December 14, 2012, will be engraved in our hearts and memories forever as a dark and terrible day in our national history.
It was a day when the unthinkable, the unimaginable, happened in Newtown, Connecticut.
It was a day when every parent’s worst nightmare became a reality.
It was a day when educators heroically defended their children, making the ultimate sacrifice.
It was a day we will never forget.
It was the worst day of 2012.

Yes, the whole worst, all at once, right at the end. Nothing else even goes on a list.

Let us also not forget the hundreds, yes hundreds of school-aged children killed and murdered in their communities and homes, and in cities like Chicago, some walking to and from school, lives ended by an array of violence.. Newtown should encourage us to cast a broader, wider light on all children, and renew our work to make every child safe. Let us open our hearts to those who are the unnamed silent young victims of brutal and cruelty indifference and preserve the the living hope of their love.

True that, also. It’s a long, unbearable list, which continues nonetheless, day after day.

Including students killed in Chicago who’ve had to travel to schools on rival gang turf because their neighborhood schools were shut down.
