release any press notices, but those who have been able to penetrate the Bilderburg conferences, walk away with alarming information regarding how these 1%’ers of the world intend to
play a real game of Monopoly with the globe. If the meetings were at least benign,
there would be no need to go to such lengths to have their intentions/plans be made
public. As JFK opined, secrecy is against the very nature of Democracy…he knew of what he spoke. As those of us in the full, frontal attack by corporate greed can attest to, this educational destruction did not just spontaneously happen. Maybe sh– does,
but every destroyed teacher, union and school district can verify, this assault is
anything but, “Dumb luck!” Until we can entertain a broader view of what is invading
our country in the diverse ways it is, ALL under the egis of corporations, bankers and their minions, we will fail to see the totality of what we are dealing with. As the “X Files”
opined, “The truth is out there.” One must do his/her homework concerning my
premise before discarding it and attributing the tenets as mere tin-hat blabbering s.
Of course, it is a given that the media, ever diminishing in news worthy content will never allude to any such groups. To stick our heads in the sands of senility, and
think our blissful, baseless thoughts that such malevolent powers could never exist here, it might be worthwhile reading Sinclair Lewis’s tome, “It can’t happen here” that he penned many decades ago when he realized the trouble we were so naively becoming a victim to. Simple, arbitrary rejection sans facts is the recipe for tyranny. Wouldn’t be the first time a nation fell to such truly “Bad players”…Marie Antoinette could
vouch for that reality of the world’s fragile vulnerability to Orwellian designs.

As you all know, our focus has always been on donating to education, so that we appear to be beneficent givers who are aiming to remedy the human condition. But, the poverty rate has increased and the public is catching onto us, so we are going to talk today about refocusing our efforts on the real population in need: those poor school children’s parents, the unemployed and the low-wage worker.

Buffet and Gates are Democrats and ardent supporters of Obama, who has served them very well. Why would they turn GOP and support Jeb when it’s precisely their “bipartisan” approach that has pushed the privatization agenda so far in the past for years? Oprah is a turn-coat who loves Chris Christie, so I can see her getting behind a GOP candidate, but I don’t think Buffet and Gates would do that –at least not publicly.
Jeb’s agenda is too blatant. Corporate education “reformers” would need a another candidate who can fool the public into believing they care about people more than corporations, as Obama did. Someone from Arkansas who has supported the Waltons would do, like Hillary. Were there any Waltons at this meeting?

Wise comments, although I would beg to differ about the intellectual abilities to divine Jeb’s motives, intentions. I think you far over rate such critical thinking prowess of the public! Au contraire. I do not at all attribute “such critical thinking prowess” to the public.
